🥶 Baby, it’s cold outside! ❄️ With the temperatures dropping and winter in full force, make sure you are doing your part to keep your furry friend protected!

And remember, limit outdoor time in low temperatures ⏱️

• 32–45°F: Safe for medium to large dogs with thick coats. Short-haired or small dogs may need a coat.
• 20–32°F: Cold for small, short-haired, or elderly dogs—limit outdoor time. Larger, double-coated breeds are more tolerant but should still be monitored.
• Below 20°F: Dangerous for most dogs. Even hardy breeds are at risk. Use booties and limit outdoor activity.

This is not a typical Pet Menders post giving you an update on the latest and greatest in veterinary medicine. Instead, a more somber note. We are sending out this post to all our clients with some big news. Heather Dillon, our receptionist and practice manager who has been here since 2003, will be leaving us to move to the Western Slope. Those of you who have been with us for a long time will remember Heather moved for a brief time in the early 2000s but returned. She has found happiness on the Western Slope and her last day will be Friday.
I know this will be sad news for many clients that have enjoyed her smile while greeting you when you come to Pet Menders, her spot-on phone etiquette and all-around quality of her work. We will too. We are sad to see her go, but happy for her. Please feel free to come by and say happy trails to Heather before she leaves on Friday.

Today, we talk about black cat superstitions and wonder at all the myths and legends which surround them, and then embrace them as the fantastic feline they are. Black cats are found on every continent and in every culture, and it is no wonder as the black gene is the most dominant color for cats, particularly male cats.

Today we have a slight diversity of black cat colors. Solid black, known as a solid or self. These solid black cats can have three more different variations: coal black, grayish black, and brownish black. All three are considered solid black. There are three other black variations: black smoke, a black coat with white roots and rust black, and a black coat that turns light brownish in the sun. No matter which color a black cat is, one thing I think we all agree on is that black cats hold a fascination for us, and cat lovers will all agree that black cats are simply amazing!
