It is, arguably, the most coveted title in a young rodeo athlete's career– the Resistol Rookie of the Year. Unlike the world champion title, rodeo athletes only have one shot at this crown. Forty of this year's NFR qualifiers were past Resistol Rookies of the Year, including Riley Webb, the 2022 All Around and Tie Down Roping Resistol Rookie of the Year, and Sage Kimzey, 2014 Bull Riding Resistol Rookie of the Year.
After rodeoing on their permit and earning more than $1,000 in PRCA rodeos, rodeo athletes compete the following year as a “rookie.” This is considered their first official year as a professional rodeo athlete, as they are now an official PRCA Contestant Cardholder.
Nine rodeo athletes rose to the top of their class to claim the prestigious award.
This year going into the NFR, three contenders vied for the 2023 Bareback Riding Resistol Rookie of the Year at the Thomas & Mack. Each time Keenan Hayes, Kade Sonnier, or Dean Thompson nodded their Resistols in the chutes, they were throwing their hat in the ring for both the rookie of the year title and the world champion gold buckle. For the first time in rodeo history, a rookie brought home the world—Keenan Hayes, the 2023 Bareback Riding Resistol Rookie of the Year.
Five of the rookies competed in the arena this last week, including the three contenders. Ryder Sanford and T Parker will also be making their debut at their first NFR.
Congratulations to the 2023 PRCA Resistol Rookies of the Year!
2023 Bareback Riding Resistol Rookie of the Year – Keenan Hayes, Hayden CO

Get Ready For The Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo!
Established in 1933, the Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo is held every January in Odessa, Texas; and for professional rodeo cowboys, it's the beginning of winter rodeos in the great state.
What started as just a stock show, quickly grew into a premiere horse show in 1940; and by 1955, the event began welcoming professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls to Odessa to compete. Now, the rodeo is a major draw for fans to experience the event, but the stock show remains a very important piece as the only junior steer show in Texas exclusively for Hereford cattle and only includes fine wool lambs in the lamb show.
n addition to the rodeo, there is a ladies' breakaway roping, a team roping and team roping match, a rodeo dance and a well-respected queens contest. Speaking to the prestige of the queens contest, the current Miss Rodeo Texas, Brylee Johnson, carried her Miss Rodeo Sandhills title to the state pageant. A successful event in both stock show and rodeo regards, the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo awards more than $15,000 in scholarships alone to local youth and young adults.

The Love Story of Country Music's Jelly Roll and His Wife Bunnie XO
They're the couple setting country music on fire - former hip hop artist Jelly Roll and his wife Bunnie XO. But their real life love story? It's straight out of a romantic country ballad.
👉 Click https://tinyurl.com/yc33p4dc to check out Bits N' Spurs for Country Western News: Keeping Pace with Today's Rodeo
It all started with a chance meeting at a Las Vegas show in 2015. Bunnie attended Jelly Roll's concert and their connection was instant. Though she was spoken for at the time, the seeds of romance were planted.
Fast forward a few months - Bunnie was single again. And when Jelly Roll came to town to shoot a music video, she not only opened her home to him while he lived in his van, but her heart too.
From couch crasher to sharing her bed, this was a whirlwind romance made in country heaven. Within a year, they were husband and wife. And in classic Vegas style, they renewed their vows in 2023 because, as Jelly quipped, they couldn't agree on their actual anniversary date!
Through her husband's darkest times, Bunnie was the "beacon of change" - his rock, his inspiration, his biggest fan. As Jelly Roll's star has risen, Bunnie has been by his side every step, starring in his videos and shining just as bright on the red carpet.
Their secret to success? In Jelly's own words: "Uncomfortable conversations, prioritizing communication, laughing at the small stuff, and never taking anything too seriously."
It's an all-American love story grounded in country values and plain-spoken wisdom. From inauspicious beginnings to touring's biggest stages, Jelly Roll and Bunnie XO are painting a portrait of partnership that's downright swoon-worthy.

Celebration of Heritage: 35 Years of the Black Hills Powwow
The 35th annual Black Hills Powwow welcomed participants from all across the United States and Canada to South Dakota this past October. "Come Dance With Us" has been the longstanding theme for this prestigious Native American cultural event celebrating the beauty of Great Plains Indigenous song and dance traditions.

There were many different dance categories for various styles and age groups, with seven placing positions in each category. The Women's Cloth Dance featured both Southern and Northern regional styles, with most dancers carrying a fan, purse, and shawl regardless of their outfits' variations.
Each year, the powwow dance competition grows as it attracts new dancers from diverse Native nations across all age groups. The dancers' regalia helps distinguish the different dance styles performed. The Grass Dance has become a highly competitive form of Northern dancing, believed to have origins from young boys adorning their outfits with grass.
The Jingle Dress dance remains one of the most recognizable Native American dances. These dresses are easily identified by the rows of metal cones called "ziibaaska'iganan" that create a distinctive sound.
For three days, the event was a spirited celebration honoring the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples in America. Events like the Black Hills Powwow allow these traditions to be preserved and shared with pride.
