Fezzik’s owners swing dance! Fun right?! So we’re adding some enrichment to Fezzik’s Board & Train Program with tricks for toy play. It’s a work in progress but he makes a great partner so far! 💃🏻 🕺🏻

Thrilled to announce Fezzik is back for a second Board & Train Program! After his program his owners were so pleased with all of the positive changes and growth, they began preparing for another. 🙌 We love when owners have big goals.
“He showed more confidence, independence, and was better equipped to meet the demands of his training. We are already in the process of getting him ready for part 2 to refresh and go even further.” - Augie
He begins this coming week. Looking forward to sharing another Canine Coach Training Journey with you.

After behavioral training with Jasper outdoors, we did some toy play in a busy area of the park. Before beginning behavioral training, keeping his attention wouldn’t have been so easy! There were children playing and laughing in the water fountain behind us, parents with babies in strollers, and dogs walking nearby.
There are MANY benefits to play with your toy motivated dog outdoors. And even more if they struggle with behavioral issues. Some toy motivated dogs aren’t as interested during play outdoors, even if they have no problem playing at home. Schedule an evaluation to learn how play can help you and your dog grow!

SIGNS YOUR DOG ISN’T READY ⤵️
We love going to large hardware stores to practice training skills but it’s not the best place to train with ALL dogs. It’s packed with people buying lumber, stocking shelves, pushing large carts and operating heavy machinery. Customers are lingering in aisles as they choose the best door knobs, turning aisles with carts full of paint cans, cleaning supplies, and tile flooring. In the garden center, plants are lined along the floor waiting for their forever homes. 🪴
If you and your dog in training are still learning to work together, I highly recommend training somewhere else for now. In fact, many puppies and adult dogs AREN’T ready for exposure to such a bustling, and often unpredictable place.
If you check any of these boxes below, skip training at HD for now unless you’re working with a professional.

Let me begin by saying that using food is still an important part of training! Food is a common motivator for dogs and many trainers and owners use it in their systems as a reward to encourage good behavior. This is often one of the best ways to train a dog and is common in positive reinforcement training.
But when a dog is extremely food motivated, it can act as a distraction, just like any other, taking away from their ability to really focus on the behaviors you are teaching. In this case, you need to learn how to use food with your dog purposefully, rather than just being a treat dispenser. 😬
So when is using treats a problem? Let me ask you: would you describe your dog as FOOD MOTIVATED or FOOD OBSESSED? If you chose the 2nd option, it’s possible that you will need to make some adjustments to your training routine in regards to food and rewards.
Where is this the biggest problem? Around external distractions. And who does it affect the most? Puppies, adult dogs that are under socialized, fearful dogs, nervous dogs, or dogs that become easily overexcited. Interested to learn more? Suggest a blog on this for the Canine Coach Dog Blog!
