Two years.
Two years of flashbacks. Two years of unpredictability. Two years since the scariest day of our lives.
Two years of overcoming. Two years of new found strength. Two years of advocacy. Two years of rebuild.
Von Willebrand’s Disease is no joke. What is a normal routine procedure for one dog could be deadly for another. What should’ve been a routine neuter turned into an almost two week ICU stay with multiple plasma transfusions and a second surgery. Looking back, it hurts to know this could have all been avoided if the proper pre-surgery blood tests had been run and if things hadn’t been rushed.
I’ll never forgive myself for putting Oz in the position to have the experience he did but I know most of it was out of my control. Instead, we celebrate him still being here. 💙

“Yes my dog is muzzled. No, I don’t have to explain why.” - all while Oz is sassing me in the background.
Dogs can be muzzled for a large variety of reasons. Oz is fear reactive and resource guards me. If he thinks another person is getting too close he reacts without a second thought. We muzzle for his safety and the safety of others.

We have some fun news to share!
Oz got the opportunity to model for and get to work with again! It was such a fun experience made even better by getting to support a small business we love!

As most of you know, Oz is selective with his people, not a fan of children, and really just prefers to be by me and watch from the sideline.
We haven’t done much public work/training lately so I decided we were today. Oz got his booties and goggles on and we headed out to a car show.
I debated putting the muzzle on as there was going to be people milling about but didn’t want to crowd his face. So, I decided to trust him and watch for cues. He met and was instantly bffs. We had no reactions and he made friends/got attention from many people - A HUGE WIN for us!
To reward the good day, we swung by to get some goodies. He knows the people there but has to be persuaded into letting them close to him. Today, that was not the case. Again, I trusted him with no muzzle and he was happy to see everyone. He even showed his belly and laid on the floor with them! He never does this - even with me!!
Now - this doesn’t mean anything has changed. He’s still reactive and he’s still selective of his people BUT today was a good day. Today, I got to see the old Oz again and it made my heart happy.
Today also made me think about how I need some more in short sleeves/tank tops for summer wear 😂

Happy Friends!
We did some reflecting this weekend and have decided that we will be stepping up our muzzle training outside of the apartment. Oz has been doing great but I’ve been keeping him out of any sort of situation that could lead to a reaction instead of working through them. So, we are going to do more training on that and getting us both comfortable again.
This sweatshirt from is so comfy and has great meaning. I know a lot of you reactive dog parents will understand! Yes, Oz wears a muzzle. Yes, he is a bite risk. No, those aren’t the only traits that describe him. He’s loyal, goofy, dramatic, and dependable - but only to those he trusts. He can be the goofiest boy if he is comfortable around you. So, just because you see him with his muzzle on or having a meltdown, doesn’t mean that’s him 24/7.

Almost a year between these two photos but these two doods are living their best lives. It’s crazy to think about how much changes in a year.
A year ago Oz’s reactivity wasn’t in full force yet. He was selective but still wanted attention from other people. Today, he’d rather sit back and let others have the attention. He is more selective and has a bigger meltdown with his triggers BUT is better at communicating to me when he’s uncomfortable.
While reactivity has changed our dynamic, we both are learning and growing stronger as a team. Oz is communicating more and I’m listening to him more. It’s a two way street and each day we understand a little bit more about what the other needs.

I think what I love most about these photos is that Oz is relaxed and happy. I don’t see this side of him outside of the house very often. His reactivity can be tough to handle some days. To say I wasn’t nervous as hell about this shoot and if he’d get along with everyone would be a lie. He made it seem like this was his job. He posed like a pro, made some new friends, and caused some laughs. This boy surprises me more every day. ❤️

Oz got to spend the long weekend doing many things!
He got a bath at to prep for his photoshoot with for 🥰
He got to hang out with .lab.denali at grandma and grandpa’s house.
He was spoiled with a new pool just for him!
And he got jealous that Denali had the ball he wanted even though the one he was playing fetch with was on the ground by him 🙄
Overall it was a beautifully spent weekend and we can’t wait to see what shenanigans are in store this weekend!

Happy Dog Mom Day to all our friends ❤️
I’ve been making it a point to spend more time with Oz in social setting and letting him work through those situations. We got a membership to an exclusive dog park in a nearby town and he’s loving it. He greets other dogs, plays ball, and checks in so often. At a previous dog park, I think he felt too overwhelmed. This one is relaxed, has so much more space for all the dogs. The people are friendly and it’s a relaxing time for both of us. I can’t wait to see what the summer brings

Happy
Look at how happy and at peace Oz looks. He got to go on a hike with his friends. He had no reactions but did tense up around a particularly active toddler. To be fair, I was a bit nervous about the toddler too so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why he was more on edge. He did well though. A little grumbles but no big reactions or barks.
Children are tough for Oz. There is a group of children at our apartment that terrorize him and egg on the reactions. He’s gotten better about not focusing on them but still struggles with his anxiety around them. We take it one day at a time and one child at a time.
We cherish these days and experiences where Oz gets to be as much like a normal dog as his friends.
