In two separate articles recently published in Zookeys and Asian Myrmecology, Dr. Benoit Guénard from the School of Biological Sciences of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and his team has expanded the knowledge on Hong Kong ants by adding 13 species to the 174 species officially recorded.

Like butterflies, the egg to ant process is a metamorphosis. They go from egg to larvae and then to pupae. The larvae have the ability to spin silk threads.

"The Fastest Bite Slinger in the West!!"🤠🔫💥💥
Commonly known as 'Trap-Jaw' ants, species in Odontomachus these Formicidae have a pair of large, straight mandibles capable of opening 180 degrees. These jaws are locked in place by an internal mechanism, and can snap shut on prey or objects when sensory hairs on the inside of the mandibles are touched. The trap jaw ant actually holds the distinction of having the fastest bite in the whole animal kingdom😲. These ants are truly amazing, colonies can be as small as 18 or as large as 1000 workers.
I find these to be a remarkable species of ant to keep, they are very active and are often on the prowl like stealthy panthers o the jungle floor.🐜🐜🐜
Do you guys have any photos of your Trap Jaw colonies?

'Fact of the Day'
'Little Sun Specs' 🤓was the first thought i had in my mind when I saw these amazing species of Formicidae. Scientifically known as the 'Anoplolepis gracilipes' the Yellow Crazy Ant can be found speeding across the backyard of an Australian 🇦🇺 resident or even in a rainforest of a tropical pacific Island. With their lovely golden yellow color they look like little Sun Specs, in my opinion, and definitely full of energy.
Now, Yellow crazy ants lack infraspecific aggression between closely related colonies🤬🚫. Rather than establishing several competitive nests with individual queens, yellow crazy ants establish supercolonies—large interconnected nests containing multiple queens. Nests have been found containing hundreds of queens👑 and many magnitudes more of workers. By cooperating, yellow crazy ants can successfully outnumber and displace other species, thereby dominating food and nesting resources.
This ant species falls under the subfamily ‘Formicidae’ because they do not have a stinger. Instead of a stinger, yellow crazy ants have an acidopore as their defence and attack mechanism. These little guys are absolutely amazing and I think they would be enjoyable for any Ant Hobbyist.
Have a Wonderful Day guys!!! 😎👍🐜☀️❤️

Fact for today:

Was doing some research and came across these guys!! I guess it was the unsual look and shape of these ants but I found them delightfully interesting😊

These my friends are the infamous 'Turtle Ants' a species of Cephalotes.

Common in the New World tropics, Turtle ants have long attracted the attention of tropical biologists due to their unusual soldier caste with large armored heads that match the size and shape of their nest entrances. Nests occupy pre-existing arboreal cavities, and soldiers function as living doors to admit incoming foragers or exclude potential intruders.
Cephalotes (119 species) consume a mostly herbivorous diet supplemented by pollen, bird f***s and vertebrate urine!😲😲Now that is something!!

Facts For Today:
Honeypot Ant: "The Insect That Looks Like Walking Grapes"
Scientifically known as Myrmecocystus mexicanus, Honeypot ants carry their community’s emergency food supply on their backs. Worker ants feed honeypots nectar until their abdomens expand with golden, sugary liquid. When food is scarce, they will rely on their engorged neighbors’ regurgitated reserves.
The ants, whose bulbous backsides can swell to the size of a grape, are such an important resource that other colonies will attack to steal them. They’re not just a valuable food source for insects; indigenous Australians have also incorporated the honeypots into their diet as a source of sugar. The ants can also be found in desert and other arid environments around the world, including Mexico and the United States’ Southwest.
Do you guys find these ants as amazing as I do?😎👍
