Many puppy mills operate unregulated and treat their animals in an inhumane way by forcing them to live in confined spaces, lack interaction, and not giving them proper veterinary care. Introducing legislation that would require all puppy mills to adhere to a code of conduct, such as requiring an annual veterinary exam of all dogs or limiting the capacity of dogs in puppy mills, would take great strides in improving the quality of life dogs in puppy mills have. Puppy mills across the United States currently operate according to state laws and not federal legislation, which causes there to be a great difference in the way mills treat their animals in different states. The map below demonstrates the range of care that puppy mills in different states provide. The map supports the claim that most puppy mills operate without any regulations.

Puppy mills are horrible corporations that mass-produce dogs. Many people unknowingly support puppy mills by buying a dog from a pet store because 90% of dogs in pet stores come from puppy mills. These facilities produce approximately 4.3 million dogs every year and many of these dogs develop behavioral or health complications due to the poor breeding practices that are implemented at these mills. The video below describes some of the harsh realities that many people are unaware of about puppy mills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVyFSTYY7zg

Without spaying and neutering, dogs reproduce at a rapid rate! A singular female dog can have an average of 8 puppies per litter and can have 2 litters per year. It can be assumed that half the litter is male and half the litter is female. Female dogs can begin to reproduce after they go through heat for the first time at 6-7 months of age. As demonstrated in the graph below, if multiple spayed and unneutered dogs are in an area, they will reproduce at an uncontrolled rate. This rapid reproduction could be avoided if dogs were simply spayed or neutered in the beginning before this problem gets out of control.

The best way to combat accidental dog pregnancies is simply to spay or neuter your dogs. It is important to take proper care of your animals. When spaying and neutering are not implemented, the number of puppies can get out of control. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17PNC-hoKJc

When dog pregnancies occur accidentally, most owners do not even know the breed of both of the parents of the puppies. Remember seeing the ad in the paper for the adorable litter of puppies? Well more likely than not, it is likely that these puppies are the result of an accidental dog pregnancy.

27/02/2021

Accidental dog pregnancies also play a large role in increasing dog populations. When dogs become accidentally pregnant, there is commonly not an intended home for the puppies to go to. This leads to dog owners being so worried about finding a home for the puppies that they do not truly know if the dogs are going to a responsible home. This can lead to dogs being mistreated, malnourished, and potentially abused because people are not having to be held accountable for their actions.

Animal shelters are not able to support an unlimited amount of animals. An animal shelter in Independence County, Arkansas is an example in which a lack of funding is putting a strict limit on the animals the shelter can help. If animals do not get adopted, euthanasia is commonly turned to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ7KUtXM8As

Lack of funds and an influx of stray dogs have left several Arkansas towns at a loss... some even worrying about closing their only shelter.

In the United States, there are approximately 70 million stray dogs and cats, but sadly only about 6-8 million animals enter shelters annually. The rest of these animals have to fight to stay alive every day. Even the lives of the animals that enter shelters are uncertain because only about half of them get adopted. The rest of the animals in the shelter, unfortunately, have to be euthanized due to a lack of resources. Stray animals have to face a lose-lose situation with little hope of finding their own family.

Puppy mills greatly contribute to the dog overpopulation crisis by adding more dogs to an already abundant population. Dogs in these facilities have to deal with inhumane living conditions, lack of socialization, and poor veterinary care. These animals live a life that is unfair to them and they do not deserve to be treated this way!

A dog is supposed to be man's best friend, and yet 3-4 million dogs are being euthanized every year. This translates to approximately 10,000 dogs being euthanized every day.
