Want your business to be the top-listed Pet Store/pet Service?
Many of us have shared the same experience when it came to selecting the “perfect” dog food for our furry best friends. Our dogs are meaningful and valued family members but many pet foods don’t provide your dog with meaningful and valuable ingredients.
My first experience with dog food started 3 years ago. It was a beautiful Saturday morning when my family and I decided to make a trip to the grand opening of the Houston BARC Animal Shelter. After an hour of touring the shelter, my sons fell in love with a 10-week-old German Shepherd mix. At the time of adoption, we decided on the name “Jax” and the family was thrilled to make him our newest member. The shelter was kind enough to provide us with a small bag of goodies for Jax, along with a bag of puppy kibble. Jax was settling in to his new home, but there was one problem, he didn’t touch the kibble. The next morning, I made a trip to the local pet store to a grab a different type of puppy kibble. I was hopeful Jax would enjoy the new food but the intro to foods did not go as smoothly as planned. The first 30 days was nothing but trial and error when it came to kibble. Jax would only eat the kibble if it was mixed with cooked chicken and rice. I eventually transitioned him to a better grade kibble mixed with a packaged meat topper. At last we found a kibble that he liked! As Jax got older we were eventually able to wean him off the toppers. Jax stayed on the high-end kibble for a while until I started noticing a new issue. Jax was nibbling and biting on his paws and scratching himself more than usual. My assumption was the hot weather and humidity caused him to itch. His condition worsened and he started getting rashes under his legs and on his belly. I started searching the Internet for heat rashes on dogs and paw nibbling and eventually came across a few YouTube videos with some very interesting information. These fellow dog owners had the same issues with their dogs and discovered that the main cause was food allergies. They also went into detail how the steroids and antibiotics that were prescribed by veterinarians was only a temporary solution because the symptoms would eventually return, not to mention the long-term issues with many of these meds. After tons of research, these owners decided to introduce their dogs to a raw food diet and gained some phenomenal results. The itching and biting of the paws stopped. The rashes suddenly disappeared and the dogs were free of their previous symptoms. I was convinced that this raw food diet would also work for my Jax. Jax’s new diet included a combination of ground beef or pork muscle meat, organ meat such as beef or pork kidney paired with cooked sweet potatoes, chopped raw apples and carrots. Within a month his food allergies and symptoms were gone. It was this New York Times article in 2019 that made me glad that I changed my dog’s diet. The FDA linked several big-name dog food brands to heart disease. I was shocked to discover that I used one of these brands for about 2 years and it definitely contributed to Jax’s food allergies and symptoms. This experience, with my best friend Jax, inspired me to start a dog food company that uses the best human grade ingredients. And so began the inception of Butcher to Bowl.
