Costco is recalling Irish Rover Advent Calendars that contain dog treats. The editor of Dog Food Advisor notes,

Editor's Note: Although the defective treats were sold only in Canada, they appear to have remained on the market for over 2 months.

Which means that by the time of this recall, some of the product may have found its way into both Canadian and U.S. homes.

Dental health should be a daily ritual for pet owners all year long. Not brushing routinely or having a dental done by your veterinarian can result in pain and dental extractions later. My Button is having a dental next week and one tooth extracted. Trust me this is costly so it's best to take preventative care. Providing a forever home for a senior pet can be even more rewarding than adopting a puppy or youngster. I have adopted senior dogs and have always enjoyed their maturity and love. Yes, there can be vet bills but the satisfaction of helping an animal that may have otherwise been euthanized is greatly satisfying. Please consider adopting an older dog from a local shelter or rescue group. The Grey Muzzle Organization offers tips and locator map for shelters with adoptable senior dogs, visit, https://www.greymuzzle.org/grey-matters/adopting-senior-dog-rescue-senior-dog-adoption/adopting-senior-dog-how-find-your-new

You may not have trick-or-treaters this year but if you do here are some great pet safety tips from the American Veterinary Medical Association.
7 things you can do to make Halloween safer for your pet
1. Don't feed your pets Halloween candy, especially if it contains chocolate or xylitol (a common sugar substitute found in sugar-free candies and gum)
2. Make sure your pet is properly identified (microchip, collar and ID tag) in case s/he escapes through the open door while you're distracted with trick-or-treaters
3. Keep lit candles and jack-o-lanterns out of reach of pets
4. If you plan to put a costume on your pet, make sure it fits properly and is comfortable, doesn't have any pieces that can easily be chewed off, and doesn't interfere with your pet's sight, hearing, breathing, opening its mouth, or moving. Take time to get your pet accustomed to the costume before Halloween, and never leave your pet unsupervised while he/she is wearing a costume
5. Keep glow sticks and glow jewelry away from your pets. Although the liquid in these products isn't likely toxic, it tastes really bad and makes pets salivate excessively and act strangely
6. If your pet is wary of strangers or has a tendency to bite, put him/her in another room during trick-or-treating hours or provide him/her with a safe hiding place
7. Keep your pet inside.

So many dogs are in animal shelters across the county and Leon County is no exception. To help create awareness and more adoptions October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month.

Here's how you can help.
** Spread the Word
Post about the benefits of adopting and share posts about dogs waiting to be adopted.
** Volunteer at Your Local Shelter
You might be needed at an adoption event, walk dogs at the shelter or even offer to foster in your home.
** Donate
Cash is always appreciated and needed. Ask the shelter or rescue group if they need supplies like food, beds, blankets, leads or toys .
**Educate
Let friends and family know about the benefits of helping a shelter or rescue dog. So many need forever homes.

Now is the time to be more prepared to care for your pet(s) in the event of an emergency or illness.

Disasters and emergencies happen so here are some tips to be aware and prepared.

Be proactive. Keep all animals up to date on immunizations.
Pet-proof your home and property. Remove or secure choking hazards, toxic plants and toxic chemicals.
Identify your animals. Place tags securely on collars and even label collars with your contact information. If you have more uncommon pets, take pictures in the event they get loose.
In a disaster, have a plan. Who will be responsible for locating each animal in the house? How will you transport them? If traveling be sure your pet sitter knows your emergency plan.
Place decals on windows and doors with the number and each kind and of pet inside the home. This is very important for first firefighters and paramedics.
Learn basic first aid. Caring for your animal at home will prevent a minor injury from becoming severe.
Know your animal. watch for behavior changes or signs of illness. Contact your veterinarian before giving human over the counter medications.
Use &ProtectionMonth to post on social media.
