❗️Mini rant warning❗️Last night, I was on my way home from dinner with my husband and saw a squirrel in the road, paralyzed from his waist down, trying to drag himself to safety by his front legs. No one stopped. No one even slowed down to pass me on the street as I tried to scoop him into a carrier. I rushed him to the emergency vet and received the defeating news he had passed on our way there. The WCP email and DMs are full of requests for assistance — “I don’t want my 8 year old cat anymore” or “there was one outdoor cat at my house and now there are 45 and I need you to take them all.” Where is a sense of responsibility or good faith in our community these days? One person cannot save the world on their own. This is a call to action to take initiative and BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN OUR COMMUNITY! Take action. Do good. Rant over!

Happy Friday y’all! Kitten season is in full swing and we need your help to keep up with all of the requests we are receiving! Last week, we were able to help a rescue in Southern Kentucky with $1,000 of vet bills and we cannot continue to support our community without your help! Can you spare $10 to help the cats of the Commonwealth? We cannot do this life-saving work without you! ❤️

Have you ever wondered what happens when a stray animal comes into care at Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control? Here's a quick breakdown of what happens:

🐾 Microchip Scan & Vaccination: The animal is scanned for a microchip and receives intake vaccines.

🐾 Documentation: Staff gather identifying information about the animal—species, color, age, gender, and weight—and then upload a photo into the computer system. Some call us the "pup paparazzi!"

🐾 Medical Evaluation: If there are any health concerns, the animal will be evaluated and treated by medical staff.

🐾 Comfort & Care: The animal is given food, water, and a bed to ensure their comfort and safety while being cared for by Animal Care Technicians.

🐾 Hold Period: By law, stray dogs are held for a minimum of five days, and stray cats for a minimum of three days.

🐾 Reunion Efforts: Our Animal Services team works to reunite lost pets with their owners by checking microchips, lost pet reports, social media, and community tips. Remember to keep your pet's microchip information up to date!

🐾 Adoption Process: If the animal is unclaimed, it will undergo a health and temperament assessment. If deemed adoptable, the animal will be transferred to the Lexington Humane Society for adoption.
