It’s rewarding to work with owners who are naturally motivated to give their dog the best life possible. Frankie’s owners are a perfect example of this. Last weekend, they drove all the way from Los Angeles County to San Diego County for a 2-hour session focused on Frankie’s developed behaviors. During the session, they learned more about the techniques used during her 10-day Board & Train Program. Her owners gained valuable insights into Frankie’s reluctance and learned effective strategies to help her overcome her challenges. The key takeaway was not just addressing her current struggles, but also equipping them with the tools to keep her progressing and ensure she doesn’t regress. It’s great to see such commitment. Her owners listened and watched closely, analyzed their current relationship with her, looking for areas to improve further and asked questions lots of questions. I look forward to our next training session and will forever be cheering them on as they help Frankie progress further.

It was both a windy and busy day at the Encinitas Community Park yesterday where Frankie and Hoppy had their first Co-Training session together. We worked on environmental exposure which involved skateboarders and kids playing soccer. The park also has a large, but rather busy dog park area. We made the best choice for them and avoided going inside, and instead worked nearby. Although it’s a large dog park, it can be too chaotic and unstable for dogs struggling with behavioral issues. Those environments are well-known for exacerbating behavioral issues with even the friendliest of dogs. Do you visit dog parks or prefer to stay away? Tell us below 👇

Improv coffee shop training date with Frankie and this sweet male Labrador mix in Encinitas yesterday. Would you say yes if Canine Coach walked up to you and asked to train with your dog? 😉

Thanks to his kind owner for allowing us the opportunity for learning together.

Frankie, our November Board & Train student, had her meals pre-packaged by 🤌🏻, which made it incredibly easy for both her owners and me to stay on the same page with her healthy eating routine while she’s completing her training program here.

With pre-portioned meals tailored to her specific dietary needs, we could focus on her progress and training, knowing that her nutrition was fully aligned with her overall well-being. In the morning, I top it off with probiotic to promote a thriving environment for healthy flora that helps with her gut health and digestive wellness. Healthy nutrition is a game-changer for keeping dogs on track and feeling great throughout their time here with us!

Dogs can be nervous, fearful or reluctant around children for a number of reasons, including:

Lack of socialization
Dogs who weren’t socialized correctly, or at all, to children as puppies may be afraid of them.

Unpleasant experiences
A negative association with children can develop if a dog has had a traumatic experience with them.
This includes experiences like being handled or picked up against their will, being dragged around on leash by kids, and even something as simple as being too overstimulated by children, as well as and many other unpleasant experiences.

Unpredictability
Children can be unpredictable in their movements, sounds, and actions, which can be scary for dogs.

Overstimulation in general
Children can be overstimulating for some dogs, who may not like the way they yell, run, play, approach them, or even hug.

Possession or Competition for Resources
Dogs value their things, just like we do, and they don’t often want to “share” things like humans are capable of. Any other animal (including children) can be a a threat to their favorite resources. This can show itself in the form of behavioral issues such as possession, resource guarding, and aggression. Resources” include ANYTHING your dog values, including food, toys, your attention and affection, and even something we take for granted, such as a comfortable place to sleep.

Is your dog nervous around kids? Tell me about it in the comments. 👇

Teach Them Young! A GUIDE 🗒️

The best way to teach kids about dogs is to first learn more about dogs yourself! 📚 Start by doing your own research on key topics, then work 1:1 with a canine behavior professional to gain a deeper understanding of how your dog thinks, behaves, and learns.

A GUIDE TO GET STARTED 🧠

📕 Learn the biology of dogs: Understand that dogs are not humans! Discover that dogs belong to the Canidae family and are a unique species, Canis familiaris. This is a great topic to start with!

📗 Study the science of dogs: Dive into the anatomy and physiology of dogs. Learn about their bodies and unique facts like how their eyes, ears, and noses work! Then explore the science behind proper canine nutrition.

📘 Learn about dog training: Begin by reading about Pavlovian conditioning and continue exploring the various dog training methods used by trainers today.

📙 Work with a professional: A canine behavior expert will help you apply training techniques to your own dog. Learn to read your dog’s body language, create balance through daily interactions, and implement training methods tailored to your dog’s specific needs.

Soon, you’ll be ready to share your newfound knowledge!

Frankie joined Coach Ariel and her nieces, Ayla (7), Nora (5), and Ellie (3) on a run/walk to the playground today 🛝 Frankie, like many dogs, doesn’t feel entirely comfortable around kids. We spent half the day working around them and learning. She did well! But so did they - an important part of helping dogs adjust! Thanks to my nieces for being good listeners and helping!

“She just arrived and we’re already taking selfies.” 📸 This 3 year old mini Bernedoodle is SO special to her owners they have a hard time being away from her. 🥹 Can you relate?

Although it’s hard for them to leave their favorite girl behind, it eases their mind when she’s here with Coach Ariel. They know Frankie will get the 1:1 attention and care she deserves EVERY SINGLE DAY. It’s worth it to them because of all the benefits! She gets exercise, visits new places, and grows massively in her training mindset! Watch us tackle some of her fears, and improve her obedience over the next 10 days here on our stories and posts then pass those skills along to her owners-in-training. 🙌

Feliz Día de los Mu***os ✨ Those who celebrate this traditional Mexican holiday, honor their deceased loved ones, including their pets. On this day, it is believed that the souls of the dead return to visit their living family members. Many people celebrate this day by visiting the graves of deceased loved ones and setting up altars with their favorite foods, drink, and photos.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful alter for our forever team dogs Bailey, Carly, and Santi ❤️🇲🇽🇺🇸😭
