Happy New Year from Castleglen Cavaliers! Today we also celebrate the puppies turning 6 weeks old. They are so so sweet and really developing their own little personalities. We love to watch them play with everyone and how much they learn from the big dogs. Their teeth are SHARP and they love the taste of toes! If there is anyone who would like to visit over the next few weeks, please reach out and let me know, they are looking for new victims ❤️

Thank Goodness for Auntie Dizzy 😍 She’s the best Auntie these little piranhas can ask for! She “wants” to be in there, and can leave anytime she likes. She just loves the babies and they LOVE her!

5 weeks old and the sweetest little presents I could ask for 🎁. They are getting much harder to get pictures of but they still made the nice list this year! Momma Evie is still being super mom and keeping them clean, happy and well fed. They haven’t shown any interest in real food yet, but it’s early still. They play hard and sleep hard! They’ve enjoyed some time out of their pen in the living room with all of the big dogs, but that requires a lot of supervision. Their pen is going to grow again soon, as they are needing more space to run and wrestle and play when I can’t be watching them. This week we’ll start having a few visitors and over the coming weeks we’ll extend an open invitation for puppy play time for anyone who would like to enjoy some puppy breath. Merry Christmas from all of us at Castleglen!

Here’s the 4 week pupdate!
Lots of big changes this week. The puppies are so much more engaged with their surroundings. Eyes and ears are working all of the time! They are going to start on some real food this week, so things are about to get messy. All of the big dogs are so sweet with them, and Maja and Dizzy in particular really can’t wait to get playing with them. It’s cuteness overload around here these days ❤️. It’s a big day for the puppies, it’s moving day! They are 4 weeks old today and have a new pen in the living room for during the day (they’ll still sleep in the whelping box at night for a bit). In another few weeks, they’ll pretty much have the run of the whole living room and kitchen area! I love seeing them take each new step ❤️

Here’s the 3 week pupdate!
All the puppies opened their eyes earlier in the week so this week has been a week of a lot of change. They are starting to get up on their feet, but they are pretty chunky so they are a bit slower to get going than my last litter. They also have teeth just starting to poke through so Evie’s wonderfully attentive mothering is starting to wane… poor Mama! She’s still doing her job, but she needs a bit of convincing sometimes!
These little elves are definitely looking forward to Christmas 🎄🎁🎅🏻

Puppies are 2 weeks old already! All of their eyes are just starting to p*ek open, but London has his open the most and it’s so sweet to see his little expression. Evie is still doing a great job feeding babies all the time and keeping them spotless. She has lots of milk for all of them and they are fat and happy 99% of the time. ❤️

Evie ❤️

Evie, Eever Beaver, The Beav… so many names for such a sweet little girl. Evie has earned her Novice Sprinter Title and is working towards her Rally Obedience title. She loves to work and will do anything for her Momma. She has the patience of an absolute saint. We have been so lucky to keep in touch with all of her puppies and she is so good to them. Everybody who meets her, loves her and her tail NEVER stops wagging!

She has maintained her passing heart and eye clearances done annually by board certified cardiologists and opthamologists. After a missed breeding on her last few cycles, we are really hoping to have some more beautiful puppies from her soon, but Mother Nature will determine that one, keep your fingers crossed 🤞

Dizzy 😵‍💫

Ms Diz is still growing, but will always be on the smaller side, which means she fits perfectly on Autumns pillow at night! She’s starting to grow some more coat, but still has a lot of maturing to do. Some dogs just aren’t in any hurry to grow up!

She is primarily Autumn’s dog and so I haven’t done much with her in terms of performance, but she has started on her sprinter title, which she loved!

In June we attended the Canadian National Specialty and were so fortunate to be in the presence of so many amazing, knowledgeable, responsible and kind breeders. She didn’t bring home any points, but she had a great time!

She is the most versatile little girl. She plays well, eats well, sleeps well, travels well, camps well, loves everyone she meets and has the sweetest smile that you will ever see ❤️

Castleglen Update - it’s been too long, sorry!

In February we welcomed Maja (Schneeflocke Vom Kaninchengarten) here, all the way from Germany, and she has been a wonderful addition to our home. She’s so silly, and wiggly and just loooves to cuddle. I love her expression and her bone, and I’m excited for what she’s adding to my program. She has passed her first heart clearances, done by a board certified cardiologist, and patellas with her eyes to be done in the Fall. She has already obtained her Canadian Championship in only a few shows and has started on her sprinter title. Now that she has her CH, we’ll be starting into some obedience. We joke that she doesn’t listen because she doesn’t understand English, but we know she just doesn’t really care 😂

It was a blur of energy and excitement today while we had the whole litter able to come back for a visit! They are all beautiful and I’m so proud of their people for doing such a great job with all of them.

A Plastic Straw versus Dangerous Isoxazoline Flea Meds…😱

This plastic straw melted in the dishwasher. My husband said “I’ve put it in the dishwasher many times”. Well, this was the “first” time it fell to the bottom! 😱. And the last…

My melted straw is a perfect analogy to Bravecto, Credelio, Simparica, Trifexis, etc. - all flea and tick meds with meds in the isoxazoline family. You can give them to your dog and never have a problem until that one time….that one time they have a seizure; that one time they have irreversible neurological damage; that one time when they die. 😢

Amongst my breeder friends, two pups were returned after they suffered permanent neurological damage and 4 dogs have died. Cavaliers tend to be especially sensitive to these drugs.

I go to great lengths to educate my puppy families about these dangerous drugs but all that can fly out the window when their wonderful Vet says “here’s a great product to take care of your flea problem”!

People!!! You MUST be an advocate for your pets. These drugs have a long history of problems. Just recently the FDA made these companies put a warning label on the boxes: “may cause neurological side effects”. The Vet that gave my friend this medication gave her a single dose - do you think she even saw the box? If she did, the Vet would have probably reassured her that her dog would be fine…😢

And that’s a wrap folks! Lots of emotions today as I watched these little guys move on to their forever homes. Thanks to everyone who followed along, and huge thanks to the lucky few who took one of these puppies home to love ❤️

Just in case anyone needed to see 5 SUPER smart 9 week old puppies (and an 8 month old puppy!) not only learning to be polite at their gate to come out, but also all waiting to get outside to go p*e! So proud of these little ones. This is our last night all together and the last 10 weeks have been an absolute rollercoaster ride! I have learned so much and couldn’t be more grateful to have 5 absolutely incredible families for these guys to grow up with. They are so loved by so many ❤️

Tonight I “lost” a puppy. It happens all the time, I do a head count and get to 4, then I have to figure out who is missing and what they are getting in to! I looked in all the usual places, in the tunnel, down the hall… she was gone! I had accidentally left the bedroom door open, and this little Lovebug, after only a week of crate training, had put herself to bed already! (She’s also the only one who has scratched at the door to go out and potty). What a smart little cookie 😍

Interactions like this are why it’s important for these little guys to stay with their family beyond when they are done nursing. Evie has a lot more to offer to them than just milk! Now that are weaned, she’s really starting to enjoy them!

8 weeks old! The puppies had their first vet visit this week and we officially have 5 perfect puppies. First shots and microchips are done, and they just need to grow and learn a bit from their brothers and sisters before they go home in 2 weeks. I thought I would be ready but I’m not ready!

Week 7 - COVID Edition 😷
This week has brought down 2 of 3 humans with COVID. The puppies are really missing their visitors this week, but we’ll be healthy and sanitized and ready for visitors again soon!
They are changing more, our quieter pups are starting to blossom and our busier ones are starting to settle. They LOVE to be outside and scratch at the door to go out and play. They are such a joy to have around right now and I’m sad that my days left with them is coming to an end soon, where has the time gone?!

Evie is happy to have passed her annual heart clearances!

This breed is very much in trouble if as breeders we don’t continue to ensure we are breeding heart healthy dogs. For us, that means a full day off of work and a trip to the mainland to the only veterinary cardiologist in the province. Vets can (and do!) miss heart murmurs so it’s really important that these checks are done by a board certified cardiologist.

As purchasers of puppies PLEASE do your research and ensure you are seeing actual copies of recent heart clearances. I will add photos of a couple of different ways that may look. I’m always happy to help people understand what they should be looking for, even if they aren’t purchasing a puppy from me. We need to apply pressure to the “breeders” that aren’t doing testing and tell them it’s not ok.

Meanwhile, my co-pilot is just happy to have busted out of jail after 7 long weeks home with babies!

6 weeks old! We are having so much fun! They are hard to get pictures of now unless they are sleeping. They are eating real food now, and Evie fed them for the last time yesterday, so she gets to retire from responsibilities now and just have fun with them.

Jane is our kinda lazy, mostly quiet observer, but when she gets going… look out! She’s tough!! She’s not shy, but she’s also happy to just hang out in the crate when everyone else is visiting. She’s super calm *most* of the time, but does have opinions on things! Despite a full week of thinking she is too good for dog food, she has finally caved and decided it’s not so bad.

Cali is just the cutest little peanut, and she looks like a little doll. She’s can handle her biggest brother like a boss, even though he’s almost a whole pound bigger than her, but she is as sweet as Honey.

Michael is all boy! Busy, busy, busy! He’s the first one awake and last one to go to sleep. He LOVES his Auntie Dizzy and Uncle Floki and has no fear playing with the big dogs. He’s always one of the first to come running for food! He is the best snuggler, he just melts right into you.

Mary is our little extrovert, our Walmart Greeter puppy.
She is everybody’s friend. She’s the first one to come out and say hi to everyone, whether she has met them before or not! She wants in everyone’s lap, loves to cuddle but is also perfectly independent. They all play together, but I find her entertaining herself with a toy more often than any of the others. Her little tail never stops wagging!

And Bert, our sweet little Bertie-boo is just the perfect mix of all of them. He is Mr Easy Going! He just goes with the flow, never complains, always takes the cutest pictures because he is just so co-operative. He’s happy to eat, happy to play, happy to sleep… just Happy! The perfect representation of a Cavalier.
Can’t wait to watch them grow and develop even more over the next month!
