I frequently get asked if I have any adult dogs available and Iā€™ve never been able to say yes, but now I do! Iā€™m looking for a perfect home for this young gentleman. Here is his ā€œresumeā€.

He is almost 2.5 years old and a confident, happy, active boy who LOVES people, and is always game for a new adventure. He loves frisbee and is a good little retriever and a very good watch dog. He will often watch TV, and has a keen eye for birds and neighborhood critters like deer and squirrels. He is happiest with people and is used to going everywhere with his human.
He was originally placed with the goal of doing some therapy type work. With some work on his manners, he would be the perfect candidate for this as he just loves to love. He just needs to know when to dial back the enthusiasm a bit sometimes.

Health: Neutered, with all shots up to date, and in perfect health. Both parents have been fully health tested (heart/eyes/hips/patellas) and come from reputable breeders with generations of health tested breeding dogs. He had one a**l gland abscess that was dealt with quickly and has his a**l glands expressed at the Vetā€™s office every 3-4 months as a preventative measure, with no further issues. He is insured with Trupanion and that insurance can be transferred to his new owner. He has no pre-existing conditions on this policy.

Diet: He is currently eating ProPlan Small Breed Chicken and Rice. He is very food-motivated and has no allergies. He enjoys all kinds of ā€˜humanā€™ food like bananas, cantaloupe, pumpkin, blueberries, tomatoes, avocado, yogurt, apple., etc.

Obedience Training: During his first year, he attended puppy classes and formal obedience training. We use the basic commands of ā€˜sitā€™, ā€˜standā€™, ā€˜waitā€™, ā€˜comeā€™ and ā€˜downā€™ but he also knows ā€˜spinā€™, ā€˜roll-overā€™ and ā€˜shake a pawā€™. We use ā€˜leave itā€™ and ā€˜drop itā€™ but it depends how badly he wants something, if he will follow direction. His recall is quite good. He does know ā€˜heelā€™ but still could use more work to use it consistently.

Crate Training: He will sleep in his crate at night but is also quite happy to sleep with his human. He is not happy being crated during the day, but he is not destructive if left out.

Grooming: He is brushed regularly but is not keen on his back-end being touched. He is not a fan of nail clipping but enjoys his bath and having a blow-dry. He will also tolerate teeth brushing.

Socialization: He does well at daycare and is great in a buggy at Home Depot or HomeSense. He is used to a quieter homelife and will alert to doorbells and any maintenance workers that might be on site.

The ā€œBadā€ Stuff

He loves people so much that having a visitor to the home is very exciting and he might forget his manners.

He struggles with some seperation anxiety. He is happiest if heā€™s allowed to follow you everywhere in the house, even to the bathroom! As every current cavalier owner can attest, this is normal cavalier behaviour!! However, he will panic if heā€™s not allowed to. He is not destructive, but avoiding putting him in that position is in everybodyā€™s best interest while you work through it. He will not chew your house apart, or eat your walls or anything terribly dramatic. He will scratch up the back of your door and whine or bark, so if having perfect doors is important to you, heā€™s not your guy. When left in the house, he does eventually settle on his own, but will possibly be vocal initially so a condo/townhome will not be the right environment for him.

He has recently become a bit dog selective. He has attended Daycare weekly for over a year and has been a favourite of his care provider who has never had any issues with him with other dogs. We know for sure that heā€™s not happy with unneutered males, and he doesnā€™t love puppies, which is not uncommon for mature dogs. Puppies are cute, but pretty annoying when youā€™re an older dog! However, he has been tolerant and has no issues living here with my polite female puppy. Any reactions that he has ever had that were less than positive, were all on leash.

He is not good with cats.

The Perfect Home

His perfect home is a single family home with a yard. It doesnā€™t need to be a big yard, but an outdoor space of some sort.
He needs a moderately active owner/ family who is committed to him and willing to put in time to help him be his best self! That includes daily exercise, training (private and /or classes, which I can help with if heā€™s local to Victoria), and lots of affection. Have I mentioned that he just LOVES people!! Heā€™d love to have older kids around, but may be a bit too bouncy right now for littles. Heā€™s an incredibly easy dog to live with, and he has a great off switch in the house, but heā€™s not perfect (who is?). Itā€™s important that his new owner is dog savvy and understands some aspects of dog behaviour and management. He would like his new person to work from home or be retired. He would also love a calm dog to live with. Some of these things are negotiable for the right person!

He is looking for a new home as heā€™s not adapting well to a move from a quiet suburb home, to a city condo. I can assure you that this decision was incredibly difficult for his Mom, and we all have his best interest in mind. He is not a rescue and he is not free to the first person who wants him. He will stay with me until the perfect person comes along, and I will continue to support him and his new family for his whole life.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or share if you know of anyone looking!

I got the funniest simultaneous messages from 2 puppy owners yesterday evening. Miloā€™s (formerly Archer) Mom and Nanaimo Piperā€™s (formerly Lavender) Mom both messaged me at almost the exact same time to tell me they had met each other! I thought what a small world, because they donā€™t even live in the same city. Now here is where it gets even weirder! Miloā€™s ā€œGrandmaā€ and Piperā€™s ā€œGreat Grandmaā€ live next door to each other, but in a different city than either of the puppies, and both families happen to be visiting their out of town families and outside in the yard at the same time. What are the odds?! Love that my Castleglen Family thinks of me when this stuff happens!
Here is one photo from each side of the fence! šŸ˜‚

The Final Pupdate!

Scarlett (Castleglenā€™s Scarlet Maroon) has stayed about as close by as possibleā€¦ sheā€™s firmly planted herself in my lap and our hearts.

Scarlett was a much quieter puppy than most of the others, and was often picked on a bit so she learned early on to just sit back and observe. She was the only puppy that scored anything besides a ā€œperfect pet puppyā€ score on our temperament testing, as she was on the less confident, shyer side. I suspected that once the other puppies all left, she would blossom and I was right! Now she is super confident, but very polite and respectful. She LOVES to play with her Mama all the time, and Maja is quite happy to oblige her. They are always found together and itā€™s very obvious that she is her motherā€™s daughter, they are so similar in so many ways. She is very snuggly and wants to be in our laps all the time, just like her mom. Sheā€™s started puppy classes, and been working with me on some basic conformation handling skills, like standing still for 2 secondsā€¦ thatā€™s a tough one! Sheā€™s been to Fishermanā€™s wharf and seen seals, put her feet in the ocean, been camping, watched (and slept through) a noisy football game, attended several of the BabyDog puppy social classes and always enjoys being around dogs of all shapes and sizes. She has taken everything in stride and never been concerned about anything. She has so far been the easiest puppy Iā€™ve ever had, but sheā€™s currently in the ā€œput everything in your mouthā€ phase so thereā€™s lots and lots of supervision required for the next few months! We are making headway with the potty training and Iā€™m looking forward to having a living room carpet again soon hopefully! šŸ¤ž

Thanks to everyone for joining me on this puppy raising adventure! Itā€™s been a lot of fun, a lot of energy, a lot of tears and a lot of laughs. Iā€™m forever grateful to the families that take these guys and promise to love them for all of their years. I love being just a tiny part of that journey for them.

Our next litter(s) are planned for next spring, so hopefully all goes well and we can do it all over again! ā¤ļø

Piper part deux, known in our house as ā€œVictoria Piperā€ or ā€œSky-Piperā€ (Castleglenā€™s Bigger Than the Whole Sky) is another girl thatā€™s nice and close in Victoria. Iā€™m so grateful to have so many puppies close by!

Piper was originally being held back as a show prospect. As she grew, and her destiny changed, she was the only one temporarily left without her ā€œpersonā€. While I had people that were interested, things kept falling apart for her due to no fault of her own, and I wasnā€™t about to let her go to anyone. She has such a vibrant energy that lights up a room, she needed the ā€œperfectā€ family. I was looking for someone for her who was FUN, this girl oozes fun! Someone who has a great sense of humour, who loves to adventure, and includes their pup in their life. Her amazing new family had already been to visit the puppies at a time when they were all spoken for, so when she became available, they thought hard, asked ALLLLL kinds of questions (which I love! I want people to educate themselves before they jump into a 12-15 year commitment!) and decided to take the plunge. Iā€™m so glad they did, as they are perfect for each other ā¤ļø. Follow her on Instagram to keep up with her exciting adventures!

Here is what her new mom has to say about her.

Piper is the sweetest and softest little thing. She absolutely loves her hippie toy and anything that crinkles. She also loves tags. Tags on pillows, tags on toys, tags on clothes, etc.... She is a ferocious eater and is learning to use a snuffle ball to find her food. She loves tucking her head in rolled up yoga mats or going under things. She love hanging out under the camping chairs in the yard.
She came to work last week and did so well. Everyone commented on how confident she is and how soft she is.
Her papa says she's as soft as silk.
Piper is so smart and is learning lots of new things and has a number of commands down quite well. She is hopefully going to do some agility or scent work once she is old enough.
She has only recently started going on small neighbourhood walks and wants to explore EVERYTHING! She has FOMO and wants to be a part of everything.
She sleeps so well in her crate. We are working on being left alone at home and she mostly does well. Only a few little protest presents.
She loves to chase butterflies and ants. Reminiscent of her fur brother who loved chasing spiders.
She is such a cuddly little thing and it was just what we needed after losing her fur brother Porter. We are so happy to have her as part of our family.

Roxy šŸ’›

Roxy (Castleglenā€™s Say You Loved Me at Stillstream) lives in Ladysmith with 2 BIG sisters! She was chosen as a puppy with show and breeding potential for her new mom who is an experienced and successful breeder of Newfoundlands. Im so excited to have 2 little girls from Maja that Iā€™ll see in the show ring!

There was some apprehension initially about how Roxy would fit in with one of her cranky sisters, but sheā€™s been (mostly) polite and is quickly reminded of boundaries and respects them if she gets a bit carried away! Here is what her new mom has to say.

Roxy is much like a spitfire roaring through the house with much enthusiasm. Her two big Newfoundland sisters mostly ignore her (thank goodness lol) She is a happy, fun and friendly puppy who brings joy wherever she goes. She had only been here one week when I set out on a week holiday and she accompanied me. I have to say I was a little nervous bringing this tiny little puppy with me. Two ferries and a choppy ride in a little zodiac boat was all good with little Roxy, she had the best time on Gambier Island exploring and making friends. Then two nights in Langley and two nights in Port Moody was all taken in stride. Thank you Karin for this beautiful, outgoing and confident little girl and now my new awesome travel partner.

I just know that everyone has been waiting for a Pedro update! šŸ‘€
Pedro (Castleglenā€™s Fearless Leader) is named after Pedro Sanchez, the prime minister of Spain. Their family has named all of their pets after political leaders šŸ˜‚. He is embracing his free spirit, and inner hippy and loving life on Saltspring Island. Pedro has an adorable Affenpinscher brother, W***y, who was purchased from a less than reputable breeder and unfortunately has had a few costly health issues. This time, Pedroā€™s mom was set on being a more educated buyer and sought out a responsibly bred puppy, and Iā€™m so glad she found me! ā¤ļø. Here is what she has to say about him so far.

Pedro is nothing short of a delight and a ray of sunshine for everyone! He and W***y have settled into their new life as brothers . W***y very rarely tells Pedro off and is extremely tolerant of the puppy behaviour !
Pedroā€™s grandmother has built him a ramp and obstacle course in her back yard which he ADORES ! Agility may be in his future ( W***y sits there as if to say ā€œ you know they still give you the cookies if you just sit there and look cute brotherā€ lol )
He is growing at an insane rate and is already near the height of W***y and not far off weight wise . He has however turned into a bit of a grazer with his food and less wolfing down at warp speedy lol !
He has become a minor island celebrity as I have brought him to work a few times and now itā€™s all anyone asks about ā€¦. I have been stopped at the grocery store ha !
All in all he is simply put, perfection.

Alwyn ā¤ļø

Alwyn (Castleglenā€™s Villians and Fools) is now living his best life keeping laps warm in Sooke. His new Dad is another that has been very patiently waiting for the ā€œrightā€ puppy to come along. When I choose puppies for people, there is SO many factors that come into consideration. I care very much that my puppies are successful, but I care just as equally that the human families are successful with their puppies too. That the qualities they wanted in a dog, align with the dog they are getting! Due to some mobility challenges, it was important that his Dad got a puppy that was calmer, and didnā€™t need big adventures for hours everyday. Because of this, he specifically waited for a Maja puppy, as sheā€™s our resident ā€œhomebodyā€. She loves nothing more than a good 7 hour afternoon nap on someoneā€™s lap šŸ˜‚. Alwyn was always fairly laidback, and SO easy but he was the first to come over and whine at us to be picked up and snuggled. He was born to do what Cavaliers do best, and that is love unconditionally, all day, every day ā¤ļø. Here is a little blurb from his Dad.

He's got his puppy training coming up, which is good because he likes jumping up on people and is starting to bark if he doesn't get to jump up. Not in a mean way. He doesn't bite. He just loves sitting on laps. My uncle and aunt came for a visit and he's been running around the field behind my building on leash and then he'll sit on laps on hours.

His first groom is on the 9th at Wiskers and Waggs. No shaving, just a bath and ear check. The vet said he looked great.

All about Piper šŸ’œ (one of themā€¦ thereā€™s 2!)

Her new family fell in love with Dizzy last year. While Iā€™m sure they would have been happy with a Maja puppy too, their hearts were with these spunky little Dizzy girls. They say all good things come to those who wait, so I was really excited that Dizzy made the perfect puppy for them!

Another island girl, Little Miss Piper (Castleglenā€™s Find it Dizzying) is up in Nanaimo. For anyone who hasnā€™t owned registered dogs before, the registered name identifies the dog and cannot be duplicated by other dogs. Each of my litters has a theme, and the registered name and the litter ā€œcall namesā€ reflect that. With these litters, each puppy was named after a song, and then the registered name is a lyric snippet from the song. How fun to have her momā€™s name in her song so we had to use it ā¤ļø

Here is what her new mom has to say about her.

Piper has been a little ball of energy since we brought her home, always ready to play and run in the yard with big sister Millie. She's learned that bringing the frisbee or ball back means even more playtime and is getting better at it.

Although the cats are still warming up to her, she adores them and is slowly getting her way into their hearts. She's a little love bug that wants everyone to be her best friend, human and animal alike. So far, she's gone to 2 puppy classes and is a quick learner who is eager to please her humans by doing her new tricks.

She's practicing her walking on a leash in the backyard and is doing really well. Hopefully, she'll be able to join Millie on big girl walks around the neighborhood soon.

Her favourite napping spots have become the couch or the living room recliner, but her kennel is always the best place for bedtime. And while she can be too curious to sit still for long, cuddles are starting to become a favourite of her's too.

Clover šŸ€

Clover (Castleglenā€™s Taken by the View) got her name from her new Momā€™s human daughter who has the ability to find a 4 leaf clover šŸ€ anywhere! She was very special to us here, so it was so very important that she found the perfect home. On a trip to the island, her new family bumped into Banks, from Evieā€™s first litter, loved him, contacted me and then over the next few weeks all of the stars aligned and Clover packed her bags and moved to North Vancouver!. Here is an update from her Mom.

Clover is settling in at her new home and is very cuddly, which I love. I take her pretty much everywhere, and she is relaxed and playfully taking in our world. Yesterday, I played one of the Karinā€™s little videos of the latest litter playing outside. Clover came running and stared at my phone, watching and listening.

Her reflection in the mirror confuses her. She barks, growls and swipes at the mirror. Not sure how to explain this to her. We have goldfish in our pond outside, with chicken wire on top so she cannot fall in. Clover loves to watch while I feed them.

She has a four year old golden retriever sister named Violet. Violet went down on her front haunches to play and put a paw on Clover. Clover screamed and wailed. Violet went and hid under our hostas and would not come out for a half an hour, and felt so bad. Clover was fine. I told Karin. She said Clover and her Mom are both drama queens!

Currently teaching Clover basic things. So far she is a quick learner! We have also signed up for puppy school. I bought bells for our front door to teach her to ring them to go outside, and would appreciate any advice on teaching this!

I love to just be still with my coffee and Clover at 5 am on our porch smelling flowers, and watching and listening to the world and all the birds coming and going. Iā€™m hoping that Clover will eventually be my painting and drawing buddy, but it will be awhile I know. So far we have just sat in my studio, and I told her all about art.šŸ˜ŠšŸ¶

She has my heart. Thank you Karin for all your hard work and loving care. It shows!

Love reading all about Cloverā€™s brothers and sisters. They definitely all have their own little personalities and bring so much joy to our world.
