How often people rely on tools, e-collars, treats and commands to communicate with their dogs when in reality their greatest asset is their energy and body. I try hard to convey this message to clients and believe me- talking to the dogs was a HARD habit to break. I encourage people to try for the first two hours in the morning- do your entire routine without talking to your dog at all- do it without words and notice any differences. You might find they are way MORE in tune with you now that you are all speaking the same language. This is possible with my pack because I have established leadership, it is the same reason they will hike behind me calmly and look to me for guidance. Being the leader for these dogs is both a privilege and a responsibility, and I owed it to them to learn their language and use it more often than my own.

I really love Pack Walk Days! New humans and dogs come out at every one. Dogs go from being initially excited to calm and neutral and it is beautiful to watch. Follower Mode: for your dog, The physical position of follower on the walk helps nurture the default mindset to become that of a follower all the time. If what the walk looks like is just a snap shot of what the whole big picture looks like, then to have a dog who willingly wants to follow you and be near you, on or off leash, it all starts at home with Rules, structure & routines. You have to do the hard stuff first and early in order to get that awesome and easy freedom filled later. My favorite question: WOULD YOU FOLLOW YOU? If your dog is having trouble settling down and trusting you to be in charge, don’t blame them or the tool- ask yourself “How can I be a better leader for them?” See if you can somehow provide more guidance for them to make better decisions. We are the biggest factors in our dogs behavior. Before you get frustrated, take a deep breath and check yourself, find your calm and be very clear and calm in how you are communicating to them. If you want a follower, you must first be a leader worth following.

Completing the @packleaderuniversity Dog Psychology blueprint kick started an amazing journey into bettering us as a whole operation- from the inside out. Launching the Community Pack Walks and getting involved with @lighthouseanimalshelter.ma really allowed us to connect with fellow dog people and it has been more rewarding than I ever imagined. Going out to Idaho to learn from Stephanie and her incredible team at @methodk9 provided the experience needed to start offering Training services- confidently. Relevance. Off leash training starts on leash. On leash walking needs to look good before off leash walking will be safe and successful. The walk starts inside the house, controlling the thresholds will set the tone for your entire walk.
