Sweet 14-week-old Golden Retriever puppy Percy is on the road to recovery after spending some time in our ICU over the weekend! He was an excellent patient and feels better already thanks to some time in our state-of-the-art oxygen kennel. In this photo he had popped his little head out to say hello to our staff during one of his treatments, and we don’t think he could get any cuter!

How Percy ended up spending the weekend with us is an important story that his caring owners allowed us to share to help keep other pets safe. Percy and his big brother were rough-housing, when Percy’s collar got stuck on his brother’s mouth. Percy panicked when he was suddenly stuck, and while twisting around trying to escape he caused his collar to become even tighter around his neck! Thankfully their owner noticed quickly that something was wrong and freed Percy before he lost consciousness. When his owners rushed him to see our ER team, Percy was struggling to breathe, drooling profusely, and very distressed. Radiographs showed that Percy had fluid in his lungs (non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema) caused by the time he spent struggling to breathe. Pain medications and oxygen support quickly helped Percy breathe more comfortably as his body worked to heal from the experience.

The strangulation hazard of dogs playing while wearing collars is a hidden danger that many pet owners don’t know about, but a story we hear with some frequency in the ER. Thankfully Percy’s story has a happy ending, but if his owners hadn’t been there to intervene it could have been tragic. Please, get your pups microchipped so they have a permanent form of identification, and then take those collars off when they’re playing with or interacting with other dogs!

After more than a decade sharing your journey, yesterday was the day for you to join your swimming buddy Denali. There are really no words that can describe the emptiness you leave in my heart. From the dog beach to doing agility with , to bike riding , to impromptu trips to Home Depot or weekends at the forest preserve, there are so many memories engraved in my heart. You taught me so much about life, about friendship, about loyalty, about love. You were bound to make an impact in people’s lives and you sure did just that with anyone who really understood you. Even though you didn’t belong to us , my whole family embraced you and cared for you and loved you deeply. Yesterday’s news was devastating for all of us, including those who didn’t know you for that long, but we’re part of your circle such as Lindsay, you always looked so relaxed after therapy with her. we still wrapping our heads around the fact that you are no longer with us, but your legacy will continue, the pups will continue to enjoy your pool, a pool that from now on will be name Quito’s pool in your honor.

It was an honor and truly a blessing knowing you my friend! Run free and until we meet again ❤️🐾🐶

As many of you know we have a client, Quito , who has (DM) which is a neurodegenerative disease, so he is in a wheelchair. We teamed up with who came up with the amazing design for the limited edition t-shirts and tote bags. Part of the proceeds will be donated to ( we will eventually have a link to order them , but for now you can shoot us a dm)

A little over a month ago a friend of Planet Paws brought a dog he found roaming the streets in the Austin neighborhood. He was dehydrated, covered in dry urine and very thirsty and tired. After doing our due diligence and search for a potential owner. We discovered he had no microchip and sadly no one seemed to be looking for him. Today he enjoys the comfort of a new home and more importantly a family who showers him with love.
