Presents been under the tree for over a week with 4 dogs having free run of the house no issues or concerns. Friend called today with her 4 year old pooch and as soon as our backs turned he was in the chocolates. The importance of teaching your dog not to touch anything that’s not theirs or they have permission to take can’t be overstated, train it from day 1 and you will never have to worry. It could just save their life too.
Come rain or shine he works his socks off every drive but the last drive he always knows once it’s over he gets on board for his lift back…so funny 😂🥰🐶

The importance of being steady around stock and distractions can’t be overstated in a working dog because you never know when you will be asked to pick up in a paddock full of extremely curious sheep…still one of my favourite photos 🥰😍
Recall on little puppy legs 🥰 start from day one making it fun to be with you and building that bond and you won’t have any issues. Pups that find their environment more fun than you will inevitably turn into self employed dogs, and while you can bring it back it’s far easier to make it the default. Time invested now will pay off hugely over the dogs lifetime…

Every dog needs a ‘job’ that feeds into its breed traits to be fulfilled. Boredom leads to bad habits and bad habits feed into negative breed stereotypes…it’s rarely the dogs fault in my experience

5 years ago today Harvestmoon was born…what a journey it’s been and I’ve loved every minute and met some amazing dogs (and owners), learnt so much about passing on my learning (attending at least 3 CPD courses annually as well as increasing my qualifications and practice) and what suits my personal style and different clients (still passionately believing in training the dog you have in front of you and not a one size fits all). We have had some challenges along the way (not least being Covid and issues with ground) and come through them all still smiling, we have helped over 70 dogs transition into the field with last season being our best ever (and I’ve loved having the privilege of watching dogs grow from that first retrieve/hunt up to watching them at some great novice friendly shoots smashing it), met some incredible people and generally made my semi retirement career a very happy time.
Hanging up my whistles and dummies at the end of year is going to be hard but I have health issues, travel, family and new adventures ahead which require my time and attention. I will still be doing the odd 1-2-1 for clients but groups and regular weekly slots are too much going forward. I’m super proud of all Harvestmoon has become and achieved and everyone’s support. Let’s enjoy the last few months 🥰🐶🐶🐶

Always ask and most importantly teach your children to always ask. Many dogs are not keen on children….they move and sound very differently to adults and are often face to muzzle height if they dash in and things go wrong.
Love this….hard as it is to accept sometimes we just have to admit that it’s down to us to explain what we want from our dogs better and sometimes it just doesn’t go to plan. If it doesn’t your dogs not being ‘naughty’ or ‘stubborn’ or any of the other traits we project onto them…we just haven’t shown them right in a way the dog in front of you understands😬🫣🤦🏼♀️🐶

About 6 years ago I did a ‘silent’ handlers course which focused exclusively on hand signals. It was a game changer for me (especially with a lab that was quick to reach threshold). Found this video from several years ago demonstrating this (with the added distraction of a wandering chicken 🤦🏼♀️😂). It’s well worth practicing and a little sequence like this now and again is more than enough to consolidate it and still keep your dog engaged and happy. Give it a try.
