****** ADOPTER UPDATE ******

Miss Harlow & Mr. Colby

I’ve seen your recent posts on Facebook and want to say thank you for everything you do for the animals. You and your organization are wonderful. I thought I’s sen you some pics of the purr babies to hopefully brighten yhe start of your day. They are both so happy and we can’t imagine life without them now. I never realised how hard it would be to get good pictures of a black cat. I hope things improve for you and the industry, the world is a brighter place with you all here doing what you do.

Summer in Australia is no joke and we are yet again heading back into a drought.

Water, it is something Australia doesn’t have enough of, and yet every living creature including humans, need it to survive.

Canberra is expecting 33 degrees tomorrow and 34 degrees on Sunday.

So please consider doing something for our wildlife and those who live on the streets, who can’t go to the fridge for a cold drink, jump in a pool or turn a fan on to cool down.

This photo is what you can do – a container of water.

This here will save lives – just a small show of respect for wildlife and street pets who are doing it far tougher than we are.

Be a hero, show some compassion and offer some water.

Happy New Year Everyone

We hope you have all entered 2025 happy, healthy and ready to make a difference, as I know we at Beaks & Whiskers have.

The biggest thing to happen at this time of year is New Year’s resolutions. So many of those resolutions are to get healthy, lose weight etc. This results in people getting outside and exercising and for those who have dogs, this means they get to join in.

But, before you go outside and start your walk or run you need to do yourself a favour and more importantly, your four-legged friend a favour and check if it is safe for your dog to walk.

Heat stroke is very real for animals, so exercising in the heat, is not practical or smart which goes without saying.

There is, however, something else you need to do. Sadly, we see far too many people not doing this, because if they did, they wouldn’t be walking their dogs, let alone walking their dogs where they do. It could simply be people don’t know, or they just choose not to, but you need to check the ground. Most people don’t realize the damage the heat in the ground can do to your dogs (and street animals) feet. Worst case scenario it can actually burn the skin off your pets’ paws.

Put the back of your hand on the ground and if you can comfortably keep it there for 5 seconds, then you dog can walk on that area. Tar roads are the biggest problem, so that is the best surface to check.

Choosing to walk your dog in the morning and on cooler grounds like grass is always your safest option.

Hopes for 2025………………………….

I hope the world becomes a better and nicer place for animals (and humans) and for those who are dedicated to helping them.

I hope those who are adding to the pet epidemic wake up to themselves and realize they can’t keep going down this path while so many animals are suffering, including those who they are bringing into this world.

I hope those who are fighting the good fight keep going, but if it gets too much, stop. Your life isn’t worth it, step back, take a break or help in another way. We may not all know each other but we are all fighting this together, so if you need to step away for a while there are plenty of us who will do our best to help your community. You can always come back later, as sadly there will never be a shortage of animals who need saving.

I hope those who choose to buy their pets, choose differently next year. No, not every rescue is going to have the pet you are after or be able to match you with that pet but there are so many rescues you will find your match.

Just keep in mind the whole getting whatever animal you wanted because you have the money and entitlement is part of the reason we are in this pet epidemic. Maybe if questions are asked and restrictions are made and animals are fully vetted before leaving for forever homes, we wouldn’t have so many unwanted, abused and neglected animals.

On a funny note, to all those I offended this year because I wouldn’t accept your rudeness or entitlement or more importantly wouldn’t match you with a resident because we put our resident welfare, health, needs and happiness first and foremost, do better so I don’t have to do it again next year.

I’m hoping in 2025 that I can achieve or at least start to achieve what I have lined up. If I do it is going to be an interesting year, and I will no doubt offend many but inspire plenty more.

Let’s recap 2024……………………………..

Did 2024 go how we thought it might, absolutely.

The pet epidemic has well and truly arrived, and this year was the first full year of it and sadly won’t be the last.

Unfortunately, our adoption rate was way down. However, we still had some adoptions, including three long-term feline pairs –

Miss Betty Boop & Mr. Figaro (in care for 601 days)

Miss Izarra (in care for 625 days) & Lord Hampshire (in care for 324 days)

Miss Toya (in care for 404 days) & Mr. Nacho (in care for 728 days)

I know many people and places talk the talk, but I can honestly say we also walk the walk. Showing that when we say that our residents have as along as it takes to find the right home for them, the stats above show it.

We are grateful to everyone who adopts and even more so to those who chose our rescue to adopt from and our residents to give lifelong loving homes to.

Pairs are hard to find homes for along with residents who have been looking for home for a while and that was the case even before the pet epidemic. So, we truly appreciate those who open their hearts and homes to pairs, quieter residents, older residents, those who are differently abled, those who are considered by most as plain and those who are simply here for a longer period of time through no fault of their own.

In 2024, we were also forced to close our doors to owner surrenders. Sadly, this was due to rudeness, entitlement and time wasting from the public. This did make me extremely disappointed in humans who are supposed to be adults, given that in the end of the day only the animals suffer. However, you have to pick your battles and 2024 being the first full year of the pet epidemic seemed to be a battle itself.

However, to end on a positive note, I have been working quietly behind the scenes making some changes. This will hopefully allow me to be able to play a different role and offer some different things in 2025, as what is Beaks & Whiskers Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, if not adaptable.

I was just scrolling through our page and reflecting on the year and saw our video of me saving a shingle back lizard off the road has had 2.1 million views.

I am lost for words and completely dumbfounded to say the least, as 2.9k is the most views we have ever had on our videos.

In truth, I’m still shocked to think anyone is following us or tuning into what we are sharing.

The fact that this video has had so many views is amazing and I truly hope that it has inspired at least one person to stop and save our wildlife from being killed on our roads.

Thank you to everyone who has watched our videos, like & shared our posts and liked/followed our page.

Also, a big thank you for the support of this video and I look forward to sharing more with you in 2025.

From our family to yours Merry Christmas everyone.

We are going to take the next few days off of social media to spend time with our feathered, furred, scaly, hairy and skinned family.

It means the world to us when people take the time to send us updates and photos of our babies - goodbyes are always the hardest part but getting to see our former residents grow up in loving homes makes it all worth it.
So, if you have one of our babies and would like to share a photo or update please send them through.

Well, another thing to come to a close for 2024, which is adoptions.

As we said recently and every year prior, we do not believe that any animal should be a Christmas gift or brought into the home during the chaos of Christmas.

With yesterday being the last day to submit questionnaires our “Adopt Us” album has now been deleted.

This year was the first full year of the pet epidemic and sadly there was a lack of adoptions but not a lack of animals needing help.

The reality is, next year is only going to be worse and the year after that will be worse again.

Is there an end for the epidemic, I honestly don’t think it will happen anytime soon, especially if people continue to breed and others continue to choose to purchase their pets from these people.

Do I think we have a chance to make things better, 100% yes, but it’s going to take work, effort and a different attitude from everyone.

Thank you to everyone who chose to adopt, and more importantly, chose our rescue to adopt from and our residents to give a lifelong loving home to.

12/12/2024

As we explained last month, in our adopt us album, in every ad outside of social media and every year prior, we do not believe in animals being gifts for Christmas or joining a family during the chaos of Christmas.

So, this is your last chance to adoption from us in 2024.

There is three days left to obtain and submit your questionnaire and five days left for meet n greets/adoptions.

Please don’t waste our time, we have already been asked to hold residents until Christmas so they can be presents from Santa as well as holding residents until next year, so families can go on holidays and not miss out.

So, I will explain this again - we do not adopt our residents out for Christmas gifts. Our last day accepting questionnaires is December 15th and our last day for adoptions is December 17th.

No one is above our policy, as our policy put our resident’s welfare, happiness, health and needs first, which is what we have always done.

We are also in no rush to have residents adopted; they will find their forever homes when they are meant to. Despite that meaning that they will be staying here with us to try their luck in finding a family & home of their own next year and this is a decision we are happy to make.

Please remember that pets are for life, not just for the holidays and if you are going away this holiday season, please wait until you are back and settled before taking on a new family member.

We now have everyone who is adoptable in our “Adopt Us” album and would greatly appreciate our community sharing this album for us.

~~~~ ACCEPTING EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST ~~~~
Last but not least, our nineth longest resident is this stud muffin.
Mr. Jabari joined Beaks & Whiskers in October 2024, from Sylvania, NSW – equaling 41 days in care.
A family was visiting family in Sylvania and found Mr. Jabari who had been dumped in a Hungry Jack’s carpark.
When Mr. Jabari first arrived, he was skin and bones, anemic and very lethargic. The family who found him said he had been like that since they found him, he had also shown signs of not being able to walk properly – they didn’t have him seen to by a vet, so didn’t know anymore.
Of course, we had him seen to by our vet straight away. He was confirmed to be emaciated, anemic, had sore kidneys and was on deaths door” to the point if the family had put it off handing him over to us any longer, he would have died within 24-48 hours.
The thought was he had eaten a poisoned rodent and that was making him anemic, causing his lethargy and problems with his kidneys. So, we started treating that first, along with pumping food into him to start getting some weight back on him.
I’m pleased to say that Mr. Jabari has overcome the alleged poisoned rodent poisoning; his kidneys are back to full and normal function, and he has doubled his weight.
PERSONAL DETAILS: Mr. Jabari – 1 year old – DSH – Blue Tabby & White Tuxedo.
PERSONALITY: This gentleman is a heart throb. He is very laidback, super human orientated and affectionate and loves a pat and cuddle. He is more than happy to be picked up, carried, kissed, cuddled, patted etc.
VET WORK: He is vet checked, vaccinated, micro-chipped, wormed, flea treated, nails clipped and most importantly de-sexed.
ADOPTION FEE: Mr. Jabari’s adoption fee is $350.00 – his adoption fee is not negotiable.
MEDICAL NEEDS: None
OTHER: He is toilet trained and travels beautifully in the car.
NON-NEGOTIABLES: Mr. Jabari will require a feline companion – he can be adopted with a fellow Beaks & Whiskers friend or into a home with an existing feline.
