"Researchers have found that horses using automatic box feeders and slow feeders consumed less and had slower weight gain than horses given free choice of hay in their diet."
I think many of us using slow feeders know this by experience but it's good to have it validated by scientific research. :)

Researchers looked at several feeding methods including free-choice feeding, a slow-feeder, and an automatic box feeder.

"Learn the most common feeding mistakes so you can tweak your routine to better protect your horses against colic, which remains the leading cause of premature equine death."

Steer clear of these preventable mistakes when feeding horses to help stave off colic and issues affected by nutrition and feeding habits.

It's easy to make a soft head rub - stuff a feed sack full of old foam or other soft things, then tie it to the post and cover it with an old horse rug.
There's the added benefit of covering up the metal post too. :)

Monitoring diet, turnout, and exercise is great when helping a horse lose weight. Decreasing diet or increasing exercise can both help a horse lose weight, but combining the two will yield the fastest results.

Here’s how to implement feed and exercise changes for horses that are overweight or obese.

Hay net hack - if you struggle to fill large full bale haynets with loose hay from a roundbale, here's a cheap solution.
I had an old clothes drying rack with a folding frame so took that part off and added roofing screws to hold the net in place, and twine to the legs to keep it from opening too far.
Voila - it's so easy to pile hay in, is light to carry and folds up to store.
Keep your eye out at tip shops for this type of clothes rack to repurpose. :)

Morning Mantra: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

You never really know the true impact you have on those around you.
You never really know how much someone needed that smile you gave them.
You never really know how much your kindness turned someone’s day around.
You never really know how much someone needed that long talk, or deep hug.
So don’t wait to be kind. Don’t wait for someone to be kind first.
Don’t wait for someone to be vulnerable.
Just go ahead and ...

"Can you value your horse's autonomy as much as your value your own?"

Make the most of this valuable offering by actually reading the article. :)

Imagine that each time you climbed on your horse, he began to move in a slow canter, so rhythmic and balanced that you can just close your eyes. Never a wrong step, never a moment of confusion. Your horse knows the routine so well, you don’t need to cue him. You let yourself be lulled, ... Read mo...

Morning Mantra: "People will love you. People will dislike you. And none of it will have anything to do with you."

People think, react, behave, and care from their level of consciousness. That's all they can do. Their personal story and experiences shape they way they do all of these.

They will judge others from this perspective. When they judge you it's not really about you. It's about their own insecurities, limitations and needs, so changing yourself to please them won't change any of those.

Remember this and stay kind. Stay committed to love and free in your authenticity.

I've always wondered what the benefits are of training a horse to lie down - aside from being able to trim their hooves if they were laminitic and too sore to stand, or for a partly disabled person to get on, why would you do this?
And if you do need to do it - this is the kinder way to train for it in my humble opinion.

I’ve always wanted to teach my horses to lie down on cue, but I’ve also had reservations about it, too – so many horses are forced or contorted into the lie down, which is horrible to do and, for me, entirely ruins the magic of your horse lying down with you. So, I decided to … How to Train ...

He was a bright young gelding. Alert, athletic, and so willing. One day he would become the kind of breathtaking dressage horse that his sire was, I hoped. Morning Mantra: “Start over my darling.”

Sit with the pain until it passes. Be patient and tough, and someday the pain will be useful to you.

The strength you discover will allow you to be brave enough to find the life you want, and courageous enough to chase it.

And then start over and love yourself the way you were always meant to.

An Australian club leading the way by allowing bitless dressage :)

Australian Riding Club offers Bitless Dressage Riders an opportunity to participate!

Galston Equestrian Club prides itself on inclusiveness and acceptance. We recognise that some members of our equestrian community choose to ride their horses bitless and in some rare cases even bridleless. Recently we offered a ’No Rules’ Dressage Day at the Club, this catered for those wanting to ride bitless, bridleless, with bits or in other discipline attire (such as western, stock or military). All riders rode their test(s) of choice and were marked by an accredited judge. This is something that GEC will continue to offer on its annual program.

Our Show Jumping and Working Equitation clinics and competitions welcome bitless riders plus a number of our dressage trainers are more than happy to teach riders who choose to ride bitless.

GEC’s President Pam Pike said ‘we are a Club that does recognise and celebrate diversity and we try to offer something in our annual program for the majority of our equestrian community’.

The Galston Equestrian Club is an adult riding club which meets every second Sunday at the beautiful Rural Sports Facility in Galston, in north-western Sydney Australia.

We would love to hear from other clubs around the world that offer bridle diversity classes!

Keeping horses without using them might seem wasteful or pointless to some, but there are many ways and reasons to have horses in our lives without there being a saddle in sight.
