We said goodbye to Daisy the senior boxer yesterday and started new petsitting adventures with Obi. This little guy is awesome and super communicative. He brings you his leash when he wants to go on a walk and hits his food bowl when it’s time to feed him.

We had to turn down a lot of requests for the holidays unfortunately. Always best to book sooner than later if you’re planning on traveling. We’d love to love on your pets and give you that peace of mind knowing they are well looked after. ❤️

What a delight it is to be dog sitting this wonderful mini schnauzer, Ruthie in sunny Qualicum Beach. We spend plenty of time outdoors soaking up this glorious and unusual November sunshine. What’s not to love? I have the best occupation in the world. 🐶❤️

I just finished cat sitting this gorgeous feline. I’m so busy with dogs that cat sitting was a nice change of pace and so easy! I missed my pups though and I’m happy to be puppy sitting now. Never a dull moment in the life of a pet sitter. What can I say? I love them all.

Last spring I spent 6 incredible weeks dog-sitting Trixie. The Oceanside became our hub for fun and frolic. From playful games to exploring the great outdoors, every day was a new adventure!

We got to play at the Ravensong dog park, the one By the Qualicum Beach airport and we even got to go to Englishman river falls park and little Qualicum falls.

Trixie's infectious energy will charm your heart. ❤️

Meet Daisy 🌻 My loyal companion for the week I am petsitting in Qualicum Beach. She’s a 12 year old Boxer. Let me tell you, she’s full of beans for her age. The life of the party!

Boxers are known for their playful and spirited personalities. Here are some fun facts about this breed:

🐶 Energetic Athletes: Boxers are highly energetic dogs and require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. They are known for their agility and love to play.

🐶 Brachycephalic Breed: Boxers have a short muzzle and are considered a brachycephalic breed, which means they may be prone to breathing difficulties in extreme heat.

🐶 Expressive Faces: Boxers have very expressive faces and are known to "talk" to their owners with a variety of amusing facial expressions.

🐶 Kid-Friendly: They are often called the "Peter Pan" of dog breeds because they retain their playful and puppy-like demeanor well into adulthood, making them great family pets.

🐶 Clownish Behavior: Boxers are often described as clowns due to their goofy and playful behavior, which can provide endless entertainment for their owners.

🐶 German Origins: Boxers were originally bred in Germany and are descendants of hunting dogs. They were used for hunting large game like wild boar.

🐶 Protective Instincts: Boxers are known for their protective nature and make excellent guard dogs. They are fiercely loyal to their families.

🐶 Unique Coats: Boxers come in a variety of coat colors, with fawn and brindle being the most common. They also have a distinct white "mask" on their face.

I saw a kid walking his lovely lab having a great time and then he gave him a big old yank on the lead, which was on a collar and my heart did that achy breaky thing.

Underneath that strong looking neck, are some vital life supporting structures connecting your dog’s gut and nervous system to the brain.

If you have a big dog that lunges or pulls on the lead, a collar is not going to stop him. A harness is not going to make him lunge or pull more. However, it will distribute his weight through a part of the body designed to protect the organs instead of the full pressure being on the neck and all it contains.

A yank on the lead can cause emotional associations that lead to behaviour issues and pressure around the neck can cause multiple physical injuries some terminal.

Neck injuries include bruising, whiplash, headaches, crushed trachea, damage to the larynx, fractured vertebrae, neck and spinal cord injury and paralysis or neurological problems.

If the parasympathetic nervous system is tweaked through a tug to the neck the vagal reflex can cause instant death.

Higher intraocular pressure can cause serious injury to dogs already suffering thin corneas, glaucoma, or eye injuries.

It has also been linked to hypothyroidism as the collar rests on the area of the thyroid gland causing damage.

It can impinge the nerves supplying the front legs leading to an abnormal sensation in the feet that can present as a dog that starts licking their feet. Often misdiagnosed as having allergies.

A dog's epidermis is only 3-5 cells thick, in humans it is at least 10-15 cells thick.

Excessive pressure can cause damage to the dog's eyes, larynx and thyroid gland.

Particularly risky for puppies under 6 months, a time during which the cartilage of the trachea is still delicate.

A dog that feels pain and discomfort on saying hello to another dog, or trying to sniff the environment, is in danger of associating other dogs or other stimuli in the environment with pain and discomfort resulting in a dog that we would label “reactive” and/or “aggressive” when on lead, “but ok when off lead”.
