Prong collars arenât for EVERY dog, but they certainly work wonders at creating clarity during training for many others. For example, Luke here is almost 100 pounds of pure excitement. When he sees other dogs, his 60-year-old-female-owner weighing about the same as him was having a very hard time keeping him under control EVEN THOUGH Luke knew a solid heel and âleave itâ command. Sometimes when dogs knows they can get away with things, theyâll do them even when being asked not to. Go figure.
Adding in a prong collar to training allows for Lukeâs mama to give a solid correction when needed, keep Luke from dragging her down when he sees another dog, and is effectively teaching Luke that he actually CANT pull his mom around, despite what he thought he knew before.
Positive reinforcement will always be offered for making good choices, and if done properly, can even ensure Luke wonât need the prong collar for much longer đ€

Control is so so important for EVERY dog owner to have, but if your dog is at all reactive, practicing something like a down on recall is imperative for a trusting relationship! This can be the difference between your dog running after another dog and potentially biting, or asking them to drop down once they engage with that dog and instead, successfully responding to what youâve asked of them đ

In order to create a âplaceâ so solid your dog will stay there around ALLL the distractions, you have to practice having your dog stay there while you implement tons of crazy distractions around them, and then reward them for staying! Makes sense, right? No distraction is too big. The better your dog can ignore stimulus and exhibit impulse control instead, the more they get to do fun things with you out in the real world because youâll actually be able to trust their stay capabilities. Practice practice practice!

I wanted to share some of Peppers progress with you all regarding her Ecollar training! After lots and lots of practice teaching her HOW to respond to the collar, we tested it in a real life scenario. Peppers favorite thing to do in the backyard is incessantly eat grass and bark chips, and of course with bark we run the risk of choking hazards and splinters and potential intestinal issues when swallowed. Her owners had to keep a leash on her at all times in the yard just to keep her away from their planters. Rather than completely redo our yard, or obsessively taking things out of Peppers mouth, or try to correct her every time she grabs something, we went the route of Ecollar training.
With an Ecollar, we can teach her to come to us and trade for something else whenever she starts going for bark chips. This is SO much better than using a leash because we can click her collar from anywhere in the house. We donât have to hover over her anymore. Sheâll learn to be mindful of the bark chips even when she canât see us, even when sheâs off leash. Sheâll also break the habit of wanting bark chips all the time if she never actually has a chance to chew on them. This is also creating an opportunity for a training session and engagement with mom and dad way more often, which will not only teach Pepper better manners but will improve her relationship with her pawrents, and promote lots of mental stimulationđ„° Watch the video and see if you can tell how beautifully sheâs responding and trading.

Look at how far a little love and patience can go in dog training. Although I am a balanced trainer meaning I use corrective equipment as well as rewards, I firmly believe that dog training is more about how you train than the equipment you use. The equipment creates clarity for the dog only after our relationship is established, but they can feel our energy from the start above anything else.
When working with dogs with social anxiety like Jade, itâs important to focus on relationship and trust before adding in anything corrective. Forcing her to do things sheâs clearly telling me she doesnât want to do will only create more division between us. Showing her that itâs okay to take her time, to weigh her options, and to decide to trust me are all wonderful things. It only took one session and Jade already gained a bit of confidence she didnât have last week đ€ Amazing. So happy to see itđ„č

Does your dog struggle with fear based anxiety in new environments? One of the worst things we can do is try and force them into hanging out with us in public when they very obviously donât want to be. I hate hearing things like âwell if I just take them out enough with me theyâll eventually get over it.â Thatâs like throwing a child with a fear of public speaking up on stage with absolutely zero prep for a presentation. And then making them do that again and again. Youâll only make that kid hate public speaking more, and now he probably hates you toođ€·đ»ââïž
There are certain scenarios where forcing a dog through it can absolutely have benefits, but this isnât one of those scenarios.
Jade thinks whatever is on the other side of my car is really scary. She doesnât feel safe to exit, and really didnât even feel safe to leave her home with me. If I force her to hang out with me and if I force her to get out of my car by pulling her, the next time I come pick her up sheâs going to remember how mean I am and say hell no. Whereas if I instead try to give her the time to decide itâs really not that scary, and wait for her to put trust in me, the next time we encounter this situation sheâll remember how safe she was, and how ultimately everything was fine. She needs practice doing this so it becomes normal. Jades mama works from home and got Jade as a puppy, so sheâs just gotten a little too comfortable staying inside and needs a little extra push to realize it can all actually be fun for her. Once we conquer Jades initial anxiety and raise her confidence levels up, we can start training in these scary places to make her feel even more confident about what sheâs doing. Stay tuned for that training session!
