Will you look at this?? It’s a little bit of ✨ new growth✨ on one of our axolotl’s tail! The tip of it’s tail got damaged about 5 weeks ago and lo and behold, there is some beautiful regeneration. Did you know that axolotls have regenerative properties and can re grow many parts of their bodies? These creatures are amazing 🤩

How do you know if your wild is actually a Starburst? Starburst is not really a morph but a genetic trait that is very desirable. These axolotls have high and larger patches of iridaphores all throughout their body that becomes more prominent with age. Many wilds have iridaphores when they are younger but lose their sparkly sheen as they become adults. Jupiter was bred and raised here at Alotl Dreams and is certainly near and dear to my heart 💖

Let’s talk worms! Axolotls like all types of food but they definitely love worms! Here is a quick reference to the 2 main types of worms you can purchase. On the left is the red wiggler and on the right is a night crawler. Night crawlers are red wigglers larger cousin. They are pretty similar except, as you can see, their size. Red wigglers are approximately 3-5 inches while the night crawler is between 3-8! There are other differences that pertain to composting but in regards to food, either one of these guys will do the job. Typically, we will feed juveniles and sub adults a few red wigglers while fully mature Axolotls will receive night crawlers. You can always mix and match. Variety is key when it comes to health and sustainability of your pet!

Part 2 of spring cleaning the HOB filter. Not only does the filter need cleaning, the sponge does, too! I do this more often because it sifts all the gunk from the tank. I clean the sponge in dirty tank water so I can keep the beneficial bacteria alive! Look how dirty that water is after I’m done. If you notice the filter isn’t working very well, it might be a good idea to take it apart and give it a good clean.
