Oh the magical rumen!

If you’ve missed some of the posts from today go back and check them out! Laura Daniels here taking over the page to bring you some views from Heartwood Farm.

When you look at this picture of cattle in a rolling pasture, what do you see?

Maybe you notice the cute calves with their speckled faces? Maybe you see a peaceful oak savannah? Or maybe just the vibrant color draws your attention?
What do I see? One of the most sustainable way to produce nutritious food. It is simple, cows eat grass. People don’t. This beautiful place was made to grow grass. Lots of grass, we can’t grow carrots or green beans and many other nutritious foods here. Managing these pastures to protect the water and grow lush grass that is harvested by those big beautiful mama cows is my idea of sustainability.
Before I was a farmer I was a cattle nutritionist and I have always been amazed by the rumen (yes, I am that nerdy). As you probably know it is one of the compartments of the cow’s stomach. It is the reason cows chew their cud. The rumen is the reason the cow can break down all the fiber in the grass she eats. That rumen makes cattle (or buffalo) an essential part of a grassland ecosystem. Cool right!

So proud to be conservation farmers here at Heartwood Farm.

Hey everyone Laura Daniels here today I'm taking over the Wisconsin Beef Council page. Follow along!

Protecting this incredible natural resource, surface water, is truly one of our missions here at Heartwood Farm. There are many things that we do both big and small to keep this stream and water that flows through our farm and our fields clean. The grass in our pasture is like a big filter that captures soil particles before the water reaches the stream. All that grass also absorbs a tremendous amount of rain, reducing erosion after a storm. This is important because the headwaters of the Blue River a popular trout stream start on our farm. Conservation Farmer is a title we take pride in here at Heartwood Farm.

This little baby grew up to be quite a nice cow, she sold in our sale to Mullikin Meadows. Her name is now Wilma, she has a great home and a family that loves her. My heart is so happy! However, I am sad to report that as she grew she lost that cute little "smile!"

This will always be one of my favorites!❤

It was -17° this morning and Thursday night our dairy barn collapsed in the storm.

It was empty.

Today is the first day I am glad I am not a dairy farmer. There I said it. 79 days after we sold our dairy herd. I will continue to miss the cows, but today, I am grateful we are beef farmers.

My last video was the night before our sale and it was raw, honest and kinda sad. This video helps you know I am ok, and full of gratitude.

Our last Classification today was truly a celebration of good Jersey cows. We never set out to breed Excellent cows, we set out to breed the kind of cows I like, good udders, good components, and most importantly trouble free cows that last.

Today we gained 2 new EX-93 cows. Wow. I just felt so grateful for the chance to do this amazing work and to know I did it well. There are 10 EX cows in our herd today. Just as important are the 5 new VG 2 year olds.

Lots of pics to come, attached are a few of my favorites in line waiting for the classifier. ❤

(In the video are lots, 2410 VG-85, 1241 GP-82, 2424 VG-87, 2287 GP-84, 2295 VG-86)

This beautiful cow is "Brandy" lot 2212 and she sells in the Heartwood Complete Herd Dispersal on November 19th, here at our farm in Cobb, WI.

I wish I could bottle this scene and this early August evening. Whenever I need to relax and rest easy I would pop the lid off and absorb the calming sound of my favorite cow Brandy munching grass and see the barn swallows sweeping gracefully over our beautiful summer pastures. And while I'd know it isn't true, for just a few minutes it would seem all is right in the world.

It's time to turn the page.

How does it end? That’s what we all want to know right? A good book, movie, the story of your life. Better yet, the dream you’re chasing. When we get to the end, how are we going to feel? Was it worth it?

We are at the end of a dream at Heartwood Farm. With all optimism and gratitude, we are announcing the complete dispersal of our beautiful herd of Jersey cows. The "Live Your Dream" Heartwood Farm Complete Herd Dispersal will be here at the farm in Cobb, Wisconsin, on November 19th. For more detail on the sale and to order a catalog click link below. We will host Open Houses to view the herd on October 16th and November 14th.

We took the risk and while it was not easy, it was worth it. We spent the past 15 years teaching Nathan and Julia how to care for our people, cattle and land with gentleness as we produced food to feed people we will never know. Our kids are our best crop. They watched us and worked with us as we went for it. We are so proud of who they have become. Now, Jarred and I turn our focus to chasing new dreams together. Just like we did with our Jerseys, we plan to build a herd of beef cows that fit our goals, and suit our land and customers.

This isn’t sad. We feel proud. It’s the close of a chapter on our terms. Heartwood Farm has always been my dream. My crazy, stupid, dream. This grand experiment has been a success. I love these cows and I absolutely love my job. Just because you love your work, and even if you are good at it, doesn't mean you should do it forever. I'm ready to write the next chapter.

How lucky are we that we got to live our dream? Very. No regrets, only gratitude. How does our story end? We don't know because this book is far from over. We hope our story especially with this plot twist, causes you to think about your own. What's your next chapter? How will your story end? Chase your dream and find out. It will be worth it.

Thanks to Wkow Channel 27 and Sam for stopping at our farm this week! Always great to talk about our cows, our community, delicious Wisconsin Cheese and Dairy Girl Network!

June is National Dairy Month and although the month is coming to an end, the time is always right to celebrate our local dairy farmers. Laura Daniels from Heartwood Farm joined us to share how their dairy impacts the community and how you can support local farmers.

We had a very special visitor to the farm yesterday. Oh how we wish every farmer could see the care and concern in our Governor's eyes. He is spending more time on farm and talking to farmers as he seeks solutions to keep the Wisconsin Dairy Economy strong.

Thank you Governor Tony Evers, for your interest and the action we feel confident you will take.
