i was overwhelmed by the news of the Lahaina fires yesterday. Bees really hate this wind - they stop flying past 30knits. And they were probably destroyed in the fire as well. I went to hang out with the ladies to calm down. They were still buzzing.

messing around with my one handed queen catcher so I can practice dotting my queens. Queens live up to 4 years! There is a color code so you can see if a hive had lost their queen. In Hawaii hives often swarm much more often, so it’s rare to find an old queen - but now I’ll know for sure! 2022 is yellow. thanks and for my new toy.

so shiny! we unboxed our new extractor today. such a big day for us. when Howard died we sold off our 24 frame extractor cheap thinking there would be no way we’d every have enough hives again to need it. so to upgrade back to this 18 frame baby 6 years later is a big deal! looking good for honey season 2022. let’s hope there’s rain to make flowers.

it’s the season of robbing, when it’s easier to find a free lunch than try to get nectar from flowers. these bees found a leaky o-ring on an old bucket and went craaaaazy trying to get it. they will fight each other til the hair rips off their backs. Hawaii’s trees still know it’s winter- especially the invasive ones. real nectar flow won’t start again til february on the windward side.

Perfect drone comb with . Drones take longer from egg to bee than worker bees- on average 16 days. Usually our plastic frames can limit the amount of drones in the hive- they don’t do much more than eat and mate! But this hive was missing a frame and decided that drones were the way to go. The queen can flick a switch inside her body and lay an unfertilized egg instead. So cool to watch them emerge. .

Happy birthday Howard. I haven’t really brought up my mentor that much here on the insta. I think he’d be disappointed that i didn’t photoshop some antennae or something onto his head. He was the bestest mentor a girl could ask for. I miss him every day. And…. We’ll be back selling local Oahu honey at KCC tomorrow just like we have for the last 14 years. Come say hi!

It’s the time of year when our cactuses bloom! Bees are super busy in the morning collecting the nectar from dragon fruit and night blooming cereus cactus. Usually these cactuses are attracting other pollinators like moths, but in that brief morning window when they are still open bees will take advantage too. we’ll look for dragonfruit honey on the hives in a couple weeks :)
