Socialisation is so critical we get it right from the start
Meeting lots of dogs really shouldn’t be the priority because most of the time it’s just having a detrimental effect on your puppy
Lots of short outings should also be the focus and bear in mind the time spent in the car. That still counts towards the amount of time out and is still a relatively stressful experience for a puppy.
Poor/incorrect socialisation leads to a lot of behavioural problems later on in life
You only get one shot when it comes to socialisation, please get it right.
These 5 items are must for anyone looking to teach the right behaviours and train their puppy/dog the right way
Laying the right foundations is what it’s all about in having a well rounded/mannered dog
Applying it all as early as possible is crucial

Handling exercises are very important and should be done daily with your puppy. You should also get guests to do this too.
Use toys/chews to assist so they’ve got something to bite and chew on
Handling should be something dogs enjoy. They have to be handled by strangers, vets, groomers etc.
This should all be done in that key socialisation window
It only takes several occasions of jumping up and getting reinforcement for problematic behaviour and that’s it your puppy now thinks this is what I do.
Prevention is the key to stopping problematic behaviours such as jumping up, biting, chewing etc
Otherwise the longer you allow these behaviours to play out they are just becoming more ingrained and will be even harder to stop/reverse
If there is a behaviour you don’t like from your puppy then stop allowing it to happen on a daily basis and TEACH them a better alternative

As the saying goes you can’t run before you can walk.
But why do so many of us try?!!!?
No house is built on poor foundations as It will fall down
Is your training built on solid foundations???
If not, then go back to basics and keep working at it
These things don’t happen overnight
Keep going, you’ve got this!!!

Recall is all about keeping it simple, setting our dogs up for success, being consistent and doing the reps!!!💪💪
We must STOP making it far too difficult and expecting great results in environments that are way too distracting and ultimately where we are just setting them up to fail
Don’t expect too much too soon. Recall goes wrong because we’ve had some early success, think we’ve cracked it and then start letting them off the lead. Within 2 weeks we’ve lost any kind of recall we did have and now it’s even harder to get it back.
Recall takes time, patience and many many many months of practice. You’ve got this 🙌🙌

Meeting lots of people & dogs when your out on a walk with your puppy is the worse thing you can do and here’s why:
- Consider the state they are in when this is happening?? More often than not they are way to overexcited, which means this behaviour is being rehearsed every single time this encounter happens and is only ever going to get worse.
- Jumping up, lunging, pulling on the lead, all the wrong behaviours are just being reinforced(rewarded)
- We should be teaching our puppy to be calm in the presence of people & dogs and not behave like a Tasmanian devil 😈
- If our puppy isn’t overexcited and is slightly wary or fearful. Why do we think it necessary to then keep sticking dogs and/or people in our dogs face expecting them to be ok with this?!?!!
They are letting you know they aren’t comfortable by the way they are acting!!!!
- The result of this is a dog that will become reactive and start barking/lunging because it’s fed up with being put in this situation on a daily basis. It’s human parents haven’t had its back in these situations and it now feels it needs to take up a leadership role because there’s been zero leadership from the other end of the lead.
- The lead is another problem with dog on dog meetings. This is such an unnatural occurrence and doesn’t happen in anyway, shape or form or mimic what would go on in the wild. Being on a lead is very restricting and means they cannot get out of the situation if need be, which creates stress. Then throw in another dog in their face(more stress), then a human pulling back on the lead creating tension(more stress) and then times that by 2 as the other dog and owner are pretty much doing exactly the same thing. That’s a lot of stress!!! Is a wonder that all kicks off?!?!
- Not all humans get along. Funnily enough it’s no different in the dog world. Why do want to keep going to meet every single dog in a walk. It’s not normal! The next time you are in a shop, wouldn’t you find
Just don’t do it!!!
It never ends well
Nothing more needs to be said
Here’s 2 simple exercises to do everyday with your puppy.
- We need to be the most important thing in our puppies life
- I would feed all of my puppies food in training sessions and NEVER put it in a bowl on the floor
- Exercise 1 is fantastic for working on a puppy that has already started to jump up at everyone
- The key with both of these exercises is we aren’t asking for anything. We are just rewarding the behaviour when we get it.
- Exercise 2 is how we should start with lead walking and introducing the lead. Far too quickly a puppy is being rewarded for constantly hitting the end of the lead and being away from us. You need to train them to want to remain close but your walks are probably doing the opposite.
- ALWAYS train where you get success. If they are too distracted then make it easier!!
- Short 5-10 mins training sessions, several times a day is what works best
Now get training!!!💪💪😊😊🐶🐶
Get all basics right at home first and perfect your skills there.
Then gradually over the course of many months start introducing more distracting environments.
We need to keep the time to around 10-15 minutes. When you first start going make it early in the morning or later in the evening so it is still relatively quiet.
You MUST be getting success wherever you are training. If they keep failing then STOP going there!!!
Don’t expect too much too soon. It’s you that’s holding your puppies progress back by expecting way too much in the early days
Recall is a crucial part of training our puppies
Here is some simple tips to adhere to:
- keep it simple to begin with. You must set them up for success!
- Make the word come mean something, they don’t understand what it means.
- if you aren’t getting 100% success rate in the garden. They shouldn’t have access to it.
- Come MUST mean come. Not I piss around doing what I want, when I want and then come over when I’m ready.
- Don’t expect too much too soon and don’t let them off the lead too early. It’s a slippery slope if you keep calling them and they are ignoring you as you are just training them to do this.
