Alfie called me with an update on Tina. The family loves her and she is loving them back! Alfie is full of joy. I imagine 200 acres of prime farm land is a paradise, especially when it is located on the Grand River! Swim Tina, swim.

Leash training.

TEACH THE DOG, DON"T TEST THE DOG

don't set the pup up for failure by trying to do this on a sidewalk where there are a million things going on, that is a test.
Start in the house, this is teaching. Have the leash in your hand and attached to the pup. With his/her food in hand, toss a kibble or two across the floor. let pup go get it, chew it, when they are finished apply light leash pressure towards you calling the pup by name. When pup returns all the way to you reward with food. Teach one thing at a time, so don't ask for a sit or down when they come back, You are teaching a response to leash pressure, which is come when called. This will translate into off leash recall if you repeat it is one or two thousand times.
To teach this, only do it for 4-6 minutes at this age, You can increase the repetitions as they get a little older but keep it under 10 minutes even as an adult.
If you take the time NOW, it will make life so much easier in a month or two.

After doing this for a week or so in the house, take it to the yard, This adds a few more distractions to the mix. What they know in the house will not be perfect in the yard. Start and teach it all over again.

Then take it to the driveway, this adds a few more distractions. Teach it all over again. By this time it should be automatic.

They take it to the park or a busier area. Don't assume it will be perfect each and every time. Hell, even my 4 year old blew me off on Sunday morning, and his recall is Fabulous, but something smelled better than ............... mom calling, and wasted $75 entry fee for the Master hunt test!!! 🤣
In the end he is only a dog and dogs do dog things!!

You will fail each and every time if you start your pup on a sidewalk, and trying to get them to pay attention and walk at your side. Don't test them, teach them. A LOT less frustration on your part.

NO DOG PARKS.
Ask me why

04/08/2020

Socialization is NOT meeting other dogs. Carry on people.

unless of course you want your DOG to always run to the end of the leash wagging their tails happy to meet EVERY SINGLE dog pulling you off your feet or jerking your arm out of your shoulder for every dog.

Unless you know that dog really really well, and even then keep strict supervision and limit the time. Don't let them meet it. You don't know HOW the other dog will react when your cute puppy runs up and start submissively licking it. If you are walking and another dog runs up to the pup barking, walk to the other side of the street, walk up a ways into a driveway, just get out of the other dogs way until they pass. If your pup hides behind your legs, fine, let those noisy untrained dogs pass and then go on your merry way.

Just arrived home and for some reason could not see a lot of responses on my phone that are showing up on the laptop.

Lets talk about Reuben's "fear" The reaction of fear is one scared puppy that does NOT snap out of the startle quickly. Small yappy puppies scare the crap out of me too, as most times those are the little buggers that bite me!
If Reuben shows a startle response to sudden loud noise or a fast moving object, that reaction of acceptable IF he bounces back to normal mode within a short period of time.
An example of a true fear stage is, you are taking him outside and he hesitates at the door, so you gently shove his ass out the door to go potty and he runs for a corner shaking and crying. Because for some reason the normal is not longer safe. That is a true fear stage.

To be honest, 2 small little yappy sh*tzu's running up to me would make me run if I was Reuben's size, that is wise self preservation.
I hesitate to suggest, when he startles that he should be picked up to cuddle. This reinforces the reaction he just exhibited. If it was me and he ran close to me to get away from yappy shark teeth, I would just say, let's go and keep moving. Making a fuss over a 'hiding' reaction to loud sudden noises teaches the pup to react that way in future situations.

The Saturday of our hunt test was successful!
Winter got the big one on the end for a title of Junior Hunter!! Yeah Winter. Today she moves up to the senior level and she can have her first go at it. All I got was a pie in the face! Well, whip cream pie. I ate a good portion and Archer picked off the rest. Today, we shall try again.

No puppy pictures this morning. I’m in Quebec with the big dogs for a hunt test. The pups went to summer camp at the farm with their mother and my mother. I think she may be slightly frazzled by Tuesday 🤣🤣🤣
