DISEASE OUTBREAK ALERT 28/8/20

There is a potential salmonella outbreak occurring in the greater Auckland region. Please note the following.

Salmonella is a ZOONOTIC disease – it can infect and kill people.

Precautions:

Dead and dying sparrows or myna please report to the MPI Wildlife Disease Line 0800-809 966

If a sparrow or myna is found, handle with gloves, isolate and place in a box. Take to your local bird rescue. This is especially crucial if the bird is thin and there are signs of diarrhoea. WASH YOUR HANDS. Wash any surface you may have touched eg car handles

Please take care if feeding sparrows or myna in your back yard.

Hand reared babies doing well and now learning to sit on us and spend time with us. We had another two lutinos hatch in the last few days and waiting for the last egg from that clutch to hatch as well as another clutch due next week. Its all go here!

I have ended up having to hand rear three cute 'aliens' - lutino cockatiels - earlier than intended as parents were being slack! I would never start them this young by choice but needs must! So about every 2 to 3 hours (including through the night) I am feeding babies! I'll keep you updated with their progress!

I built a box for my quails today to keep them warmer. If anyone is wanting nest boxes or a quail box built message us. The workmanship was a bit slack here as I was only doing a quick rough box which then ended up being screwed and hinged!
