An absolutely stunning angelfish, a pleco, and several tetras were donated to our tank today. I'm guessing I will have to move our tiger barb to the other tank so he won't have a chance to bully the gorgeous angelfish.

We felt we didn't have enough space for this bala shark in our tank, so he's on his way to a local aquarium that has graciously offered to take him! He will be able to live out his days with other freshwater sharks.

He's about 5 or 6 inches now, but these creatures can grow to over a foot long and live for up to 10 years, so you really have to consider the longevity and size that your fish will grow to before purchasing them. A 30 gallon will not be sufficient for long.

This applies to many, many different kinds of fish. Do your research before purchasing any kind of fish. The Petco or PetSmart employee may or may not be giving you the best advice.

This shark came from a very adequate tank, but the rest of his school died and his owner wanted to go another route with his tank. We tend to take in misfit fish, from tanks whose schools have mostly died off and their owners aren't interested in keeping up the hobby. We like seeing these guys with their buddies, so we will happily rehome them to tanks that have the same species of schooling fish.

(By the way, the water is that color because of the tannins from the driftwood feature in the tank. It will eventually stop giving off that color, however it's not harmful to the fish and some fish actually prefer a darker tank because it offers more safety in the form of camoflage).

Our tiger barb (striped) and two tetras, a platty and swordtail. The tiger barb managed to injure himself a while back, I'm still not sure how. So I put him in a hospital tank in my bathroom, and he healed up well. He also seemed to warm up to me a lot, which was really neat to see! He made the transition back to the bigger tank so well (being transferred used to send him into a shock that was painful to watch) and he now is very comfortable coming up to the tank wall to beg for more food (he's a pig!) and feed comfortably while I film him (he used to be terrified and hide). I did not anticipate this transformation, and it's really heartwarming to see.

Different species of tetras will school together, but they will not typically school with other species.

Our most recent rescue was 6 goldfish that were cramped into a 10 gallon tank. If you are not familiar with goldfish, they need at least a 20 gallon aquarium for one fish and an extra 10 gallons for every fish thereafter. You can still add other species of fish.

They are now busy exploring their new 50 gallon tank! They are about 2-2.5 inches long, and will keep growing.

These glittery guys will be available for adoption. You can adopt 1 or all, depending on your tank setup. They can even come with a tank, if you need one. Fishkeeping is a very fun hobby.

Fishkeeping and aquascaping is an extremely rewarding hobby. Fish are relatively low maintenance compared to other pets, but spend enough time with them and you will see some can be quite personable.

We started our small sanctuary due to the number of people who have fish kept in cramped conditions or need to rehome for various reasons. Many people simply are not aware how much space fish need. Many fish also prefer to be in large schools, rather than in small groups. We are here to educate and show people how enjoyable of a hobby fishkeeping can be!
