🥳🎓🙌

I am extremely proud to tell you all that after a tough 6 months of studying, that I have passed my membership exams in Veterinary Behaviour! This extra qualification means I have additional study and expertise in veterinary behavioural medicine, and can now call myself a behaviour vet!

It's been an extremely challenging 6 months, juggling my clinical work, behaviour business, and the occasional moment of personal time 🤣

My dogs and my family have been amazing, always supporting me and accepting less walks and hang time! My friends and co workers have also been rockstars, I'm so sorry I've barely seen you all socially!

My study group of behaviour vets have been wonderful, to go through this huge process alone would be impossible. I'm so proud of the knowledge we've all gained, whatever the result of exams

All in all, I've gained so much insight and understanding, improved my skills, and become a better vet thanks to this exam.

I can't wait to continue to spread my knowledge of behavioural medicine, helping dogs in consults as well as giving my seminars. Thanks for following!

Day 2:
Medication + Behaviour Modification

Using medications in behavioural plans can be controversial and complex to navigate in the dog training world. This presentation will cover in depth as to how the nervous system is involved in behaviour, how medications can work, and how to identify which dogs may benefit. A broad range of behavioural diagnoses will be discussed, and the underlying neurological changes and treatment plans explored.

It will also walk participants through building relationships with vets, and how to support clients and dogs who are using medications.

Common issues such as separation anxiety, aggression, noise phobias and more will be covered in case studies, to illustrate how behavioural modification and medication can be used hand in hand to produce great outcomes for dog and client teams.

Participants are welcome to bring any current cases to be discussed in an open Q&A as examples. We also welcome submission of questions prior to the seminar.

Dr. Michelle Rassool
Day 1:
Afternoon -
Handling + Restraint

For many people, the first time their dog requires restraint is when something needs to be done - think injections or blood collection at the clinic, pulling a grass seed out of the fur at home, clipping out a mat, or giving eye or ear medication. Depending on the temperament, experiences and beahviour of the dog, this may be fine, or a real challenge!

If you haven't thought about intentionally teaching yourself and your dog handling skills, now is the time to start - before you have a problem that requires handling.

Day 1 will cover topics such as
* biomechanics of restraint, and the importance of how the handler can help
* typical positions you need to introduce your dog to
* how, when and if to purposefully introduce discomfort
* teaching and using consent behaviours to produce dogs that can volunteer into uncomfortable positions
* building resilience
* teaching the dog 'optional' and 'non-optional' handling

Give your dog a great chance to overcome all the handling challenges that life has to throw at them. Benefits include:
* reduced need for sedation/anaesthetic or stressful restraint in the clinic
* improved ease of administering medications at home, more effective treatment without vet intervention
* increasing hygiene through more effective grooming and nail trimming
* better relationship with your dog
* skills that you can use on other dogs in your care
* helping others that may need to handle your dog in an emergency
* giving your dog confidence and control back after painful or scary experiences that have made particular handling issues a challenge.
