Sioux Empire Pit Rescue We promote responsible Pit Bull ownership, provide breed education, and combat pet overpopulation. At SEPR, we believe in responsible pet ownership.
(137)

As an all-volunteer 501C3 rescue group in Sioux Falls South Dakota, SEPR's mission is to promote responsible Pit Bull ownership, provide breed education, combat pet overpopulation through community outreach, and find qualified homes for sound Pit Bull dogs in the United States. Because of our love for dogs and our knowledge of each dog's particular situation and needs, we work hard to make sure e

ach placement is the best one possible for both the dog and the adoptive family. Please do not be discouraged by our application process—think of us as doggie matchmakers! We know our dogs inside and out and will work with you before, during, and after the adoption process to find the right dog for you and to make the transition into your home a smooth and successful one—that is our commitment to you and to these dogs. Part of that is controlling the pet population, as hundreds of thousands of unwanted animals end up at shelters annually. Sadly, many of them don’t make it out of the shelter alive—and the odds of finding “happily ever after” are especially stacked against Pit Bull type dogs. For these reasons, SEPR makes sure that every dog that comes into our rescue is spayed or neutered before being adopted into a forever home. If you cannot afford to have your dog spayed or neutered, please contact us—financial assistance may be available. If your dog is spayed or neutered, consider contributing to SEPR, as the routine medical procedures for our dogs(spay/neuter, microchip, shots) are one of the biggest expenses the rescue has. Above all, spread the word—a “fixed” dog is a happier, healthier dog!

Sioux Empire Pit Rescue’s Footprint

My name is BJ, and I’m the foster coordinator for SEPR. I’ve been functioning in that role for six years and have been fostering dogs for our organization for ten years. I usually prefer to stay behind the scenes working with the dogs, and I’ve written stories like this before, but usually about dogs that are special to me. This time, I’m taking a different approach.

I’ve had 15 different foster dogs in my home over the years: dogs from large dog fighting cases, dogs that have been tossed aside like trash, dogs that were used for breeding to make money and then dumped when they were ‘too old’, dogs that have spent their entire life in and out of the shelter systems. I’ve worked with the countless dogs that have come and gone through the SEPR program.

I’ll be the first to admit that being in the rescue world for that long leaves one with a callous attitude towards humanity as a whole. I’ve seen the aftermath of terrible cruelty. I’ve had to make the decisions that end a life when the pieces were too broken to put back together or they were too sick to continue. I’ve witnessed things that will stay with me for the rest of my life that have changed who I am. Seeing such a lack of empathy over and over is discouraging; feeling like everything you’ve been doing has been pointless.

But I keep moving forward one step at a time because these dogs depend on me. They have been failed so many times before, so I will continue to pick up the pieces because they deserve so much more than what they have been dealt. Every dog that has come and gone takes a part of me with them; some take more significant pieces than others, but I would give all the pieces I have to take away their pain and suffering. Seeing these dogs change from scared shutdown "shells" of a life to happy, energetic, and excelling keeps me going day after day. Being able to help them navigate that healing is a gift I wouldn’t trade for anything.

I have walked hand in hand, paw in paw, with many footprints, and this holiday season, I ask that you give what you feel compelled to give so I can continue my journey with each of them. These are the gifts that make the most significant impact to enable our dogs and organization to thrive.

~BJ

This is your regular reminder that muzzled dogs are not bad dogs. It doesn't suggest they are automatically aggressive, broken, or mean dogs. It just means they need a muzzle for some aspects of their lives.

Some dogs need a muzzle for various reasons. Alumni Beef Cake has precise personal space boundaries, which is okay; he can have limits. When it comes to necessary things that will push his personal space boundary, we use a muzzle so that the people are safe and he doesn't feel the need to react. We use a high-value reward to help distract him from whatever needs to be done and leave a positive training association to be involved.

Today was nail day; every time we do his nails, it's the same process, so he knows what to expect. The muzzle goes on, the cheese wiz comes out, and he gets cheese wiz while mom goes around clipping and then dremmeling his nails. She can quickly and safely do his nails. He knows the interaction will invade his boundary, but it's not meant to hurt him, it will be over soon, and he gets his cheese wiz as a reward.

Beef's family always makes sure his muzzle is easily accessible and keeps several cans of cheese wiz in case of emergencies. SEPR alum Beef Cake isn't a bad dog; he has specific boundaries that need to be pushed with regular routine grooming and Veterinary care. Keeping your training fun with excellent high-value food lures is vital for everyone to be successful and comfortable together.

We firmly believe every dog should be muzzle-trained because you never know if or when you might need one.

Muzzled dogs aren't bad dogs!

🎄SEPR Foster Christmas Wish List🎄

Every Christmas, the foster dogs are asked what they would like from Santa 🎅.

While we know they would all love a forever home, we compile a list of items they would also love.
The items are listed on a Google document, which we update as items are received. The items are also available on our Amazon Christmas Wish List.

https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/324D1SLNWJL89?ref_=wl_share

A few things to note, the recent Georgia Transport dogs do not all have items listed yet, they are still settling in once we learn more about them their lists will be added.

The list is out in time to hit the black Friday and holiday sales! Help make some foster dogs really happy this holiday season❤️

Join us in saying Congratulations to our Volunteer of the 3rd Quarter, Brittany Petty.

Brittany has been with us for almost year now and has taken multiple dogs through training classes, planning events, day of event and reaching out to local businesses for their support of our rescue.

She is always willing to step up and help when needed with a smile on her face!

Brittany took Hartley (pictured) through the last session of Train-A-Bull and she did such a great job handling her energy.

So lets take a minute and say Congratulations!! 🎉🎊

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but SEPR Diamond wants to be everybody’s best friend! This girl is the life of the party. She exhibits joy and enthusiasm in everything she does and is searching for a family who loves life as much as she does.

Diamond loves her people, and she loves them big! She aims to please and has responded extremely well to positive training methods. With training, Diamond has learned to be calm and relaxed with her people, just as she loves chasing a toy or giving huge, sloppy kisses! Diamond does everything big, and loving her people is no exception.

One of Diamond’s favorite things is to go for car rides. This girl wants to see the world or at least take a trip with you to run an errand or two. She enjoys walking in the park and would be a great adventure partner.

After her adventures, Diamond would love to snuggle up on the couch with you and watch your favorite show or help you read a book. She enjoys spending time with her people inside and outside and wants to be included in the family.

Because Diamond is so enthusiastic and does not always know her size, she would likely be too much for a family with younger children. Her current foster family has older kids, and she does well with all family members.

Diamond would also do best with a person or family who wants to continue her training. She is such an intelligent girl and loves to learn new things! She is always so proud when she pleases her people and is always excited to enjoy some training treats!

Due to some minimal allergies, Diamond takes Apoquel and is on a grain-free dog food. She will need a family willing to continue this so she can be her best doggie self.

Diamond has a smile that will light up a room and will make even a gloomy day seem brighter! If you are looking for a best friend who will love you more than you even knew was possible and bring true joy to your life, you need to meet Diamond today!

Our volunteers are an integral part of our organization. They help our foster families with socialization, training, and exercise. They transport dogs, conduct home and reference checks, answer emails, plan fundraising events, and much more. We couldn't be more thankful for their dedication and hard work. In the end, we are ALL volunteers. We dedicate our time and hearts to this misunderstood breed. We work to change minds and lives every day.

The third quarter of 2023 has come and gone, so that means it's time to announce the foster of the quarter...Heather and Jeff!!

Heather, Jeff, and their family are brand new fosters, and stepped up to foster for the Snack Pack transport. They are currently fostering SEPR Vanilla Bean.

Vanilla Bean is an easy going girl, but she's had quite the medical work up on her leg. Coming in with an unknown injury requiring both FHO and luxating patella surgery, followed by 8 weeks of strict restrictions, and now physical therapy to help her learn to use her leg normally...that's a lot of vet visits, running around, and management.. on top of daily life, family, kids, work.

Heather, Jeff, and their family didn't back down from the challenge, and have rolled with the punches. Without dedicated fosters like Heather, Jeff, and their family we couldn't save dogs like Vanilla Bean.

So let's show some love to Heather,Jeff, and their family, we are forever grateful for all your dedication ❤️

Are you the kind of person who likes to relax with a sweet drink at the end of the day? Are you looking for a best buddy who would love to snuggle up and keep you company? Well, let us introduce you to SEPR Mai Tai!

One of Mai Tai’s favorite things is to pop right down next to you on the couch and wiggle his big head into your lap. This boy is definitely a Velcro kind of guy who wants to be as close to his people as possible. Who can blame him, though? His past life was filled with heartache and disappointment, so he is looking to find a family who will love and stick by him forever!

Mai Tai’s foster family is already so impressed with the progress that he has made since moving to South Dakota. With a consistent routine and lots of love, Mai Tai is becoming more confident and showing his fun side. Whether ripping apart a stuffy or walking around the neighborhood, Mai Tai enjoys doing whatever his people do now.

With Mai Tai’s age likely between 2-4 years old, this sweet boy is pretty strong and has moderate energy. So far, in his foster home, he is showing good signs of getting along well with the other animals in the house.

Mai Tai is also doing an excellent job with his training. He is an expert at sit, lay down and look, and he is working on waiting. His leash skills are coming along nicely, and he enjoys relaxing in his kennel when he can’t hang out with his people.

Mai Tai is sure a sweet treat and bound to steal the hearts of all he meets! If you want to meet this handsome guy and have room in your heart and a spot on your couch for a boy looking for a family who will love him forever, contact us today!

🐾 Foster Friday - we need your HELP! Brandi is one of THOUSANDS of dogs currently sitting in the shelter system. We cannot pull her to safety without an open foster home. This is where YOU come in!
———————————————————————
Brandi is a beautiful young girl who came to animal control LAST JULY!!!

Brandi is literally withering away both physically and emotionally at animal control, as you can see from her body condition. She is becoming stressed and depressed, waiting and watching daily as humans walk by her kennel and do not choose her. Wondering what she did wrong to end up like this.

Brandi has tested well with other canines and felines with controlled leash interactions. With solid leadership, we have no reason to think she could not excel in a foster home with one or the other.

SHE NEEDS YOU. Our community needs you. Fill out a foster application today, and YOU will be the bridge making the next transformation possible.

Note: Brandi is NOT a part of the SEPR program. She is currently on our intake waiting list. We want to help this girl, but we need an open foster home to be able to pull more loving souls into our rescue.

This distinguished gentleman is Puglsey.

Once upon a time we know that he had an owner that loved him dearly, but sadly fate had separated the two and Puglsey’s life drastically changed.

After almost dying of heat stroke when being left outside chained, SEPR had been contacted to assist in providing care and safety for this senior. He is SO lucky to even be alive, if a Good Samaritan would not have called that day, he would have died.

While he may be a little slower around the block, our team could not help but fall in love with his little swagger.

A stoic man, he has been so good with all of the veterinarian staff, animal control, and our volunteers. He simply wants nothing more than to just be loved.

As with most seniors, Puglsey had a mouth full of rotten and broken teeth that immediately needed dental work and removal to assist with eating more comfortably and without pain.

Losing three of his four canine teeth Puglsey has been recuperating ❤️‍🩹 on doggy kibble soup. His demeanor is still just as lovely now as the day he almost died when AC confiscated his overheated 🥵 body.

With so many new faces and lives saved in October for our small SEPR family, it is essential that each donation goes directly towards helping all of these beautiful lives saved.

Please drop a $5 for Puglsey today and help us with his continued vet care and expenses. 🙏 We know you will quickly fall in love with him as well.
