~~~~ ACCEPTING EXPRESSIONS FOR PRE-ADOPTION INTEREST ~~~~
These two gorgeous boys are booked in to complete their vet work in a little over one week and once their vet work is completed, they will be ready to join their new family. So, we would love to give the opportunity to potential adopters to express their interest early and have some extra time to get ready for their arrival.
Mr. Tarlo & Mr. Zakai joined Beaks & Whiskers this month from a vet in Canberra, ACT.
All we know about these two is they were born on the streets and handed in to the vet. Their finders have tried catching mum and we have asked the vet to pass on to them that we will take her as well to get her off the street and stop the cycle.
PERSONAL DETAILS: Mr. Tarlo – 8 weeks old – DSH – Black and Mr. Zakai – 8 weeks old – DSH – Dark Silver Tabby.
PERSONALITY: These two are still quite young, but so far, Mr. Tarlo is showing us a more active and confident side, while Mr. Zakai is showing is a more placid and quiet side. They are however, both sweethearts, cuddly, playful and human orientated. They are both more than happy to be picked up, carried, kissed, cuddled, patted etc.
VET WORK: They will both be vet checked, vaccinated, micro-chipped, wormed, flea treated, nails clipped and most importantly de-s*xed.
ADOPTION FEE: Mr. Tarlo & Mr. Zakai’s adoption fee is $350.00 each – their adoption fees are not negotiable.
MEDICAL NEEDS: None
OTHER: They are both toilet trained and travel beautifully in the car.
NON-NEGOTIABLES: Mr. Tarlo & Mr. Zakai will require a feline companion – they can be adopted together, with a fellow Beaks & Whiskers friend or into a home with an existing feline. Obviously, any family looking to adopt them together will have priority.
Meet this sweet little family – Beaks & Whiskers Rescues #1018 - #1023
As a couple of the babies are still a bit young to s*x, we have not officially named them all at this time, so will not be sharing their names at this stage.
This sweet little family joined Beaks & Whiskers last month from Canberra, ACT.
These babies were in an aviary which had rodents in it. Sadly, these rodents killed a number of parents and babies, leaving these little ones without parents or a safe home.
As these little munchkins were not weaned, we were contacted to help, of course we were happy to.
What can society learn from this situation –
1. When building an aviary for your birds, make sure that the floor of the aviary is concrete, and the lower part of your aviary is metal. This will reduce the, if not eliminate the risk of rodents and snakes entering your aviary.
Meet Mr. Tarlo & Mr. Zakai – Beaks & Whiskers Rescues #1016 & #1017
These brothers joined Beaks & Whiskers earlier this month from a vet in Canberra, ACT.
I chose the name Mr. Tarlo for our little black kitten, as it is native for cub of the bear.
I chose the name Mr. Zakai – pronounced Zah-Kye - for our little dark silver tabby, as Zakai is a mythical Hebrew name meaning Pure.
All we know about these two is they were born on the streets and handed in to the vet. Their finders have tried catching mum and we have asked the vet to pass on to them that we will take her as well to get her off the street and stop the cycle.
What can society learn from this situation –
1. Des*x your pets, as cats are not a native species all the cats on our streets are a product from people allowing their un-des*xed cats to roam.
2. Sadly, it is said that 75% of cats born on the street will die or disappear before six months of age. So, I’m glad these two were able to be taken out of that situation. However, mum is still out there and will sadly be back having another little in no time.
3. If you really want to make a difference and help stop the cycle, catch mum as well at a minimum. A single un-des*xed Mumma cat can have over 100 kittens in her lifetime and naturally, if half of those kittens are females you are then looking at upwards of 400 kittens in seven years. Then when you add the fact that Mumma cats can fall pregnant three weeks are giving birth, this shows why the situation is out of control.
4. I feel that the world is becoming more dangerous for animals, especially for those who are on the streets – whether they are owned or not. There are more and more posts about animals, especially street cats who have been shot, bashed, ran over etc even while being part of a “safe” colony. This doesn’t include cats fighting with each other, interbreeding and of cause sickness and disease that can run ramped through these colonies. Every cat off the streets is a cat saved.
Today, we remember the brave men and women who laid down their lives so we can be free. We also remember their faithful animals, who, without knowing, went to war and also made the ultimate sacrifice.
~~~~ ACCPETING EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST ~~~~

Miss Lulu joined Beaks & Whiskers last month from a vet in Canberra, ACT.

Miss Lulu was originally surrendered to a vet clinic with her four babies. As it tends to happen, all of her kittens were adopted, and she was left by herself looking for home.

A family who adopted one of Miss Lulu’s kittens (Mr. Louie), reached out as they could no longer keep him and during his surrender mentioned that Mr. Louie’s Mumma, Miss Lulu, was still at the vets looking for a home. As Mr. Louie’s family didn’t have any of his paperwork, we contact the vet and mentioned that we would be happy to offer Miss Lulu a place here and they took us up on out offer.

We were told that she had a number of meet n greets and was adopted once but was returned as she hadn’t settled in within three days. I know ridiculous, but it was obviously the people who adopted her and the environment she went to, as she was all over us, affectionate and exploring/following me around not even 24 hours after coming into care.

PERSONAL DETAILS: Miss Louie – 1 year old – DSH – Ginger & White, Van mutation.

PERSONALITY: Miss Lulu is human orientated, affectionate and confident. She is more than happy to be picked up, carried, kissed, cuddled, patted etc.

VET WORK: She has been vet checked, vaccinated, micro-chipped, wormed, flea treated, nails clipped and most importantly de-s*xed.

ADOPTION FEE: Miss Lulu’s adoption fee is $400.00 – her adoption fee is not negotiable.

MEDICAL NEEDS: None

OTHER: She is also toilet trained and travels beautifully in the car.

NON-NEGOTIABLES: Miss Lulu will require a home as an only child – meaning a home with no other pets.

Our intentions were to adopt Miss Lulu out with her son Mr. Louie, but Miss Lulu thought that was a horrible idea, so we have move forward accordingly.

~~~~ ACCEPTING EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST ~~~~
Mr. Louie joined Beaks & Whiskers last month from Kaleen, ACT.
This handsome little guys along with his Mumma and three siblings were surrendered to a vet clinic.
He was adopted from the vet and after having him for sixish weeks his family reached out as they could no longer keep him as they believed he had territorial and aggression issues. They had seeked advice from the vet they adopted him from but when things didn’t change, they contacted us. Yes, we are closed to owner surrenders, but as this little kitten was on the wait list for the RSPCA who would have only killed him due to allegedly being territorial/aggressive, I couldn’t say no. So, of course we offered to help.
Bless this little boy, he was a little overwhelmed when he first arrived but very quickly showed his extremely affectionate, cheeky and playful personality. He has shown no signs of territorial/aggressive behaviour.
PERSONAL DETAILS: Mr. Louie – 12 weeks old – DSH – Ginger & White.
PERSONALITY: Mr. Louie is very human orientated, super affectionate, confident and extremely active/playful. He is more than happy to be picked up, carried, kissed, cuddled, patted etc.
VET WORK: He has been vet checked, vaccinated, micro-chipped, wormed, flea treated, nails clipped and most importantly de-s*xed.
ADOPTION FEE: Mr. Louie’s adoption fee is $350.00 – his adoption fee is not negotiable.
MEDICAL NEEDS: None
OTHER: He is also toilet trained and travels beautifully in the car.
NON-NEGOTIABLES: Mr. Louie will require a feline companion – we would prefer and will give priority to a family open to adopting Mr. Louie with a fellow Beaks & Whiskers friend, as he is happy and comfortable with them. We will, however, be open to a family with an existing feline.
Our hearts are broken to hear about the passing of Police Dog Xtra & Development Dog Soldier due to technical issues.
Our thoughts are with their handler, family and Police family.
As the weather has warmed up and will obviously only be getting hotter, this is a timely reminder to not leave your pets in your car. Even if you are parked underground, in the shade and/or leave the windows cracked, these things do not help with keeping your pets cool during these hotter months.
Heatstroke is a killer in pets left in cars and although it effects all animals (and humans), dogs and cats with flat faces, thick and/or long coats and those suffering from pre-existing heart/breathing conditions or neurological issues are more prone to succumbing to heatstroke.
Please, let's all enjoy these warmer months by keeping our pets safe and alive, after all they don’t have a voice or a choice about our actions.
Rest In Peace PD Xtra & DD Soldier and thank you for your service.
Mr. Louie joined Beaks & Whiskers this month from Kaleen ACT.
Mr. Louie was adopted from the vet, and during the sixish weeks his new family had him, they believed he had territorial and aggression issues.
They did reach back out to the vet they adopted him from, but decided their way forward wasn’t working and that it was best for Mr. Louie to find a new home.
After putting Mr. Louie on the wait list for the RSPCA, they thankfully contacted us.
27/10/2024
We all know that every year in Australian pounds and shelters (RSPCA) over 250,000 animals are killed, and obviously, this number has only increased over the last couple of years, due to the pet epidemic.
So, when news hit a few days ago that 21 dogs lost their lives and 20 of them in such an unnecessary way my heart broke.
Sadly, pounds and shelters are needed, as there is a demand for them due to the Australian community feeling entitled to not only continue unnecessary and unethical breeding of all species and breeds of animals, while in a pet epidemic. Plenty of other people have commitment issues and seem to feel the need to surrender, sell or giveaway that pet they just had to have at what they deem to be the first slight inconvenience.
Somehow, the pets of Australia (and the world) have become even more disposable and to make things more interesting, the wants, needs and requirements of so many potential adopters have become an equal mix of ridiculous and unachievable for a human to achieve, let alone an animal. Especially when what is offered to that animal is lacking.
The saddest part of these 21 dogs losing their lives, is there last days on earth were spent in a concrete cage, surrounded by the typical stress that comes from a pound environment and having no family of their own, as their “family” no longer wanted them, and no doubt told themselves that they would be better off going to the pound.
To add insult to injury the other 20 dogs didn’t need to be killed according to a quote from Rebecca Ryan the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council General Manager.
"So it was a matter of time of either waiting for each dog to show a symptom, or we had to make a decision to think about the quality of life of those dogs and what their future prognosis for survival.''
Again, this isn’t a stab at the pound. This also isn’t a stab at anyone who chooses to put their pets in pounds and shelters, as this is their choice, and, in the end of the day, they have to live with this decision. This is also not a stab at the owner who allegedly surrendered a dog with parvo and didn’t say anything.
Lord knows, we ourselves, are lied to (not to mention the rude and abusive behaviour) by majority, if not every owner who surrenders their pet and even those who simply reach out to surrender. This played a big part of us being forced to stop taking in owner surrenders.
I would like to point out, however, that parvo symptoms include lethargy, vomiting and severe diarrhoea. So, if the dog in question was surrendered with pavo, yes, the owner should have said something, but it would be that obvious that even blind Freddy would have seen that something wasn’t right.
Sadly, fingers are forever being pointed in every other direction, but the facts are simple, humans were at fault and yet again animals paid the price.
Rest In Peace sweet babies, I’m sorry humans failed you on more than one occasion.
