Meet Owen! This big boy (nearly 100 lbs) recently joined the team. His owner has worked with multiple trainers to address his dog reactivity since she rescued him a year ago. Unfortunately, her and Owen are still struggling to go on walks outside with dogs near. Canine Coach is here to change all that.

Meet Hailey, a 2 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The breed that inspired the modern day King Charles Spaniel (named after King Charles II of England) was formally recognized by the British Kennel Club in 1945. Redesigned, and more than a half-century later, the newer breed, no longer connected, was welcomed into the AKC, becoming its 140th recognized breed in 1996.

This adorable girl must believe that she’s descended from royalty cause she’s been giving her family a hard time at home. 😅 After working with a few local training companies that helped create a few changes, it still just wasn’t enough to bring about long-term change in their princess. So they reached out to Coach Ariel at Canine Coach to learn more. This family is beginning to understand Hailey, and what they need to do to bring out the best in her.

Out looking for trouble with Jasper 😏
SEEKING DOG TRAINING VOLUNTEERS

When I work with dogs who have reactivity, we often train out in the real world. I used decoys in my training back when I was learning. This involved a quiet, controlled environment and some of the decoys were fake dogs! Becoming a handler of reactive dogs isn’t an easy skill but this helped massively when I was learning many years ago.

Although I prefer to work and teach in natural environments now, it is helpful when you are working around owners and dogs you can trust or even have a basic understanding of what we are working on. For this reason, I often ask others for help. Recently, I’ve begun establishing a team of volunteers who are interested in showing up with their dog to help with training. Knowing the handlers will stay at a safe distance, that their dogs have a reliable recall off leash or even just someone who can walk by us a few times at the park are a helpful component to training and rehabilitation dogs.

If you are interested in being a Canine Coach Dog Training Volunteer, email me through the “email” link in my bio. There is a simple volunteer form to fill out before I add you to a volunteer list. I will reach out to volunteer prior to training days to see who is available to help. 🫶🏼

OBEDIENCE VS BEHAVIORAL TRAINING 📚

Obedience training focuses on teaching your dog to respond to commands. Good obedience training is represented by your dogs ability to reliably and predictably respond to commands that you ask for. It also involves teaching dog where boundaries are set, in the home and in other environments. Some examples of obedience include skills like sit, down, stay, wait, walking nicely on a leash, recall, eye contact, tricks, and more. Beginning training as young as puppyhood is highly recommended but dog can do obedience training at any age.

Behavioral training focuses on rehabilitation or the rewiring of a dog’s responses to certain conditions or stimuli. This involves identifying a dogs trigger and training them to respond differently to it. A common goal of effective behavioral training is to help a dog to perform a different learned response to triggers or stimulus even without commands or rewards. Behavioral training can take a great deal of time, commitment, and may have limitations.

Dogs who begin behavioral training early, or with behavioral that are less intense sometimes make it easier to address, but that’s not always the case. Owner education before problems arise can help teach owners how to avoid them developing at all. Although many behavioral issues often begin with something that could have been prevented, there are also genetic, and environmental factors involved that are out of our control. Behavioral issues can arise in any dog, at any age, regardless of breed.

Welcome Jasper! This 15 month old Miniature Australian Shepherd arrived today for a 12-day Board & Train Program. He’s spunky, intelligent, and has a high desire for play, and purpose. He’s worked with 3 trainers already, starting when he was just 9 weeks old and his owners have done a fantastic job with his obedience education! Because of this, he arrived READY TO GO for something a bit deeper, and more complicated than your average obedience program.
🧐

Jasper has been accepted to our Behavioral Focused Board & Train Program for dog reactivity - an issue far too many owners and dogs are struggling with. Tune into his Training Journey here in our daily stories to learn more about this common, but complicated behavioral issue.

Topic: Running errands with your dog 🚘 🏦

Car rides to run errands can be a breeze with many dogs, but when we’re in the heat or the Summer it’s unsafe to leave them in your car even to run into the bank or go grab a coffee ☕️ Dogs overheat much quicker than humans since they have completely different thermoregulation systems. Heat exposure can have serious consequences for dogs. 🥵 The good news is, many places in San Diego County are happy to welcome well-behaved dogs. But for many dog owners, bringing their dogs along to get a few things done just isn’t worth the hassle. 🙄

If you feel like it’s just easier to leave your dog at home, get yourself a personal coach. We can teach your dog skills that will impress even your bank teller! 😯👏😌

HOW LONG SHOULD MY DOG BOARD & TRAIN?

The length of the program we recommend for each dog and the skills covered varies from dog to dog. For instance, Spumoni (right) did 2 full weeks when she was younger and her sisters program will be less than a week. But how long YOUR dog needs to be here is dependent on a handful of factors:

1) The owners training goals
2) An owners willingness and ability to utilize and continue the work once their dog learns the skills.
3) The dogs breed, age, temperament, & personality
4) The dogs drives (Food, toy, play, prey, etc.)
5) The dogs current behaviors and
6) The dogs emotional state before and during the program.

Want to know why Nessie is able to do a shorter program and get so much out of it? A few reasons!
LETS INVESTIGATE 💁‍♀️

Spumoni’s owners have already been through the program with her and learned what they need to to keep her moving in the right direction. THEY are trained and therefore Nessie has already been raised with some obedience, structure, boundaries and other healthy expectations. And they did a wonderful job! 👏 Although they are the same exact breed, these two girls have a very different temperament and personalities! Spumoni has a strong mindset! She is intelligent, and slightly rebellious in nature. She also has a lower food drive which can make positive training a bit more of a challenge. Nessie is highly eager to please, more so than her sister, more food motivated and less rebellious in nature. She has a very happy go lucky attitude that is rare in many dogs. She has some fears but it hasn’t escalated to fear reactivity. Because of her early start with obedience at home, a lack of behavioral issues, and her own individual nature, she can advance in a shorter program. Nessie is still quite competitive and athletic though, so don’t underestimate this sweet girl. 😉 Watch her training journey this week!

Parker is currently doing our 7 Day “Jump Start” Program. Before each dog’s Board & Train Program begins, Coach Ariel works with each family to create a personalized “Training Plan”. This serves as our game plan 📋 once their program begins. Adjustments are made during the program dependent on the dogs learning abilities and overall emotional state. We want them to succeed and have a good time here without adding unnecessary stress. Hard to believe but we often do MORE in the program than planned! The length of the program recommended for each dog and the skills covered are dependent on a handful of factors:

1) The owners training goals
2) An owners willingness and ability to utilize and continue the work once their dog learns the skills.
3) The dogs breed, age, and temperament
4) The dogs current behaviors and
5) The dogs emotional state before and during the program.

Did you notice many of these factors are dependent on the owners? That’s right, cause YOU ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. Every program includes 3 hours of OWNER EDUCATION! 🙌

Parker’s plan includes manners and the basics in these 7 days. Watch our stories this Summer as we feature 3 adorable dogs!

WHEN ARE LEASHES REQUIRED IN CALIFORNIA?
DID YOU KNOW❓

“California does not have a universal leash law. No state law imposes a blanket requirement on all dog owners to use leashes or restrain their pets in public. Instead, the state gives cities and counties jurisdiction over leash laws in their municipalities. Therefore, whether or not a pet owner needs to use a leash depends on local laws. Almost every city in California has leash laws that prohibit dogs from running at large, require leashes and ask owners to stay in control of their dogs at all times.

For example, Sacramento County Code 9.36.061 requires owners to keep their dogs safely leashed and under control 24/7. Breaking the county’s leash law can lead to a citation in Sacramento. The City of Sacramento also has its own law banning dogs from running at large. This law requires pets to be restrained by leashes, tethers or enclosures at all times. Like most municipalities, Sacramento’s leash law has exceptions in designated fenced areas, such as off-leash dog parks. Owners must still keep their pets safely in control using voice commands in these areas.”

In San Diego County, we are serious about our restraint and leash laws. For example, an owner was charged as much as $300 for a violation at a Clairemont park. San Diego County Code section 62.669; California Penal Code Section 597) states that the restraint of dogs are required.

“At home dog owners must control their dogs by voice, an electronic containment system, or keep them restrained by leash, fence or other enclosure.
Away from home dog owners must restrain their dog using a hand-held leash no longer than six feet. The person holding the leash must be *capable of controlling the dog*.

In a motor vehicle you must safely protect your animal with a harness or other device that will prevent it from falling, being thrown or jumping from the vehicle.”

Why are leash laws in cities important?

📶 The human population is higher and therefore the pet population is higher. Proper restraint of dogs will prevent dogs from harming other animals, people or property, and from straying and getting lost or injured.

Teddie’s results are in! 🧬 Thanks to those of you who took a guess! Did you know that knowing your dogs genetic can help you to understand them better?

Genetic differences between breeds primarily affect genes that control physical traits, such as size, shape, coat characteristics, and ear floppiness but it can also determine behaviors! I’m especially interested to learn about your dogs genetic makeup because it gives me additional information that helps with training success 🤓

A dog breed is represented by a sufficient number of individuals to stably transfer its specific characteristics over generations. Dogs of same breed have similar characteristics of appearance and behavior, primarily because they come from a select set of ancestors who had the same characteristics.

Personality and behavior can vary widely among dogs since nature and nurture both play a role! Nurture - that’s where you fit in! But also the dog breeder, shelter or rescue that they came from, social interactions and environmental interactions. I’ll stop there but canine biology is incredibly complex and interesting!

Do you know your dogs genetic makeup? Share it with us!

They scheduled their evaluation with outdoors and saw a change happen right in front of them! Now they’re beginning to learn how to improve their own handling skills and are scheduling the first Board & Train I have available. They won’t need to find a new trainer ever again.
