A little thought for the day 😊

How often can we get frustrated when our training, or just life, doesn’t go as well as we want?
How rewarding is it when we persevere and see real progress?

Questions….. 🤔
Have you done your research….?
Do you understand the behaviour traits of your dog?
How are you going to deal with the behaviours your dog displays, if unwanted?

Training with DeWolf can help

Please remember, It’s never too late to learn how to live in harmony with your dogs 😍

Copied from David Attenborough & Large Breed Dog Rescue

“Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone”

How DeWolf helped change my life

So my life has been very different to the one I was expected to lead.

I was bred by Guide Dogs for the Blind to be a life changer for someone with a visual impairment. My now Hoomans & some friends did a lot of fund raising to be able to name & sponsor a Guide Dog pup & one of the things they did was the Thames Bridges Trek, crossing Putney Bridge first! As part of the GD scheme I came to my Hoomans when I was 8 weeks old & met my big sister & mentor.

Although I was bred to be a Guide Dog with very specific commands my Hoomans were able to take me to DeWolf training classes so I could learn to do what was expected of me around dogs of all breeds, shapes & sizes. I was ‘treat’ trained as per Guide Dogs instructions, but I did just as well with my commands with love & praise as my treats! I was taken to shops, cafes, restaurants, the cinema, the theatre & on buses & trains where I learned how to behave. I was also taken to the fire station & police station where I learned that the sirens, lights & people in strange outfits with breathing apparatus were kind & there to help me & my Hooman if needed. I loved going to all these places.

At 17 months of age, I left my family & went to live with a different family near the training school where I went every day to learn more advanced skills with my trainer.

Then we had a strange thing called ‘Lockdown’ & training had to stop. When training re-started I really didn’t want to do it & kept getting things wrong, so I was ‘withdrawn’ & I came back to live with my sister & my forever Hoomans. I hadn’t forgotten them & they were so happy to have me back.

It wasn’t long before Mum took me back to Wendi’s classes where I have learned to respond to hand signals as well as voice commands, how to walk to heel & lots of other things which are slightly different to Guide Dog training. I’ve also learned that I don’t need food treats but love it when I get things right & Mum gives me lots of praise. Mum says I’m more focused on her commands now we don’t use treats.

I love being with my forever family & seeing my friends at DeWolf once a week. I may not have succeeded in being a Guide Dog but I’ve found my niche with my Hoomans & my beautiful sister.

GOOD MORNING I hope you're having a good day, I am.
Let me tell you how life has been for me and how DeWOLF has helped me blossom

I came to my forever home when I was 8 weeks old. I was sad to leave my Mum but some of my siblings had already gone to new homes.
The day after I arrived there was a lot of cold, white stuff covering my new garden, I had great fun & my Hoomans made sure I didn’t stay out too long & soon got me warm & dry.

With lots of love & kindness from my hoomans I soon settled into my new home. Before long they were taking me outside the confines of the garden into what they called ‘the big wide world’ I learned that lots of sights & sounds were not necessarily scary.

It wasn’t long before I met Wendi at DeWolf training, my Hoomans said they wanted to be taught how to train me to do lots of ‘obedience’ things, most important of which was to come back when they called. I loved doing that even though there were lots of distractions as I always got lots of praise & love.

When I was about 15 months old my Hoomans decided to add to our family by becoming Puppy Walkers for Guide Dogs for the blind. Over the years they had 4 puppies, who each stayed between 12 & 18 months & as well as playing with each one I used to go to Wendi’s classes with them & helped them understand what was expected of them. I’m told I was a good mentor! They also used to do short-term boarding for Guide Dogs so I made lots of new friends. Most of them were respectful especially as I got a bit older but some pestered me a bit too much so I had to tell them off. Guide Dogs introduced ’treat training’ with the last couple of pups, which the pups thought was lovely & teased me because I did what was expected for the sheer joy of pleasing my Hoomans!

I’m 12 years old now & still love my walks though I perhaps don’t run quite as fast as I used to unless there’s a muddy puddle to run through. I love my snuggles with my Hoomans and sometimes just like my own space. About 5 years ago they took on another Guide Dog pup who sadly didn’t make the grade so has come back to live with us. He’s a gentle boy & I love him as my ‘little brother’ even though he’s much bigger than me but I’ll let him tell his story.

Here I am 😍

The BENEFITS of DeWolf for me

Hello humans I want to tell you my story….. as much as I can, about how DeWolf has helped me.

My family don’t know much of my history. They collected me from a place called a “rescue centre” and took me to their home. This was at a time when a thing called “covid” and “lockdown” was happening. The humans at the centre think that I was about 6 years old and had been passed around a bit, but they cannot be sure.

I had huge, wide and worried eyes and I just did not know what to expect. I was frightened of most things…. Noises, traffic, my feet being touched (especially my front paws) and I was even suspicious of my food….. I suppose I was a bit wild too.
As I settled at home my family came to the conclusion that I hadn’t experienced much of life, they say I had a funny run and got tired very quickly.

It wasn’t long before I knew that my family loved me, they started to take me out to interesting places. I heard them tell people that I had something called a “high prey drive”. I think this means that wanted to chase small furry creatures, well even big ones too….. cats, squirrels, other dogs and even deer! I used to spin around, rear up onto my hind legs, lunge and pull on my lead! My family had to have their wits about them, that’s for sure!!

I had a brother back then and he attended DeWolf training classes and had also experienced a thing called “one to one” training which could help me to become the best I could be and keep me safe from harm. My family started to take me to DeWolf training classes where I met Wendi and the DeWolf family. I was taught “commands” and I was praised when I got things right!! I’ve been going ever since. I’ve met many other, like myself, “rescued” older dogs. I’ve also met young puppies who have their whole lives ahead of them.

I have heard about this thing called “treat training”, which I haven’t experienced at DeWolf. I understand when I have done something properly because my family (and other humans) tell me with their voice. I also get fuss, which I enjoy.

To be honest with you, I still want to chase creatures but I’ve learned that this isn’t safe (did I mention “sheep proofing”?... maybe another time). My family (and other humans) are able to give me strong commands so that I don’t slip back into my old ways.

These days I now like to visit National Trust properties, go to the pub and accompany my family whilst they experience the delights of fine dining!! I am told that I’m a pretty girl (despite my many scars) and a very well-behaved dog.

Am I the finished article? Well….no, there’s always work to be done and I’m learning all the time that YOU MOST CERTAINLY CAN TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS

Anyway, this is me, I’ll stop now as this is a long post. I have popped a few photographs on here, of me having fun and I hope you like them.
You will see that I have got lots of scars from my LBR (life before rescue), but I don’t think they detract from my natural canine beauty.

I hope to meet you and your humans in class very soon

Best wishes 🐾🐾

Wow! What a fantastic night we had for the 10th annual DeWolf Dog training charity quiz night.
An amazing £1284 was raised on the night, which will be donated to Canine Concern.
To date, this now brings the total of funds raised for charities by DeWolf Dog training to £19,500!
None of this would have been possible without the generous donations and support from you all.
Thank you all so much.
Looking forward to next year’s quiz! 💜

With a hot spell in the UK, here's our top tips to help keep your pooches cool, happy and safe 💛
More advice here: https://bit.ly/2WMTm4F

Image description: An infographic lists ways to keep your dog safe in warm weather. 1. Walk your dog when it's cooler; early morning or late evening. 2. Ensure your dog has plenty of water and shade all day. 3. Do the tarmac test: if you can't comfortably hold your hand on the tarmac for five seconds, then it is too hot for your dog's paws. 4. Take extra care with flat-faced, overweight, unwell and older dogs. Exercise is the most common trigger for heat-related illness so take care not to over excert your dog.
