The need for dog trainers to continue to educate.

I was on a breed group this morning where someone asked a question about puppies biting. The advice ranged from giving them a frozen soaked cloth to timeouts and telling them "no, until they learned."

Although we have made lots of progress, we still have much work to do. The Internet has seen an explosion in the ability to get information to majt people but often that's the wrong information (look at what your Aunt Doris or Uncle Fred had to say about things during the pandemic because of ridiculous nonsense they saw on social media and elsewhere online).

I get why people are confused. A dog trainer is a dog trainer, right? No. The industry is unregulated globally, so anyone can set up as a trainer. Furthermore, even some of the big companies don't always offer excellent education because they are concerned about £££$$$ above lots of other factors.

Even showing by example isn't enough as people don't understand the process for the learner (look at the barbaric and abusive practices of Supenanny TV show, even though results happened without hitting or shouting).

My response in the dog group was -

"I'm a professional trainer, 17 years experience.

Puppies biting is very similar to infants/babies crying - they need something. Moat puppies bite when they have one of their primary needs taken care of - they are hungry, thirsty, tired or need the toilet. When pup is biting, these are the first things to think of and address.

There's a common and well held misconception that puppies bite because their mouths are sore (this is only one of many reasons they do and is well down the list). Babies don't cry because they want to hear their own voice and puppies don't bite because they want something in their mouths, so a wet/frozen rag isn't usually going to meet the need of the biting behaviours.

Like children, puppies can't emotionally regulate until later so yelling them "no" doesn't work. Meet their needs and teach them how to ask for them to be met with patience over time.

Playing with the puppy when biting often makes them more tired, more hungry, hotter, more thirsty, more irritable etc which leads to more biting.

The problem we have is that sometimes they do want to play so they bite, so running through the checklist first is better.

When we don't understand this, we resort to timeouts, chastising, scruffing, saying no (at increasing volumes) and physical corrections. All if which are unnecessary.

Addressing hunger, thirst, fatigue and toileting should be our go to. Keeping a diary, noting times and what else is going on will help."

We hired an agility field and had so much fun with the pups even though it was raining heavily! Maya preferred to jump on top of the tunnels instead of going inside as there was lots of mud bless her 😂
The pups were asleep for the rest of the day.
I also managed to snap this amazing sunrise picture whilst on a morning walk with Inka ☀️

Our furry babies have been eating mostly raw for more than 14 months now. We tried Prodog complete raw and Marsey raw but now it's time to try a local company so we bought Dougie’s from their shop in Boroughbridge.

We're 4 weeks old now🥰

There are 2 girls and 4 boys. Both of the parents are KC registered and health tested. The puppies will of course be KC registered as well.

There are:
2 true hairless boys
1 hairy hairless girl
1 powderpuff girl
2 powderpuff boys

♀️Dam: CHERY CHERY LADY

♂️Sire: FARADENZA WINNING SMILE

The pups are reared inside our house so will be used to all household noises. They're also brought up around other dogs, people and children.

Puppies will come with:
- lifetime of support and advice
- KC registration papers
- will be microchipped and dewormed
- will have their first injections

Ready to leave June 11th.

All of the puppies went to their new, loving homes so we're down to 4 dogs now, which feels like it's not enough 😂 I'll miss them but I know they'll have a wonderful life!
Also Lilly got a new pony haircut so she's warning a warm vest🐎🥰
