🐴 DID YOU KNOW… here at Florida Rescue Ranch our barefoot farrier, Wendy Jordan Apf-i, comes every two weeks to trim horses feet?

Are you asking yourself what is a barefoot farrier and what is the benefit of barefoot trimming?

Well at Florida Rescue Ranch, we believe in giving every animal the best chance to thrive — and that starts from the ground up. Literally.

A “Barefoot Farrier” is a farrier who specializes in trimming horses' hooves without using metal horseshoes, focusing on a trim that supports the horse's natural hoof form and function.

Here are some fun facts about barefoot trimming:

🐴Nature Knows Best – Horses in the wild don’t wear shoes. Barefoot trimming mimics the natural wear patterns of free-roaming horses.

🐴Healthier Hoof Structure – A properly trimmed barefoot hoof promotes stronger soles, healthier frogs, and better wall integrity.

🐴Improved Circulation – Without metal shoes, the hoof can flex more naturally, encouraging healthy blood flow and overall limb health.

🐴Better Balance – Barefoot horses tend to develop improved posture and body alignment thanks to natural hoof function.

🐴Less Concussion, More Shock Absorption – A barefoot hoof absorbs impact better, protecting joints, tendons, and ligaments.

🐴More Traction, Not Less – Barefoot horses can grip various terrain more efficiently due to their natural hoof textures — even in mud or on rocky trails.

🐴Fewer Hoof Infections – Without the nail holes and crevices that shoes can create, there’s less opportunity for bacteria to invade.

🐴Early Problem Detection – Regular barefoot trims allow farriers to spot and address imbalances or weaknesses before they become serious.

🐴No Nails, No Damage – Nailing on shoes can weaken the hoof wall over time. Barefoot keeps the structure intact and strong.

🐴Encourages Natural Movement – Hooves trimmed to a natural shape support better stride, self-cleaning mechanisms, and movement efficiency.

🐴Supports Rehab and Recovery – Barefoot trimming has been shown to help horses recover from laminitis, navicular issues, and hoof abscesses more naturally.

🐴Less Maintenance Costs – While trimming is still essential, barefoot horses don’t require costly shoeing every few weeks.

🐴Your Horse Feels More – And that’s a good thing! Sensory feedback through the hoof helps horses navigate terrain safely and confidently.

🐴Better for the Environment – No discarded metal shoes, fewer manufacturing resources — just nature doing its job.

🐴Every Hoof is Unique – Barefoot trimming is not one-size-fits-all. Each trim is tailored to the horse’s individual hoof structure, lifestyle, and movement patterns.

👉 Remember: Transitioning to barefoot requires time, patience, and a skilled farrier. But for many horses, it’s the most natural and healing path forward.

At Florida Rescue Ranch, barefoot trimming isn’t just a method — it’s a commitment to wellness from the ground up. 💚.

A HUGE thanks to Wendy Jordan Hoof Care for keeping our equines, here at Florida Rescue Ranch, Healthy and Sound. She helps them feel their best in every stage of their life🙏🙏🙏❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹.

🐴💛 Donkey Kong – Our Smiling Superstar! 💛🐴

This past Sunday, something truly magical happened at Florida Rescue Ranch and Sanctuary… and his name is Donkey Kong — our sweet little mini donkey with the biggest heart (and now, the biggest smile too!).

Through patience and positive reinforcement training, Donkey Kong learned how to smile — not just with his lips, but with his whole spirit. 🥹💫 And at the Vero Beach Moose Lodge 1822 event for on Sunday, he shared that joy with everyone he met.

Watching the kids light up as Donkey Kong flashed his silly, happy grin was unforgettable. Laughter filled the air, little hands reached out to pet him, and hearts—young and old—were completely melted. ❤️

Donkey Kong reminded us all that even the smallest souls can make the biggest impact.
Donkey Kong has been here since the beginning bringing joy to many and helping with horses in need.

To all who visited, smiled back, and shared the love—you helped make his day just as special as he made yours.

Keep smiling, friends. Donkey Kong sure will. 😊

☀️GRATITUDE LIVES IN THE SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE

At Florida Rescue Ranch, we’re surrounded by so many reminders that even the smallest joys can light up the darkest days.

Today I woke up with some serious back pain. I am not sure if I mentioned this but a year ago I could not walk for almost 2 months. It was a tough time but I was concentrating on saving and healing animals and only those that visited saw my pain! What I did learn is I needed to spend some time helping myself but also living in gratitude for everything around me at that moment instead of thinking and being a victim of my pain! Today as some of the pain flared up I remembered that and had gratitude for my amazing body that can do so many things in this line of work. We tend to forget about the simple things in life until they are not simple anymore!

Just like in these animals everyday we enjoy and recognize how precious life is through watching them heal…
A soft nuzzle from a rescued horse…
a tail wag from a dog who once knew only fear… a gentle bray from a donkey who’s found safety at last.
These are the little moments that remind us: gratitude lives in the simple things.🙏

Life isn’t always easy, but when we shift our hearts to focus on what we do have — the love of our animals, the support of each other, the hope that each day brings — we discover just how much beauty surrounds us.

To our incredible supporters: thank you. Because of you, healing happens. Because of you, second chances are possible. You help us focus on the good — and we hope today, you do the same for yourself.

✨ Take a deep breath. Hug your animal a little tighter. Smile at the sunshine.
There is so much to be grateful for. 💛

🫏 10 Fascinating Facts About Donkeys You Might Not Know!

Donkeys are more than just adorable faces and long ears—they’re intelligent, resilient, and full of surprises!

🫏 Donkeys are part of the horse Family called Equine. Which also includes Zebra.

🫏 Donkeys are incredibly smart. They have excellent memories and can recognize areas and other donkeys they haven’t seen in 25 years.

🫏 They’re cautious, not stubborn. What looks like stubbornness is often a donkey pausing to assess a situation for safety.

🫏 Donkeys form deep bonds. They become emotionally attached to companions—both donkey and human!

🫏 Donkey ears aren’t just cute—they’re powerful. Their ears help them regulate body temperature and hear calls from up to 60 miles away in the desert.

🫏 They’re excellent guard animals. Donkeys will protect livestock like sheep or goats from predators.

🫏 Donkeys require different care than horses. Their hooves, diets, and social needs are unique—no one-size-fits-all here.

🫏 They have a calming presence. Known for their steady, gentle nature, donkeys are often used in therapy programs.

🫏 Donkeys can live into their 30s or even 40s. With proper care, they enjoy long, healthy lives.

🫏 Every donkey is an individual. With distinct personalities, some are playful, others reserved—but all are worthy of love and respect.

❤️At Florida Rescue Ranch and Sanctuary, we’re proud to give donkeys the individual care, companionship, healing and LOVE they deserve!

❤️‍🩹Through the Hard Days, WE KEEP SMILING ❤️‍🩹

Animal rescue isn’t easy.
It’s raw. It’s emotional. It’s filled with heartbreak and tough choices. There are days when the pain of what these animals have endured feels overwhelming.

But in the midst of those hard moments here at Florida Rescue Ranch, We choose to focus on the light. ✨
We concentrate on the healing.
On the wag of a once-broken tail.
On the first steps of a once-neglected hoof.
On the soft eyes of a soul that finally feels safe.🙏

Because that is what keeps us going—the promise of a beautiful life ahead for every animal that finds their way to us. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

“Even in the darkest storms, NEVER FORGET TO SMILE—because you’re the sunshine someone is waiting for.” ☀️

To our supporters, volunteers, and fellow animal lovers: thank you for standing beside us in both the struggles and the triumphs. Together, we are building brighter futures—one healing heart at a time.

ENJOY YOUR DAY AND DONT FORGET TO SMILE😊

At Florida Rescue Ranch and Sanctuary, every day is full of hard work, healing, and heart—but on Thursdays, we pause to reflect on just how much we have to be THANKFUL for. 💛

Today, we want to give a huge, heartfelt THANK YOU to some of the people who make our DailyTasks possible:

🫶 Our employees – You are the soul of this sanctuary. Your compassion, dedication, and daily care provide love and dignity to every animal here. Thank you for showing up rain or shine, and for giving your all to those who cannot speak for themselves.

🫶Our amazing volunteers – Your time is the most selfless gift of all. Whether you're mucking stalls, grooming animals, or just sitting quietly beside a scared animal, your presence changes lives. We couldn’t do it without your hearts and helping hands.

🫶 And to our Angel Donor – Words will never be enough. Because of your generosity, our staff is supported, our doors stay open, and our animals continue to heal. You are the quiet hero behind every second chance we give.

Together, we are creating a place where hope lives, healing begins, and love never runs out. 💕🐴🐐🐶

Did you know every herd has a horse herd leader? The herd dynamics are so interesting and a herd leader can change when you add or take a horse from the herd! We have seen the changes over the years in this particular herd.

This herd currently has 7 horses, 2 donkeys and 5 cows. We do change up where the donkeys and cows go and sometimes the herd of horses change.

The herd usually sticks together sometimes there will be buddies of two and three but they all graze together in certain areas of the pasture.

Can you guess which horse is the herd leader in this picture??

Wishing everyone an awesome day today!!!
