Jockeys and their get-up
Besides having the right pieces of equipment, it's said that the rider or jockey is one of the most significant contributors to an equine's win in any horse racing event. Aside from knowledge about the runner, the race track, and other nuances, they must also be equipped with the right accessories. For safety purposes, jockey changes may be necessary if the initial rider isn’t completely prepared for the race.
Here’s a rundown on the different accessories that a rider should have when horse racing:
Silk refers to the rider's shirt, usually provided by the horse trainer or owner
Breeches are snug and lightweight pants that prevent chafing and keep riders from sliding off the saddle
Safety helmets protect the wearer from severe head injuries following a kick, fall, or knock. Some jockeys wear racing helmet covers as accessories to quickly identify them on the racetrack.
Vests protect a rider's body from kicks and falls. While riding vests can't completely prevent injuries, they can at least minimize the risks of serious injuries by absorbing some of the impact.
Boots ensure that riders' feet are in the correct position while the horse is moving. More importantly, the proper boots can prevent foot injuries and keep your grip on the stirrups.
Riding gloves protect a rider's hands from scratches and blisters. More importantly, they enable jockeys to grip the reins more firmly.
Essential horse tools and accessories
Horses are also equipped with plenty of accessories just like the Jockeys riding them. While Jockey accessories are mostly aimed towards safety, runner accessories focus more on improving the animal’s performance on the track.
Saddles are special seats mounted on the back of the horse. The saddle is cushioned with saddle pads, and are designed to distribute the jockey's weight on the back of the horse while also doubling as a shock absorber.
Stirrups are metal tools attached to either side of the saddle. It works to support the jockey in riding the horse. Stirrups enhance a jockey's stability by keeping their foot planted on the horse's sides. Riders can often use safety stirrups that prevent their foot from being trapped if they fall.
Blinker hoods cover the horses' eyes and ears so that they can only see straight ahead. A horse can be unpredictable even if it's well taken care of, so it's crucial not to startle or alarm them. This essential horse racing tool enables the equine horse to focus on the race and remain calm.
Bridles are head harnesses typically made of leather. They have a metal part called a bit, which goes into the horse’s mouth.
Reins are straps attached to the bit and held by the jockey during the race. Reins are used to guide the horse into making turns, speeding up, or even slowing down.
Halters are straps that run across the horse’s nose and head, and are meant to stop or discourage the horse from moving on its own
Racing whips are short, stiff whips that feature long flappers, and are used to tap the horse on the side to signal the horse to run faster. The whip must not be used to forcefully strike the runner, and different races have different policies regarding how many times the rider can hit the horse. Well-trained runners can finish an entire race without the jockey having to use the whip, in which case, the run is called a “hand ride.”

Cooper is a 6 yr old grade gelding, standing at 15.1hh! He is very well broke to ride! Cooper has great ground manners and is a gentleman at heart! He is safe for all levels of riders, and loves to please! He is the biggest sweetheart and will follow you around like a puppy!
Cooper will ride English, Western, Ba****ck and even Bridless! He will pick up both leads, stop, and back up very nicely! He neck reins and moves off of leg pressure! I have rode him all over our farm bridless! He doesn’t mind tarps, and loves big bouncy balls! He will stand while you mount and wait for your cue to go. Cooper loves jumping and does a great job! He is smooth and super fun to jump with!
Cooper will go out on the trails alone or in a group. When riding in a group he will ride in the front, middle, or back, whatever his rider prefers. He doesn’t mind obstacles and will cross and go through with ease! I have rode him on the road, he is traffic safe and 100% sound!

PARIS is the sweetest you find anywhere! This is the type of horse that will make a trainer out of anyone!! She’s as cool as a cucumber and smarter than most people!!
She’s got about 45 days on her. She’s green but in the most reliable sense of the word! When I tell you nothing rattles her, I really do mean NOTHING RATTLES HER!!! I ride her at a different place constantly and she steps off flat footed no matter where you have her. Changes in her environment don’t see to get her adrenaline pumping.
This mare is the one that most intermediate to advanced riders can take and finish without the fear of getting seriously hurt from “dumb c**t shenanigans”!!
She saddles perfectly quietly, takes a bit very easily, stands rock solid while mounting, hops right in a trailer, stands tied all day, pick up her feet and just does everything she should!
She’s been lightly trail ridden as well and on the road some. She doesn’t seem too concerned with general traffic.
Confirmationally you can’t fault her! She’s stout and strong enough to hold down a bull, athletic enough to do the ranch and cow work and just zippy enough to get a job done quick!
She lives in the pasture 99% of the time. Good with other horses and has been around other farm animals

Okay, folks, this is the sweetest gelding who is a little over 15.2hh and needs a job/home.
I’ve been working him back into a regular routine as his last few years have been random saddle time but mostly pasture.
He’s the most western horse who neck reins, has no vices, easy keeper, and LOVES attention. (I have braided his mane weekly and he is the sweetest about it)
Really quiet and lovable!
Asked 6🐴🐴🐴 at first but we are looking to get him into a place that can appreciate and utilize his awesomeness - taking honest solid offers to the right home.
