There is only one variety of crocus that produces the saffron spice .

Saffron crocus (Crocus sativus) stands out among various crocus varieties due to its unique role in spice production. While many crocus species contribute to the vibrant display of spring flowers, saffron crocus holds culinary significance. Saffron, derived from the crimson stigmas of its flowers, is a coveted spice known for its distinct flavor, aroma, and golden hue imparted to dishes.

Unlike ornamental crocus varieties primarily cultivated for their blossoms, saffron crocus is valued for its three red stigmas, commonly referred to as saffron threads. This spice has been prized for centuries in various cultures for its culinary, medicinal, and coloring properties.

Other crocus species, such as Crocus vernus or Crocus tommasinianus, contribute to the kaleidoscope of colors in spring gardens but lack the culinary significance of saffron crocus.

In essence, while all crocus varieties contribute to the visual splendor of gardens, saffron crocus stands alone as the source of one of the world's most prized and expensive spices, adding a unique touch to both culinary and cultural landscapes.

I know there’s currently lots of egg talk going on with possible shortages and price increases. What’s going on with the egg companies is truly sad that all those birds have to be destroyed.
I have the egg hook up currently with my girls so have no fear of not finding eggs! $5/dz or $4.50dz for 2 or more dozen!

Did you know that 18 Pesticide Disposal Collection Days are planned across the state to help farmers and homeowners properly dispose of pesticides? "This program is built through a partnership between our Pesticide Disposal Assistance Program and the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service," said N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. "It is a great program because it provides opportunities for farmers and property owners to dispose of unwanted pesticides, keeping them out of our landfills and trash." Getting Started in the Garden - Hardening off and Planting

It's springtime and almost time to put your transplants into the ground, but first we need to prepare them for the elements and conditions they will face. We will discuss the essential step of "hardening off" and proper planting techniques.

The class and demonstration will be held Thursday, April 4, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Graham Public Library, 211 S. Main Street, Graham, NC 27253. This session will be taught by NC Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of Alamance County.

Registration is required for this free event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/getting-started-in-the-garden-hardening-off-and-planting-registration-799890503027

Make a wish. Of all the native herbs that I remember from when I was a kid, dandelion had to be at the top of the list. We blew wishes from the globe of seeds. We held the yellow flower under our chins and if your chin reflected yellow, it meant you liked butter (?!). We rubbed the white latex on scratches. I made dandelion chains to hang from my bike handlebars. Even way back then, dandelion had a lot of uses and we didn't have to read a single book to figure it out. ;-)

Dandelion has many good uses for poultry too. This was another article I wrote for Backyard Poultry magazine. The flowers will be here soon. The bees are waiting too.

Cilantro, anyone?! Cilantro doesn’t like hot weather but I seeded some in my raised bed in my greenhouse back in November and it is thriving! We just turned the heat on in the greenhouse to keep nighttime temperatures up some with seedlings and it has grown massively!

The Redding Roost Greenhouse & Farm

We hope to provide organically grown strawberries to our CSA customers this year! We recently covered them with frost covers to protect them(mostly from deer🤦🏻‍♀️)
I want to provide you a little more info about our CSA!
For the 12 Week CSA, you will pick up your bag of produce at 1168 Ridgeville rd. It comes out to $22.50 a week. You will receive a $25 value of produce. I will have a website set up where you can pick what you want in your bag to add up to $25 or you can choose farmer’s choice and you’re welcome to change from week to week. I will send out a reminder each week to choose what you want.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a production and marketing model whereby consumers buy shares of a farm’s harvest in advance. Consumers become CSA members by paying an agreed amount at the beginning of the growing season, either in one lump sum or in installments. The annual cost depends on the length of the harvest season and the variety and quantity of products provided. This upfront payment helps buy the seed and other inputs needed for the season and provides the farmer an immediate income to begin the season. By paying at the beginning of the season, CSA members share in the risk of production and relieve the farmer of much of the time needed for marketing. This allows the farmer to concentrate on good land stewardship and growing high quality food. As always, I am here for any questions!! Link to sign up! https://forms.gle/fbDSQQs4ctwq9vkC9

Start small.
I know a lot of new people are excited and want to jump right into veggies like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and so on.
Those take a long time to grow and many things can go wrong wasting time, money and energy.
Start with small containers and leafy greens.
This is your ABCs and 123s, your building blocks. Walking before you run. When you get the hang of it, then take off the training wheels and have fun with other stuff.😀🌿🌿

I’ve seen many posts asking about storing empty jars. So I’m sharing the wisdom of my grandmother. She taught me this in the 1960’s and I have been doing this ever since.
These jars are not sealed as this is water. It is clean water that can be used for washing or for consumption. If you are concerned about stored water, remember, IT’S WATER. You can boil it before consuming it. As long as your source is safe, the water should be safe.
These are my ‘empty’ canning jars. If you notice, they aren’t really empty. They are filled with water. My grandmother always said that an empty jar takes up just as much space as a full one. NEVER put an empty jar on the shelf. If you don’t have anything to can or store in it, fill it with clean water. This has come in handy many times. In February 2021, here in Texas, we had a deep freeze. We were without power and water for about a week. We kept warm with a fireplace and blankets. For water, I had my canning jars. Even the small 4oz jelly jars had water in them. The stores were out of bottled water, so no one could get any for over a week. I had some neighbors who knew I had jars full begging me for my water. I had shared this wisdom nugget and been ridiculed for it. I see posts in other groups and videos saying to stock up on bottled water. I’m doing what my grandmother said. I’ll keep my empty jars full of water
