HAPPY KITTY-VERSARY TO ME

10 years of trapping cats and kittens, getting them fixed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Also 3 months ago I hit the 2000 cats saved mark

TNR Hunterdon County NJ is NOT a 501c3 just me, Jessica Thomas, who made up a name, a FB page and from there it got out of control with requests and still is.

I worked for about a year at Animal Alliance as Office Manager and also worked for 4 years at Tabbys Place as a Staff member.

In 2016, just 2 years after I started helping cats, I did my biggest project and trapped 95 cats and kittens on one single property here in Hunterdon County. The main day I had a couple friends helping me and that was fun to have help.

The same year I also got certified as Animal Control Officer and Animal Cruelty Investigator and worked as ACO for Montgomery Twp from 2020 to 2021.

In 2016/2017 I also travelled twice as a volunteer for Animal Balance to Hawaii to trap cats 24/7. I was the lead trapper and my team and I trapped 685 in 5 days (they’re not on my list 🤪).

I’m smiling when I get help requests and it says “can someone from your group…” sorry that someone is just me, myself and I doing it all.

Beginning of 2018 I then was diagnosed with a tennis ball size brain tumor behind my right eye. It was benign and removed… so they thought. Came back August 2018 so another 11 hour surgery and 40 radiations and was done with all that in January of 2019. Still tumor cells left growing very slowly now. I slowly lost my eye sight in my right eye since then and I’m fully blind in that eye as of last year. BUT I can still rescue cats with just one eye 🤪

Dasani & Crush - adopted

These two babies were adopted just now by a family who has one cat waiting for play mates 😉

Happy life sweet babies and that leaves me with 3 out of 10 kittens from those litters.

Moxie & Spike - adopted

These are the 2 babies that were adopted on Tuesday by the family were I trapped their mommy.

They first wanted only these 2, then wanted the 2 siblings from the other mommy as well but changed their mind again to only these 2. They said they might come back for Mirinda & Powerade 🤷‍♀️

So out of 10 kittens I got 5 adopted out by Tuesday

KITTENS KITTENS KITTENS

EXCITING NEWS - all 10 kittens got retested today and are all negative for FeLV AND FIV.

When they were 8 weeks old their tests came back inconclusive due to antibodies from their mommy.

AND with all this commotion today with kittens and opossum rescue I got a message from the adopter of Moxie & Poppi.

Not only will they pick up their babies tomorrow but they also want to adopt the siblings Mirinda & Powerade.

For a better understanding. This family had 2 female cats that I trapped “Mittens” - mom of 8 kittens and “Mom Cat” - mom of Mirinda & Powerade. Mom Cat became an outside lap cat the day after I returned her and they’re trying to get her to come inside. She will be thrilled to have her babies back.

Kittens & wildlife rescue

What a nerve wrecking morning it was so far!

10 kittens had to go to the vet today for spay/neuter, shots and FeLV / FIV tests.

There was a lot to prepare last night and I always very anxious for the kittens.
Dora checked and made sure I got everything correct.

On the way to the vet at 9.45am with 8 crying kittens in the car (2 brought in by the adopter) I saw an injured opossum on Brunswick Pike in Lambertville.

I immediately stopped my car and waved down the cars. The home owner saw me and came right out and offered his carrier.
I put on some gloves and put that poor disoriented and bleeding opossum in the carrier. Home owner Sandy told me I’m a brave girl for doing that.

I had to leave the opossum and told him I’m back in 10 minutes. Just need to drop off the kittens at Animal Alliance.

On my way I called Mercer County Wildlife but no answer and voicemail says they’re closed. So I messaged Woodlands and within 2 min they answered they’ll take him and asked for my ETA.

I got the opossum, gave Sandy my business card and told him I’ll return his carrier later clean & sanitized. Thank you for your trust and immediate help.

By 10.45am I was at Woodlands and I do hope this baby will make it but if not at least it didn’t die on the hot pavement. By the blood markings on the road if must have been there for hours and nobody stopped or even tried to help.

On my way home I saw a raccoon on the road too. Stopped my car and move it’s dead body off the road too.

You all enjoy your Sunday and please don’t just drive by an injured animal. Call someone or even post it.

SANGRIA - adopted

Gary - who was just here yesterday and previously adopted from me just informed me that his family would like to adopt this sweet little girl.

She will go home in 2 weeks since she’s not getting fixed for another week anyway.

I hope she’s not also asking for Sandwich meat like Olivia who they adopted earlier this year 🤪

Poppi & Moxie - adopted

Brother & sister are officially adopted and going home together next week after their vet appointment to get the works done.

The family that came by today is the family where I trapped their mommy 😊

These two were actually my favorites from the start which is funny that they picked exactly these babies.

PEPPER & SPIKE - adopted together

This sister/brother couple was just adopted by a very sweet young lady and her 5 year old daughter. They will be living also with a doggie brother and 2 bearded dragons.

She was recommended to me by her landlord who very recently adopted Olivia from me earlier this year.

Kitten update - finally some good news

Bottle babies
(Flipper & Cosmo)

They’re still being bottle fed and after 2 weeks of providing baby food and wet food mixed with water 24/7 they finally ate food Friday night 🎉

They’re still getting spoiled with KMR too twice a day but it’s a start. And also both finally using litter box and no accidents for a couple days.

3 kittens
Fifi - B&W female
Bandit - B&W male
Domino - Tuxedo male

These babies were very underweight so I returned mommy. They barely ate and I thought they’re just picky eaters but then had liquid diarrhea so they just didn’t want to eat.
I did dewormed, Coccidia meds, FortiFlora, pumpkin purred, prescription GI food and especially the tuxedo lost weight daily.
I was able to get Metronidazole for the diarrhea and finally as of Friday little Domino gained weight!

All three bowls of wet food they get twice daily are empty and no more loose stool as of yesterday.

I tried all morning to add them to Petfinder but seems like they’re having a problem. I’ll keep trying 🤷‍♀️

All 10 doing great and are very sweet, loving and playful

Question:

The 3 kittens that are not thriving dislike chicken and turkey but like beef so I know which wet food they like and eat.

Dry food I tried Mom & Baby Cat, Neutro chicken & rice and Science Diet kitten.
They don’t like chicken so they don’t touch it.

I can’t find any dry food without chicken.

Anyone knows a dry food just with beef? I’ll try salmon until I find one

KITTEN UPDATE

An update so everyone sees it’s not just all cute having kittens!

Flemington - Bottle babies
The two boys doing great - now 4 weeks old. They’re eating good, good stool and big fat bellies.
BUT both not willing to give up the bottle and both not using litter box 🤦🏽‍♀️
I provide litter box and 2 bowls of food (one with baby food) 24/7 and nothing
I even leave them home and have the playpen facing my cats food bowls so they see them eat. Lots of cleaning & feeding but at least 2 happy healthy boys 👍

Pittstown - 3 kittens
These 3 babies are not doing great
After I trapped mommy and her 6 babies I had 3 babies die in May. 2 weeks ago I then got mom fixed and returned her seeing that she’s laying on her crying babies.

Baby 1 (female): doing good and gaining weight
Baby 2 (male): was the biggest one and I see him eating but he keeps losing weight
Baby 3 (male): that the boy that was only 0.9 lbs with 5 weeks of age and he was eating too and for 5 days no weight gain.

All got Coccidia meds and dewormer and the little boy fluids. I even gave both boys appetite stimulant. No fever, all 3 playful and eating (too little). The boys are finally gaining weight since a couple days ago but are still too skinny and very small so keep those paws crossed for them

All of them are eating good, good stool, super playful and purring. I’ll post them all on Petfinder this weekend 😉

Pittstown - 10 kittens Update

On April 4th I trapped a mom who had 8 kittens and the mother of that cat who was pregnant and gave birth to 2 kittens the next day.

Both moms did a great job with all their babies and mommy’s left about 3 weeks ago.

The 8 siblings are 10 tomorrow and the other 2 are 9 weeks tomorrow. They’re all in one room and having a blast.

All are very very friendly and purring, eating good, using litter box and 8 got already first distemper shot and microchip BUT most of them tested positive for FIV.

They’re still babies so those results cat still be false positives 😉 they will get retested in a couple weeks when they get spayed/neutered and get their second distemper shot.

They also got their first cat tree and I took 2 of the 3 big cages out of the room.

Pittstown - mommy and 3 babies

The babies are now 5 weeks old and don’t seem to grow. Mommy is very feral and tried to attack me a couple times.

I saw her twice rolling around playing cute but there was the smallest kitten under her crying and she didn’t seem to care.

Therefore I made the decision to get her out, fixed and returned before the babies are weened for their own safety.

She was spayed etc on Tuesday and returned to the property on Wednesday.

When I then finally was able to get my hands on the kittens and weigh them I was shocked that 2 kittens are just 1 lbs and the smallest one only 0.9 lbs. and feels skinny.

The rule is 1 lbs per month so they should all be 1.3 lbs being 5 weeks old!
So it was the right decision and they’re getting used to lots of baby food and mom & baby cat food. I also started Coccidia meds today since I found throw up this morning.

So fingers crossed for those babies and donations of baby food (especially HAM) is always welcome 😉

Flemington - Bottle babies update

Three weeks ago my coworker asked me for help with crying and icecold babies she found that were born that day.

All 5 were eating and gaining weight but 3 days in one was declining and died that night. A second one a couple days later and a third one the next day. May was a heartbreaking month for me loosing these three as well as three from that mommy of 6.

But the last two are doing amazing and are already 1 lbs at just 3 weeks of age with perfect stool after mixing GI kitten food in the milk.

I have a feeling they will be eating on their own by next week.
Next update when they do more than eat, p**p and sleep 🤪
