Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week reminds us that some animals wait far longer than others — not because they aren’t wonderful, but because of stereotypes or circumstances beyond their control.

❤️‍🩹 Some dogs struggle in the shelter no matter how much love and care we give them. For Skelly and Garvey, the stress right now is just too much — and what they need most (beyond adoption), is a foster home.

🐾 Skelly — Recently returned, he needs structure and daily training to get back on track. The perfect foster would give him routine, patience, and room to learn.

🐾 Garvey — A big hearted boy who’s most at peace outdoors or in calm spaces. In foster, his focus would be decompressing, lowering stress, and relearning his confidence (with some manners work along the way).

Biggie, Rolo, Frodo, and Finn may be small in size, but they’ve got big personalities (and even bigger voices — turn up your volume to hear all they have to say!) 🎙️

Meet Garvey! 🖤

This sweet boy is a 2-year-old hound/labradoodle mix who’s basically a puppy in a giant’s body! 🐾 Since he missed out on a true puppyhood, he’s making up for it now—bounding around with goofy enthusiasm and not quite realizing his own size. He’s been healing and growing here at the shelter, and he’s finally ready to meet his forever family! 🏡

Garvey would love a fenced yard to stretch his long legs and keep exploring life’s freedoms! 🐕‍🦺 He’s still brushing up on his manners, but he’s eager to please, knows a few commands, and just needs someone patient and kind to help guide him. With the right match, this big goofy soul will make the most loyal, joyful companion. 🖤

Skelly is back with us and ready for another chance at forever! 🖤 🤍

If he looks familiar, it’s because you’ve seen him before—he was recently returned through no fault of his own. 🥺Skelly hasn’t let that dampen his spirit though—he’s been busy working on his manners, meeting new friends, and of course, splashing in the water every chance he gets! 🏊🏼‍♂️ He’s as playful and loving as ever!

🐕‍🦺 This smart, active boy is wonderful with people and kids, but he’ll thrive most with a family who can keep up with his adventurous, energetic personality. A fenced yard, an active lifestyle, and extra time to engage both his body and mind are exactly what Skelly needs to be his best self. ✨

Today marks one year since Leia came to HSWC.

It’s not exactly something to celebrate — but it is something to talk about.

Let’s be honest for a minute. Leia hasn’t had many meet and greets during her time here. She doesn’t always make the best first impression when you walk past her kennel. She can come off as overly protective or standoffish. But that’s just one side of her.

What most people don’t see is the Leia we know outside her kennel: Playful, intelligent, goofy, loving, and incredibly loyal once she feels safe. She’s a dog who bonds deeply and loves hard, and protects that love with everything she has.

Yes, Leia has many goals to work on, but that doesn’t mean she’s not deserving of a home. In fact, it makes finding that perfect home even more important.

We truly believe for the right person — someone patient, experienced, and willing to look past her initial defense — Leia could be the most rewarding companion.

She’s waited a year for her person to come along. We’re holding onto hope that they will. 🤍
