Hello Facebook friends 👋
My baby, my passion and my own grown business. Gloucester Dog Walker - Happy Paws turns 10 years old!, this June. That's a decade of loving, caring for and walking dogs 💖🐾
I really want to mark this occasion in the old memory bank! by doing something big, outside of my comfort zone and more importantly by giving back.
My passion is (obviously dogs!) but more so rescue dogs. Dogs that maybe haven't had the best start in life. These are the dogs I want to give back to. This is why I will be raising money for Teckels Animal Sanctuaries. A independent sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of cats and dogs
I am super excited (and nervous) about this upcoming event (still loads to do)
Please join me. Fundraising info coming soon. Any help, donations, or sponsors will greatly be appreciated

Why we shouldn't always be letting our dogs make decisions and choices for themselves🐾

Important tip and lesson here that can really turn your dog's behaviour around, giving you better management and control of your dog

(The caveat to this is of course good choices and good decisions of which we should always praise) 🙏💖

To all reactive dog owners here's my tip for this morning 🐾

27/09/2022

When your dog wants something from you for example to get outside for a walk this is your opportunity to use training! When a dog really wants something from you they are far more likely to give you the behaviour you want in exchange for what they want! Therefore reinforcing the training you are trying to do and resulting in more success.A great video to watch includes improving dogs manners and control ❤️🐾

Great advice ultimately we all want the same thing ❤️🐾🙏 to live in peace and harmony with our dogs 🐾

Great advice ultimately we all want the same thing ❤️🐾🙏 to live in peace and harmony with our dogs 🐾

One of my favorite posts that I will share often ☺️

Whichever approach you choose follow: remember that the end goal is having a dog who can live comfortably, safely, predictably, and kindly in our human world.

To have a canine companion who can coexist and learn to live with the humans and animals, large vehicles, things that are dangerous to eat or approach, screaming kids, speeding bicycles, strangers, vacuum cleaners, dogs on walks, cats in driveways, squirrels in trees, and moments when you have to leave them home alone.

Have fun.
Teach cute tricks.
Set boundaries.
Love spending time with your dog.

Focus on things that move
your dog's behavior in the right direction.
Stay consistent in what you ask.
Don't just practice the easy stuff.
Challenge your dog while staying fair.
Adjust your training plan accordingly.
Explore new approaches and techniques.
This journey isn't always simple or the same.
Your dog will show you what they need you to change - more of something or less of another- based off of the behavior they are giving you right now.

Never forget, it's our responsibility to teach our dog to live harmoniously in this world. They are counting on you ❤

Quick video here on flight risk in nervous and anxious dogs! This is my experience from walking dogs for 8 years. A great listen especially if you have struggled with recall ❤️🐾

Recall! this is a very common problem a lot of dog owners struggle with 🙏🐾 and learning your dogs triggers or what might cause them to lose recall and then getting out Infront of it can really help you have better control and management of recalling your dog 🐾

Always a good reminder the foundation to having a well behaved and well mannered dog starts with leadership 🐾🐾🐾

A very common question I also get asked often as a dog walker! 🐾

A very common question I also get asked often as a dog walker! 🐾

Let’s examine this.

Most dogs people get are from shelters or rescues, and these dogs are all altered. And even with purebreds many dogs are also altered. So most of the dogs, at least in the U.S., are already spayed/neutered.

Now, if you poll dog trainers across the country dealing with behavior issues, my guess is that their numbers of intact vs. altered would be pretty close to the numbers I see.

So if the majority of dogs are already “fixed” then we shouldn’t be seeing such huge numbers of behaviorally challenged dogs—because they should be better behaved and less problematic if altering them sexually actually made any discernible difference.

The thing which ACTUALLY “fixes” the dogs we see isn’t surgery, it’s leadership, structure, rules, and accountability—but that reality is one that is fraught with owner effort, owner transformation, owner personal responsibility…owners embracing a far more challenging reality.

It’s up to you what decisions you make about whether or not to alter your dog, just make sure the decisions you make are based on sexual reproduction, not behavior modification.

A new concept here I have been learning about. 💖🐾

Are we positively reinforcing Negative behaviours in our dogs? 😱

Includes types of reinforcement that can be used. It's very interesting, have a listen! Let me know what you think?

I love this! what a great way of thinking about transitioning of a dog when you put in clear boundaries and expectations. It will not be easy at first but you will end up with a better behaved dog with less behavioural problems and happier and calmer for it 💖🥰

I see so many owners get this backwards. Shooting for “happy” as the primary goal, rather than “good”. Nothing wrong with happy, of course, but it’s a terrible place to start when working with dogs.

If a happy dog is your overriding, all-consuming priority from the start, you’re going to have a lot of problems.

Fearful, bratty, entitled, possessive, disrespectful, dog or human aggressive, or just plain disobedient dogs need different initial priorities.

You don’t solve problem behaviors by making dogs happy or loving them better, you solve them by addressing them. And that addressing might create a period of discomfort, uncertainty, adjustment, overwhelm...even being bummed out. (Having to toe the line when you’ve danced all around the line can be a bummer at first.)

Dogs who are transitioning from one space to another might not look perfect, they might not be ecstatic. But the important word here is transitioning. They’re changing. Change isn’t always easy, and doesn’t always create happiness out of the gate. In fact, it rarely does.

Yet I continue to see countless owners and trainers viewing happy dogs as the all-consuming priority. As if somehow happy dogs magically equaled good dogs. (Just view a dog park full of happy dogs bullying and brawling, or happy dogs jumping on guests, or happy dogs happily running away from their owners to chase squirrels or other dogs at the park.)

Happiness will come, but it needs to be put in its proper place priority wise. Get the good dog - a well-behaved, polite, obedient, safe dog - first, then the joy and freedom and comfort will naturally come.

If you only focus on having a happy dog, you’ll likely never have a good one.

A great video for you guys here! On balanced training, what is it? and what are the benefits? How to use it to get the results you want out of your dog.

Please note correction can be as simple as vocal inflection and simply saying "no" so it's clear to your dog that you were not happy with that behaviour or action. Correct does not mean being cruel or abusive to your dog at all 🐾💖
