Common Mistakes with Bristlenose Plecos

Bristlenose plecos are tough, fun algae eaters, but even pros slip up!

Here are the top 3 mistakes (and easy fixes):

1. No hiding spots or driftwood
They’re shy cave-dwellers who don’t thrive without places to hide AND real driftwood to rasp on for digestion. Add 2–3 caves + a piece of driftwood.

2. Thinking they’ll just eat tank algae
They don’t just eat tank algae; most home tanks don’t have enough, so they end up skinny and hungry without extra food. Feed algae wafers, blanched veggies (zucchini, spinach), and pleco pellets once a day.

3. Overfeeding: they eat a ton and make tons of waste, so overfeeding quickly leads to dirty water and possibly bloat. Feed only what they finish in 2–3 minutes + do regular water changes.
