*HAPPY BIRTHDAY HIGHLAND EQUINE VETS!!*

Today we are celebrating 🍾 our 3rd birthday!

Since starting up we have registered an incredible 1,042 patients.

We set up Highland Equine Vets with the aim of being more than the standard veterinary practice. Our aim has always been to champion the 'old-fashioned' approach, where your horses, ponies and donkeys come first, combined with modern state-of-the-art ambulatory equipment.

We couldn't do it without you, our steadfast supporters, so thank you. Thank you to the livery yards, to the farriers and physiotherapists who work closely with us, to the referral centres for their continued support and to our sponsored riders Redford Equestrian Chris Grieve and sponsored horses Mairi Scott-Macleod with Jet 🐎, thank you to all our wonderful clients and patients.

*Proudly independent- compassionately caring - clinical excellence*

*Wednesday drop in clinics*

We understand the cost of everything has and continues to take its toll on everyone. We as horse owners understand this and understand how important our horses all are to our sanity and own well being. With this in mind we have put our heads together to see what we can do to help.

You can email in to request an appointment at one of our "Wednesday drop in clinics". Take advantage of no call out/travel fee. You can have your horse health checked and get any niggles or concerns about your horse sorted out. This is for those niggles that you wouldn't necessarily think you need to call a vet out for.

What does the boss do on her night off from work?...

She does a client evening talk!

Lindsay went to Borlum last night to do an open discussion on some of the conditions and challenges facing horse health and welfare. There was lots of discussion and it made for an excellent interactive evening.

Thanks to everyone who turned up and joined in! What a great bunch of equine owners!

Following on from our recent post about the weather and issues with over conditioned horses due to grass growth...

I would like to congratulate all of our clients and patients who are in our Thursday weight loss group. Everyone in the group has worked hard to get their horses/ponies into a much healthier body condition score. It hasn't been easy but its really paid off. No laminitis for our Thursday members! I'm personally proud of each and every one of you.

For those who don't know about this group. I set it up 2 years ago with a group of dedicated and determined horse owners. It's a group who are accountable to each other. We ask that every Thursday we weigh tape our horses/ponies and send a photo in. We track the progress being made and we support and encourage each other. 🐎⚖️🏆

Thursday weight loss group- you should all be very proud!!

"What's going on with this weather?"

We hear this a lot at the moment. I've caught myself saying on many an occasion too!

We are seeing a big surge in laminitic cases at the moment. We would like to remind everyone to be vigilant about the risks of laminitis for your own horses/ponies/donkeys. The weather is definitely playing a contributing factor to the increase in cases. There's very little we can do about the weather so we need to focus on what we can control -

*Body condition / weight
*Levels of feeding
*Grass intake (quality / quantity)
*Exercise

These all relate back to ensuring our horses/ponies/donkeys are not over conditioned.

So let's talk about what we can control.

If you're concerned your equine may be at increased risk. First step is to pick up the phone. Because we can help.

With a vet stuck in Yorshire due to the wild stormy weather and the rest of the team struck down with Covid we are working on an urgent and emergency basis only.

Please bear with us as we navigate our way through this. Lindsay is on duty, she will be wearing a mask etc due to not wanting to spread Covid. If you have an appt scheduled and would rather have it postponed/rescheduled please just call to let us know.

Thank you in advance of your understanding.

We would like to welcome our newest member of the Highland Equine Vets Ltd team, Georgia Flaxman MRCVS.

We knew Georgia was a good fit for our practice team when we had her out to some joint calls and to meet the team back in early summer. It was very clear that she has great communication skills and an excellent client rapport is something Georgia strives for. This particularly impressed Lindsay.

Georgia has relocated from Yorkshire and whilst new to living in the area she has always had a love for Scotland and has enjoyed many happy times visiting family who live in the area. She has a passion for working with large animals and has enjoyed using positive training methods to help build horses’ trust and confidence. Outside of veterinary, Georgia can often be found running, cycling or exploring the hills with Luna, her Lagotto Romagnolo.

Our team at Highland Equine Vets would like to introduce our newest sponsored rider to add to our sponsoring! Charlotte Redford was ask to be a sponsored rider because we felt Charlotte's empathetic approach to her horses fitted well with Highland Equine Vets Ltd. Charlotte always puts her horses first; always horse before sport.

We asked Charlotte to give us an introduction to share with you -

I have been around and loved horses as far back as I can remember. Horses are the most wonderful animals. I find it is difficult to put into a few words why I love horses so much.

I started riding when I was aged 4 and we now have 4 amazing ponies which we are lucky enough to keep at a wonderful yard close to our home. I love time spent at the yard, mucking out, poo picking, brushing up, grooming, bathing ponies and just spending time in their company.
I love riding although it is such a small part of owning a horse, I get regular lessons from a few amazing coaches, each lesson is varied as there is so much to learn and I love improving my way of riding and my ponies way of going. My main pony Teddy is still young and it is important to me that he goes correctly. This year I have been enjoying taking Teddy out to some dressage competitions and have just started competing at affiliated competitions.

I am hoping to continue our affiliated dressage path, move up the levels, gain higher percentages and I would love to qualify for Scottish Championship and Petplan Winter Area festival. In between dressage outings I like to do some local shows, low level show jumping and enjoy lots of amazing hacks.

Thank you Lindsay for this amazing opportunity, I am honoured to be your sponsored rider. Thank you and your team for all of your help and continued support.

Lindsay and Alastair would like to take a moment to recognise it's officially been 2 years since they started up Highland Equine Vets Ltd.

Over that time our wee veterinary family has grown to over 800 patients, and continues to grow. We are incredibly proud of our team; Dani, Kim and Connie are all instrumental in making our vision for a caring, compassionate, independent family practice a reality.

Most importantly though, a huge thank-you to you, our clients for making this all possible.

Snap was quite adamant that there should be cake and champagne for breakfast!

Our team at Highland Equine Vets Ltd are proud to introduce our first sponsored horse, Jet 🐎. Jet's owner Mairi has kindly given us our introduction and some background to Jet -

"We bought Jet in 2017 when he was 6 yrs and after having him 2 months he took impacted colic and concussion in his back hooves. Over the next 2 years every time we did more than hacking he’d be lame. Numerous vet, physio, saddle fitting, back checks and sports massage sessions and he still wasn’t sound. Acupuncture was suggested so we got in touch with Lindsay. We started on intensive treatments and within 2 months we could do pole work, a few more sessions and we was jumping. Jet has now been sound for over 4 years. He can happily jump 70-80cms, in fact he loves xc. He is much freer in his back end, holds himself completely differently and loves to work. Jet’s X-rays show he has osteoarthritis, most likely caused by being pushed at a young age.
He loves an Acupuncture sessions and responds so well. You can see the difference instantly. He gets very jealous if Lindsay comes to the yard to see the other horses, she belongs to him 😅 ....."

On the 19th July one of our client's daughters is riding the Dava Way from Grantown to Forres. Sophie will be riding her Fell pony Pip and is hoping to raise money for the Equine Grass Sickness Fund to aid research into this terrible disease. Sophie has very kindly requested sponsorship for this excellent cause instead of birthday presents.

We wish Sophie, Pip and her mum, who will be accompanying her on her bike, on their 24 mile adventure the very best of luck!!

Good luck Sophie!!

Delighted for the excellent outcome. What a whirlwind foalling it was!

Foaling 2023..a whirlwind!
Dittany's c**t, as mentioned, was born late Friday afternoon. Two and a half days later all four were here!! 😍
Certainly a long weekend to remember!!
Names are being decided and there will be a lot more photos! 😁
We would not have had such a happy outcome without immense dedication from Highland Equine Vets Ltd and friends when a small problem with Destiny's foal escalated. Thank you Lindsay, Alastair and Luke 🥰

We never cease to be amazed and delighted by our wonderful, wonderful clients 💖
The fabulous girls at Borlum really exceeded themselves last weekend..
Touched by the sad passing of Lindsay's long-time inseparable companion Tusker, they conspired to commission a stunning portrait painting of him. Then in no mean feat of logistics, managed to spring a surprise presentation!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the lovely ladies of Borlum, a truly touching and loving gift.. tears were shed x

We just wanted to say a huge thank you to all our clients for their understanding during such an intensely busy period. As many of you already know, we will always drop everything to be there in case of an emergency. Time and speedy treatment are often so critical in emergency cases like colics

This last week has seen more than its fair share of such emergencies, and we'd just like to thank all of you who had appointments rescheduled as a result. We know you understand our triage system, but we all want to thank you for being so accommodating and understanding.
