Bowie, as a rescued puppy, was adopted by Paws Giving Independence (PGI). His owners could no longer care for him so PGI got him the care he needed and then began basic skills training. He did so well that he was placed in the Helping Paws program at the Logan Correctional facility and began training as a bona fide service dog. I met Bowie in 2019 on a home furlough to see if he would be a good fit with my life. He was scared and timid at first but quickly acclimated so well that I became his final foster home. We began personal training so he could learn my needs and we established the bond needed to move forward.
When Bowie and I became a team on May 28th of last year, I never dreamed how much he would change and improve my life. Just five days after moving into my home he saved my family and I from a fire that had broken out in the early morning hours. His barking woke us up and my wife was able to put out the fire before anyone was hurt. Ever since then, I sleep better at night knowing that my Bowie will protect me. While this cemented our bond, he does and means so much more to me. During the day he has become my little buddy following me around opening and closing doors, turning on and off lights, throws things in the trash for me, picking up my legs when they fall off the wheelchair, and has become my best friend. Before Bowie came along I did not go out very much. In my mind, I always felt like people were staring at the man in the wheelchair. Now I am much more inclined to go places with my family because I feel like people are no longer staring at the man in the wheelchair, but rather their attention is drawn to the beautiful service dog and I love that!! He has reestablished my confidence and supplied me with a real sense of independence that I haven't felt in years! To say thank you just seems so insignificant for what PGI has done for me!
