Smiths Lake 2019 didn’t disappoint, even with slightly adverse weather conditions not conducive to herping (cool & rainy 23 degrees). Another great weekend with great company...😃🐍🦎

This Is Jonathan, The 187-Year-Old Tortoise Photographed In 1886 And Today

It’s a known fact that humans outlive most animals. But tortoises are definitely an exception, and one of them was actually able to reach the ripe age of 187. Jonathan, a giant tortoise, is currently the oldest living terrestrial animal in the entire world, having hatched back in 1832. The tortois...

“....What they observed was astounding. As a submerged female anole crouched on the river bottom for nearly 10 minutes, a tiny bubble repeatedly expanded and contracted at the top of her head. The lizard appeared to be recycling her air, much as a human diver would draw on oxygen from a tank”

Cameron Siler Lab

Grad student Joey Brown was working in our herpetology collection here at the Sam Noble Museum when he came across some old giant snake skins tucked away on the top shelves. On the left you have a Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus) and on the right a Reticulated Python (Python reticulatus).

Unfortunately there wasn't much data associated with the retic python specimen but it was a complete skin from head to tail and measured about 18.5 ft. It most likely came into our collection in the mid 1900's.

However, we do know the green anaconda was purchased by an OU student (class of 1908) at a shop in Brazil in 1936. He then donated the skin to our collection in 1952. This skin also measured around 18.5 ft but was missing the head and good portion of the body--meaning this snake was easily pushing over 20 ft long. Impressive!

Spent my entire holidays in search of the elusive Thorny Devil. Even going on specific trips around and the spiny little buggers just wouldn’t show there face - even got to the stage where the kids bought me a plastic devil as a joke!!
Then today driving through the after the most amazing day seeing many different animals I came across not one but two of these amazing reptiles!!
What an amazing way to end an amazing holiday!!
