2024 Solar Eclipse Pet Safety

Just a friendly reminder - during a solar eclipse, it's a good idea to keep your furry friends indoors. The sun's rays can be harmful to their eyes, and the sudden change in light might spook them. Many pets react to eclipses just like they do to fireworks or thunderstorms.

Temperatures are dropping in Northern NJ this week and while we know coat type, age, weight and whether your dog is conditioned to these temperatures are all factors to how your pup responds to the cold, we want everyone to be educated & safe!

Just like humans, dogs can get frostbite too. They are at risk once the temperature falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit & may start developing frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.

Signs of Frostbite: 🥶
•Pain/tenderness when touched
•Stiffness or clumsiness
•Discoloration of the affected area. (Often pale, gray or bluish)
•Blisters and swelling in the affected area
•Areas of blackened or dead skin

While frostbite is usually not life-threatening for dogs, it is often followed by Hypothermia- which can be fatal.
DO NOT:
•Rub or massage the affected area
•Use direct dry heat like a heating pad or hair dryer.

⚠️If your dog is exhibiting signs of frostbite or hypothermia- move them to a dry, warm area as quickly as possible and contact your veterinarian immediately.⚠️

Who better to put in charge of quality assurance than a shelter pup?! 🦃🦃

Our pups are looking to spend their Thanksgiving holiday in a home where they can enjoy the doggy safe goodies and the festivities! We have so many amazing dogs that promise to be wonderful house guests! Did you know that short breaks from the shelter greatly increases adoptability in shelter animals? These breaks give them time to relax and decompress allowing them to show their best self to potential adopters. It is so crucial for their well-being and so rewarding for their foster families as well! ❤️
