Honey is very helpful in the early stages of wound repair but less helpful in later stages. In the early inflammatory stage, honey seems to have the most positive effect in helping to remove necrotic tissue.

Many products are sticky and attract bugs. Not the case with our Honey and Resin products. Vezer Care

The antimicrobial properties of honey is highly desirable as this supports the movement of antimicrobial stewardship. Antimicrobial resistance is a growing concern in both human and Veterinary medicine. The use of honey on wounds may avoid the requirement of antibiotics by providing a more natural alternative, although sometimes the use of antibiotics is essential in heavily infected and contaminated wounds.

Heard of Mud Fever??

Scratches is the common name for areas of lumpy, weepy or crusty skin on the lower legs, especially around the heel and pastern and sometimes up the cannon. Dr. Stephen White, Professor of Dermatology, School of Veterinary Medicine, at the University of California-Davis says this condition is also called greasy heel or mud fever, referring to any kind of skin lesion on the pastern and fetlock areas. “There can be many reasons and causes; cases that keep recurring are often due to vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels under the skin),” he said.

“The lesions are most common in unpigmented (pink) skin but can also occur in colored skin. The cause is not always understood. On rare occasion it may be due to a drug that was given to the horse, causing the reaction, or due to photosensitization, which is seen most frequently in unpigmented skin.”

The cause is not always known, but the problem occurs most frequently in wet conditions. There is likely some trauma to the skin—maybe a nick or abrasion. In winter the skin might be broken by ice or crusted snow. Most infections are a mixed bag of bacteria and fungi that are present in the mud and f***l material that the horses are walking and standing in. The disease starts as a wet rash on the leg/pastern/heel area and then it becomes a crusted scab.

The most appropriate treatment will depend on the cause, and if your veterinarian thinks the infection might be a mix of bacteria and fungi, there are some medications that can be applied to the affected areas to help combat the infection. Keeping the feet and legs clean and dry can also help. Once again Honey & Resin to the rescue!! Vezer Care Vezer Oy

What is a hot spot?
This colloquial term is used to refer to localized skin infections affecting the most superficial layers of the skin. These are most commonly caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, which is found on the skin of healthy dogs but overgrows and causes disease when given the opportunity. Despite their superficial nature, these bacteria can still cause severe problems. Once they’ve successfully established an infection, they spread and worsen rapidly, often visibly progressing in less than 24 hours.

What causes hot spots?
Hot spots are most common in thick-coated dogs, including Labradors. Anything that disrupts the skin barrier can allow the bacteria on the skin to overgrow and cause an infection. Common causes include allergies, mites, fleas, poor grooming, and excessive skin humidity; all of these factors can compromise the skin barrier and result in self-trauma due to itching, allowing bacterial infection to take hold. It can sometimes be difficult to identify the underlying cause of a hot spot, but most of them resolve regardless with appropriate treatment. However, if your Lab has recurrent hot spots or other symptoms, it’s worth investigating further.

Any of our Honey and Spruce Resin products not only attack the bacteria but also help reduce inflammation, itch and help regenerate new healthy tissue without crazy chemicals. Vezer Care Vezer Oy

Our Ointment or Treatment Cream made with Honey/ Resin/ Pitch Oil will is a non0-chemical way to treat Infections:
OUR PRODUCTS are Antimicrobial, Antibacterial, Anti-fungal and will help to quickly regenerate healthy tissue.

Breaks in the skin lead to bacterial and/or fungal infections causing scaly patches, hair loss, and inflammation on the legs called scratches (aka grease heel or mud fever). Causes include contact allergies and irritants, infestation with Chorioptes mites (leg mange), and malformations with the lymphatic vessels, etc. Secondary infections are often worsened by exposure to moisture in mud or pastures. Draft breeds and other horses with feathered legs might be most susceptible.

Rain rot is skin disease caused by the opportunistic bacterium which thrives in moist conditions. Rain rot is usually evident over the horse’s neck, back, and croup, but can also spread to the legs. The skin crusts and raised tufts of serum-matted hair, called paintbrush lesions, form. The tufts usually shed, leaving hairless patches. Rain rot is contagious.

Ringworm is caused by a highly contagious fungal infection, not a worm, and is named for the shape of the skin lesions, which take on a ring-like appearance. Each ringworm forms a circle with a raised edge that encircles a hairless and often scabby patch.

Warts are caused by the equine papilloma virus and are often associated with young horses. The lesions usually form on the muzzle and lips; warts are contagious and spread via direct contact with horses suffering active breakouts.
