Teaching, training, and proofing indications come down to minimizing the decisions a dog makes when it encounters trained odor.

This law is referred to as Hick's Law.
Simply stated, Hick's law is a psychological principle that states the more options available to make a decision, the longer it will take to make the right decision.

If it's not clear to the dog what it's expected to do in odor, then you have a dog that lacks confidence and will become anxious or frustrated. They may offer multiple behaviors trying to find what you will reinforce. Conversely, if we reinforce many different behaviors at source, then we create this chaos. It's not the dogs fault it's the fact we are unclear with the criteria that receive reinforcement.

This is where unproductive indications come in. If, for example, the dog offers behaviors that are similar to their in odor behaviors at or near an item or location that a handler percieves as productive, then it stands to reason it will be reinforced. The dog may be guessing or working, but because the handler reads this as an indication, they reach for reward, prompting, or marking that behavior. If the handler can't identify the difference between interest vs. searching or inspection vs. sniffing, then whose fault is the unproductive indication? It's not false if we reinforce it.

Creating or crafting a clear repeatable in odor behavior is good for the handler and dog. Limiting the dogs' indication to a deferred response that is clearly a behavior they only offer when they're in odor. Limit the dogs' choices down to one it knows will be reinforced versus making them guess what may. Ultimately, an indication is a signal to the handler. We should make this signal as easy to read as possible.

Remember, this is "A" way of thinking.
