Let's talk about dog sports. I am going to try to talk about different dogs sports each week.

This week will be scentwork...
Scentwork is curre currently a very popular dog sport. It is a great form of enrichment for your dog. It uses your dogs best sense their sense of smell to find certain target odors.
There are multiple venues that offer scentwork. A few are AKC, CPE, NACSW,USCSS and a few others. Each venue has certainntarget odors.
We will be discussing AKC as it is available in our area.
In AKC scentwork there are four target odors, Birch,Anise,Clove and Cypress. The first scent you will train on will be Birch. Once the dog gets an understanding of Birch you will introduce the other scents.
In scentwork there are multiple levels that you compete at. These levels are Novice, Advanced, Excellent, and Master. There are also Elite and Detective titles for the serious competitors.
There are also different elements to scentwork being interior, exterior, containers and buried. These also varie for each level you compete at.
Even if you choose not to compete scentwork is still a great form of enrichment for your dog.
Scentwork is one of the few dog sports you have to trust your dog completely. You rely on their nose to locate and then the dog to indicate the find.
This is a really fun sport and a great introduction to dog sports. It is a nice sport if you have a dog reactive dog as you don't compete around other dogs. It is also a great sport to build confidence in a not so confident dog.
