The whole crew gets exercised daily then drinks some protein—I like the added protein drink because it not only gives their body extra amino acids but also is another source of hydration. Even our nearly 11 year old pup is included in the routine! After they all get exercised and drink their protein they all get their daily grooming.

During all of this, I enjoy blazing through different podcasts! Recently finished The Dropout (about Elizabeth Holmes) and working through Murdaugh Murders Podcast, which showcases phenomenal investigative journalism.

Taking care of your dogs physically IS a critical part of training a dog and maintaining a good relationship with them.

Priorities!

We barely unpacked additional, human necessities as we settle in to the new house...but I made sure to get the dog equipment working!

Today was very cold, windy, and gray, so Maxie got her daily workout in via the dogPACER Treadmill.

We don’t even have a working light or heat in the garage at this point. 😂

Absolutely LOVE being able to exercise dogs off-leash. When you see how fast their preferred pace is and how long they can maintain it...you realize how woefully inactive and under exercised the average pet dog is.

Maxie is a fully-grown, healthy, fit, 4-year-old border collie. We maintained a 12mph pace for nearly 3 miles, then continued at a slower pace after that. She chose to stay on the grass for the majority of the run, which is better for her joints. Always make sure to carefully monitor your dog’s exercise and match it to their age, growth status, and capabilities. 🙂

Before anybody asks, I’m riding besides her on my Onewheel Pint. 🙂

INTRODUCING CONFLICT

In this video, I stepped away from the klack-klack and asked for the heel behavior. The conflict presented to the dog:

▪️ HEEL = JUMP ON KLACK-KLACK?

▪️ HEEL = POSITION NEXT TO LEG?

You can see the moment I gave the command, there was a moment of hesitation. First she went for the klack-klack, didn’t receive the marker, then tried my leg...reward!

Next step is to ACTIVATE the behavior with R- to round out the NePoPo® learning pyramid.

Aaaaannnnddd we have a DOZEN! 🔥🙌🏻. Now I need to break back down into chunks and straighten them out.

For everybody asking, we started with the 2 x 2 method and have built from there. Now we are wandering into my own method, stemming from Dan Coyle’s book, Talent Code.

In order to build speed and maintain accuracy, we need to practice in chunks, then string it back together and the result should be much prettier than what you’re looking at right now.

The goal of dog training should always be an ACTIVE dog and a REACTIVE handler.

You dog should push you for the reward and “hunt” for the right answer. Notice in this video I do absolutely nothing except give a verbal reward marker and toss a ball. 99% of the work is generated by Maxie.

If you find yourself “cheerleading” too much during training:

▪️ The dog may not understand where their advantage lies

▪️ The dog may not value the advantage you have presented (reinforcement value is low)

▪️ The dog may not be physically ready to train (in pain, not feeling well, etc)

▪️ The dog may not yet be stable/comfortable in the environment you are working in

▪️ The dog may not have learned to be creative and active

Always try to set your training up to empower the dog and teach THEM to push YOU for the reward, in a system you’ve manipulated.

🐕🐾 ARE YOU FEEDING YOUR DOG’S CELLS? 🥩🍗🥦

This picture is the most detailed image of a human cell to date, created by a combination of x-ray, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and cryoelectron microscopy imaging.

The cell of a canine looks very similar to a human's and contains the same major structures, including a cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, vacuoles, mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, and endoplasmic reticulum.

The cell is at the center of every process that occurs in a dog's body--it holds the dog's DNA in its center, is responsible for growth, reproduction, energy production, and metabolic reactions.

When you look at this image, I hope what comes to mind is the beautiful COMPLEXITY of its structure! The cell is like a city that, when fueled properly, works like a harmonious machine to allow your dog to live a long, healthy, happy, active life.

But in order to run properly, it needs to be FUELED with fresh, dense nutrition! When a body is starved of the nutrition it requires, it starves the cells of what it needs to run properly and will impact nearly every major function of the dog's body in some way.

🤔 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY 🧐

INGREDIENTS VS. MARKETING

All four of the formulas posted here are marketed as supporting GASTROINTESTINALAL HEALTH in canines...yet they each contain low-quality, ultra-processed ingredients with NO clinical data to support their claims. With such similar health-promoting claims and similar ingredients...why are they marketed so differently? Why is there such a drastic price range? Why are some labeled as a prescription formula? And why are formulas intended for gastrointestinal health including some of the most low-quality ingredients possible?

Let's take a closer look at the facts...

▪️ One of these formulas cost $101 for a 30lb bag, another costs only $33 (with the other two being in the middle).

▪️ All formulas are certified as "complete and balanced" by AAFCO (association of American Feed Control Officials).

▪️ Three formulas contain nearly identical ingredients, with one formula being wildly different, animal-protein free, and yet still maintaining it supports gastrointestinal health.

▪️ One formula requires a prescription from a veterinarian to purchase.

▪️ The carbohydrate content for each formula is 41%-46%. Remember, the largest study ever completed on feral dogs showed they only chose to eat 3% carbohydrates, despite that nutrient being the most widely-available to them.)

▪️ Three formulas contain "brewers rice" in their top five ingredients--a cheap, low-quality grain leftover after milling rice. These same formulas ALSO contain chicken, the ingredient most widely regarded as CAUSING gastrointestinal upset and skin issues in the modern dog.

▪️ Two formulas are made by the same company...the most and least expensive bags.

▪️ NONE of these formulas have clinical data to directly support their specialized nutritional claims.

New project: Prepare Maxie to compete in agility using the new NePoPo® system.

Step 1: Let the dog figure it out. Remember: when the dog is rewarded for their own ideas, it builds creativity, critical-thinking, independence, and buy-in for those behaviors!

Maxie is being rewarded by the treat & train when traveling through the weave poles in one direction, and by the clicker and for when traveling the other direction. The requirements for a reward right now is twofold:

1) Pass through the first pole on the RIGHT side

2) Show intent to travel through the rest of the poles

Excited to watch this development obstacle by obstacle, then by stringing then together!

NePoPo® is a lifestyle, not just a training system.

Aslan’s motivation was low for a “hold” behavior, so I went back to positive reinforcement and gave him a “jackpot” reward—his dinner.

After two jackpots meals, two days in a row, he now reaches for the “hold” object presented, which he did not do before.

If he had not taken the object immediately, I planned to withhold the meal and try again at his next meal.

But his motivation increased with a context he understood, so now I’ll use this context to also increase duration a bit.

The goal is always: behavior on cue WITH heart and soul. I didn’t feel the heart and soul prior so I wanted to readjust and address. Now I like what I see much more. ❤️
