Part 2 🤦‍♀️
Guess the foreign body- Rex, a 2yr Ridgeback presented for acute vomiting for approx 3 days. Whilst he was clinically very well, a dome shaped foreign object was located in his stomach (picture 1) & second foreign object was observed more distally in his duodenum (picture 2).
Comment what you think Rex ate ⬇️⬇️answers will be posted Thursday

✨ HEPATIC ABSCESSES ✨

Liver abscesses frequently spread via the portal tract. Spread with intestinal gram-negative bacilli, or retrograde spread from the biliary passages with streptococci and anaerobes from the gallbladder are most common.

In this case, the patient had an asymmetrical, mixed echogenic liver lesion as pictured in Image 1. A hepatic abscess was suspected and hence, a sample was aspirated from the anechoic component of the lesion. This cultured E.coli and the patient was commenced on appropriate antibiotic therapy. Approximately 12 weeks later, a repeat ultrasound showed a more granulomatous, fibrotic change pictured in Image 2. Antibiotics were ceased and the patient remains well.

Hepatic abscesses may reoccur and repeat imaging may be required in the future. This is another example of how ultrasound is a useful tool in the diagnosis, attainment of samples from and monitoring of an infectious disorder.

✨ R u ok? ✨

A quote from Dr Seuss:

"Be who you are and say how you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind"

The act of self care is worth the effort - after giving so much of yourselves, we would like to ask all of our colleagues to pause for a moment today, offer a choccy or lolly to someone at work and ask them if they really ARE ok. And tell them if you ARE ok.

Because as vets and nurses, YOU make a difference.

Because as vets and nurses, you are amazing, talented and strong.

Take care of yourselves, and each other.

Poor little Harry was evaluated today for an echocardiogram. A loud murmur was auscultated bilaterally at his 8 week check and his vets organised an echo promptly. Unfortunately Harry pulled the short straw - bilateral outflow tract obstructions were observed, with marked ventricular hypertrophy. Although Harry's atria are within normal limits for size now, this is expected to change significantly over time and unfortunately will lead to either left and/or right failure

Guess the breed! 🐶🐶
If you had a look at our stories yesterday, we played a little game guessing the breed of this little cutie!
Most of you said Chihuahua x or Pincher.
The answer is a Prauge Ratter!
This breed originated from Czech Republic and is very rarely seen in Australia. They are a very small breed and only weigh up to about 4kg when fully grown. Although heart disease is not a known common health issue in these breeds, unfortunately this patient does suffer from heart disease.

If you would like to know more about heart disease feel free to email us at [email protected]

GUESS WHAT…WE ARE HIRING!

PART-TIME VETERINARY NURSE 👩🏼‍⚕️

An exciting and unique opportunity is available with VIMS! We are seeking a experienced nurse to join our team 1-2 days a week.

A little bit about us:
VIMS is a mobile veterinary internal service encompassing ultrasound, endoscopy and oncology – the key services we offer our clients. We have a solid group of general practice clinics who utilise us regularly, and due to steady growth, we are seeking a creative, motivated individual who will help continue to enrich our bond with our existing and new clients. We feel equally as strong about helping raise standards of care across our industry, as we do finding the greatest coffee in Melbourne!

A little bit about the role:
We are seeking an experienced vet nurse to join our team – depending on your preference, you could do 1 or 2 weekdays. You will be responsible for preparing and nursing of patients undergoing ultrasound, endoscopy or oncology treatment. You will also be involved with stock and inventory control (ie ordering of drugs and disposables), protocol development and a small amount of administration. Some of this administration may be performed at home. The role requires a high level of engagement with vets, nurses and practice manager across various clinics. No weekends, afterhours or public holiday work are required – we value your lifestyle and happiness! Remuneration is well above award and will commensurate with experience

For more information about this incredible role, or to apply, please email a CV and 2 references to Dr. Sue Ramoo at [email protected]

VSD in Cats 🐱 🐈
Ventricular septal defect, a congenital cardiac condition may first be detected in young cats on routine auscultation. As the left ventricle generates higher pressures than the right, blood is usually shunted from left to right, meaning that most young cats are asymptomatic at presentation. Over time, the left ventricle can become overloaded and this may lead to left sided heart failure. This poor kitty has a large defect, you can see turbulent bloodflow through the 'hole', which is measuring approx 4.5mm! 🙀🙀If you would like to know more about VSD in cats, email us at [email protected]
