Ten years ago, I started Sassy Pup to have some “fun money” for my family. I vividly remember setting-up for the very first time at the Carroll County Farmers Market. I had a huge table with just three jars of treats: peanut butter, chicken, and beef. I was excited and terrified all at once. Every time someone would walk past my stand, I would over eagerly invite them to try our homemade dog treats. And then I anxiously waited for the next market, hoping that a return customer would say that their dogs loved our treats.
Fast forward a decade (that just sounds crazy), and we have 16 different flavors (and not an inch to spare on our table) of dog treats. We’ve learned over the years that it’s important to have a wide variety for all of our fur-friends who have different pallets and dietary needs.
In all seriousness, none of this could have been done without the support of my family. Especially my mom, who faithfully makes one of our flavors every market and has been a constant help. Her unwavering support and encouragement is appreciated more than she’ll ever know. My husband and daughter are such great sports - dealing with jars of treats all over the dining room table and a constant trail of flour in the kitchen. My sister, who instantly believed “we can do this” bought my Kitchen Aide mixer and the booth sign to get things up and running. I could go on and on with thanking folks! It takes a village to get a small business going.
Owning a successful small business for ten years is no easy feat. But I wouldn’t change a thing. While sometimes I get weary, seeing my regular customers, who in so many instances have become friends, makes it all worthwhile. Thank you. Thank you for supporting a girl boss. Thank you for shopping local. Thank you for trusting me to make the best treats for your fur-friends.
I hope everyone has a great holiday season. We’ll be looking forward to seeing all of your smiling faces in the Spring.
OXOXO Amanda
PS – Don’t forget to refrigerate your treats! 😊
