🐶 Don’t miss this super fun event today & tomorrow @the_golden_mill celebrating the Goldens in Golden event!
🎉 Kick off party for Goldens in Golden 3pm-7pm
🥳After party tomorrow Feb 3rd 1-5pm!!
👏🏻 Thanks @breckandbailey for hosting!!
🔥 Hot take…Our dogs don’t need to meet, say hi and get along with every person or dog we come across.
🤔 I mean do we like every person we meet? It’s the same for our dogs.
🐶For our reactive dogs out there, it’s already hard enough not reacting, so why do we expect them to be perfect when we bring them close to triggers?
👍🏼 Let’s be happy with them just being neutral and just enjoying a nice walk with no added stressors. Walking right by with no reaction but no expectations for them to be happy or excited to see other people and dogs!
❓Is your dog happy to just walk on by sometimes? let us know in the comments!
✋ Trying to work on “stay” with your dog?! Here’s some tips to take you to the next level!
✅Always deliver the treats right to your dog instead of having them come to you for it! This will encourage them to stay in their spot longer!
✅Use a long leash to safely add more of the 3 D’s; distance, duration and distractions! If your dog can get really good around things outside and in different environments, their stay will be even more solid! As always, be careful with bust streets!
✅Use lower value treats! If your dog is so excited for the snacks and can’t stay, try a lower value treat. Sometimes this can help your dog be more focused on the training than on the food!
💙Thank you Ace, @andresdvega and @juanabangbang for being the perfect t examples of this!!
❓Will you try and if these!?!
🥳Had a wonderful conversation with @familypupz and @dogs.made.simple on The Family Pupz Podcast! We talked about all the changes she’s made and has seen in Diesel since starting our ‘Help! My Dog is Reactive On Leash!’ Course!
👀 We talk here about whether dogs are territorial or are they just fearful and/or frustrated?…Reactivity can look like a lot of different things but learning what our dog’s triggers are can help us understand what may actually be causing their reactivity.

🤔 Not sure where to start with your dog’s reactivity training? Try these 3 things!
✅Make a list of all your dog’s triggers and put it somewhere you can see it everyday! This will help guide us where to focus our training and remind us what we can try and avoid to help keep our dogs out of stressful situations!
✅Understand our dog’s body language. Observing and knowing when our dogs are feeling stressed, scared or overstimulated can help us predict and prevent a reaction from happening in the first place. The more dogs practice unwanted behaviors or reactions, the more you will see them happen.
✅Teach your dog some foundation behaviors to help you through these situations. Behaviors that help redirect, distract or add distance can keep dogs under threshold and less stressed and keep everyone in an emotional state perfect for learning and training.
👏🏻Start here and let us know how it goes!
☀️ 🌺 Spring is here! And we’re all excited for nicer weather, including our dogs!
🌸 Spring brings more sunshine, new smells and more people and dogs outside!
🥳With all the sun and excitement, you may see some of your dogs behaviors changing or regressing. Just like us, they’re excited to be outside enjoying the weather! They want to be in the sun, smelling all the new smells, pull towards other people or dogs and may not be used to all sounds outside from everyone being out more.
🤔 So what do we do? Maybe give your dog a little more outside time, let them smell all the good smells! Then go back to some of their foundation training! Sometimes going back to the basics is all they need as a quick reminder!
⁉️ Does your dog love Spring?!
✨Here’s a common question/concern we get on reactivity training-“What if the dog could care less about food/treats when on a walk. On walks my dog whines when he sees other dogs and u-turns, treats and/or food he could care less about”
👀 Here’s 3 things we recommend doing:
👉🏼Add distance from the trigger and/or distractions. This will allow your dog to disengage from the trigger and refocus back on you. Remember that Distance is your friend when training around distractions and triggers.
👉🏼Use novel and high value rewards and make sure we have those available when you’re training. When it comes to treats, we mostly use freeze dried meat and we make sure to keep a variety of those in our treat bags. If the dog is not into one type, you can always switch thing up! Most importantly, find what your dog loves the most and use that for the biggest challenges.
👉🏼Move your training session to a less distracting area. If your dog is having trouble training with you, it’s best to move to an environment that’s less stimulating (less people, less dogs, less noise). Your dog will have an easier time focusing on you there. You can slowly introduce and incorporate more distractions as you progress!

🥳Trainer Tip Tuesday!🦴 Today we’re talking about how to reward your dog in the moment! ⁉️Have you tried this before?!
🥇#1 question I get asked! Do I have to use treats forever?!
🤩Reinforcement drives behavior! Find what what your dogs likes best!
⁉️What’s your dog’s favorite reinforcer?!
🙋🏻♀️I get it! It can be awkward telling someone to go away when they approach you! But ask yourself this:
🤔Will it benefit you and your dog? Or will it set you back? If your dog is going to be more stressed, fearful or triggered after an interaction, it’s best to just give yourselves some space.
✨Never be afraid to advocate for you and your dog!! They can’t speak up for themselves so we have to do it for them.
⁉️What’s your go to when trying to avoid other people and dogs?
🥳Trainer Tip Tuesday with Gus! 🐶 Does your dog love to be on the kitchen with you right in the center of the action? Do they like to put their cute little paws on the counter to see what’s there for them to take a nibble? If so, try this!👉🏼Set their bed up near the kitchen and reinforce the heck out of them for staying there while you’re on the kitchen! ✨If you need help training this, send a message!
😞Do you ever have days that you’re just not feeling it? Well the same goes for our dogs! Sometimes they’re tired, not feeling well or anxious too! Always better to end the session, take a break and try again later instead of pushing through.
🧐Some things to look out for!
👉🏼Frequent lip licks
👉🏼Sniffing the ground
👉🏼Taking more frequent water breaks 👉🏼laying down
👉🏼defaulting to easier behaviors they know they’ll get treats for
👉🏼Not offering anything new
👉🏼You’re frustrated or stressed!
⁉️How does your dog tell you they’re ready for a break?! Let me know in the comments!
💙Keep it short and simple! 3-5 minutes is really all you need. I know it can be super exciting to see your dog learning and want to keep training! Trust me, I get it! But your pup needs breaks and time to rest their brain.
😓This can take the pressure off of you as well! Training shouldn’t take you hours a day!
🤓Pro tip! If you have trouble monitoring how long you’re actually training:
👉🏼Count out about 30 treats. When you’ve used them all, end the session!
👉🏼Set a timer for 3 minutes and end the session when the timer goes off!
🦮What dog doesn’t love getting outside to walk and play and sniff?!? Nothing wrong with getting excited for a walk!
🤔But I get it! Pulling you out the door the second you open it and taking you in every direction can be tiring and dangerous! So this is a great way to help that initial excitement! Play will help get some of the energy out and sniff will help them relax and feel a little more ready to enjoy the walk!
👇🏼Let me know how it goes in the comments!
👃 Let them sniff! It’s one of the most important things dogs can do! If you want a calmer, happier, more relaxed dog then sniffing can get them there!
✅There’s so many ways to get your wit sniffing!
-Long walks just for sniffing!
-Snuffle Mats!
-Treat scatters in the grass!
-Find it games !
⁉️ What’s your favorite way to get your dog sniffing!
😴 Is your dog getting enough sleep and rest?? They need more than you think! Sometimes we see tiredness come out in ways like nipping, barking, cookies and pacing! This is a sign that they need rest and some time to decompress.
💙And sometimes they need a little help! Anything that involves sniffing, licking or chewing can help your dog feel more relaxed which will help them rest more!
😌Providing a safe and quiet space for them to sleep and rest will help them feel more comfortable. This could be a cozy corner with a bed and blanket, a crate, a quiet room or a comfortable spot on the couch.
⁉️How much rest does your dog get during the day?
📦 Sometimes all it takes is a cardboard box to make our pups happy! Toys and bones are great but enrichment can be as easy (and inexpensive) as a box to shred and tear apart!
👏🏻Shredding is a great activity for dogs! It helps recuse stress, is a great outlet for their natural doggie behaviors and it’s so fun!
♻️ And, a great way to recycle!
🎅🏼 So this year just ask Santa for a box!
🛑 As always, be sure to supervise this activity to make sure our dogs are safe!
