It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that Selah’s beautiful Mom, Dr. Susan Smyth, passed away on New Year’s Eve after a long battle with cancer. She was a brilliant physician & scientist but she was an even better dog Mom (and cat mom!) She loved Carmine & Selah to pieces & it was her dream to have them provide therapy to patients at UK HealthCare. She leaves behind her loving husband, Dr. Andrew Morris & her two sons, Edward & William. Everyone at UK Gill Heart & Vascular Institute will miss her dearly. 🐾💔

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SELAH!! She's 6 YEARS OLD today! This is (former) Nanny Karen sharing her photos from last year when she was still at UK. She's doing great in Arkansas and has been polishing up her training so she can visit people on her new home campus. Her big brother, Carmine, is also doing really well! I miss them both terribly and not a day goes by that I don't think about them. Send Selah some virtual birthday love in the comments!

Nanny Karen here to tell you Goodbye’s are hard! Especially when you have brought so much love & joy to so many. Watching Selah leave today was tough. But I know she’s going to miss all of her UK HealthCare & UK Gill Heart & Vascular Institute friends so much! A big shout out goes to Dr. Susan Lephart, UKHC’s fearless leader for the Canine Counselors program. Another shout out to Bluegrass Barkery for always providing such amazing treats for Carmine & Selah. Can you ship treats to Arkansas? Selah is also going to miss her former handlers, Deborah and Elise. 💙 Lastly, I never thought I would become a therapy dog handler. It’s been life-changing. It’s a blessing to bring smiles to the faces of people who are going through a rough time for one reason or another. Selah isn’t finished just yet. Stay tuned for her adventures in Little Rock! 💙🐾💙

It is with sadness but great excitement that I announce I will be moving to Arkansas in a few short days. My parents have been offered wonderful opportunities in Little Rock at the University of Arkansas Medical School and I couldn’t be more excited for them.

Thank you all, UK staff, Michigan friends, past patients and families and everyone else in between for the love and support you have shown me throughout my therapy dog training and since I began at UK. It has been an awesome journey. Nanny Karen says she will miss me dearly and will keep you all updated on my new adventures. Cheers to new sights, smells, new pup friends, and Razorbacks? ❤️🐾🐗💙

Today was full of EXCITEMENT! It’s been approximately 15 months since Selah has been able to visit patients & families. Until today! You should’ve seen their faces light up! It felt good to get back into the old routine! 💙🐾💙

Oh, what a day!! It’s been a lonely year in the hospital for our staff without the love from Carmine & Selah! They were thrilled to clock in & get to work making people smile! Using strict protocols & proper sanitization procedures, they were allowed to visit the 8th floor today for some one to one therapy sessions. Staff visits will continue until such time that patient & family visits can resume. Such a happy day! 💙🐾💙

Flashback to last Wednesday after a relaxing rain & walk outside. Selah is missing all her Wildcat students. One of her favorite things is seeing a steady stream of students walk through this corridor on their way to class. They often stop to give her some love. 2020 has been a rough one, but we will get through this together! 💙🐾💙
