Anyone else been in a funk lately? Or just me?
The past week or so I have been in such a funk. I've blamed it on everything from the Full Moon last week to not enough caffeine...to too much caffeine.
Talking to a friend I finally think I found out what it is. Change. That transition in the seasons that brings change from kids being done with school to calving + planting season wrapping up on the farm leading straight into hay season.
Puts me in a straight up funk.
So I'm trying to slow down. Simplify. And be present in the amazing moments of this life I get to live.

Grab yourself a cold lager, because this time around, our latest burger special takes its cues from the Reuben sandwich. One half of this double smash burger is an all beef Son of a Beech patty, and the second is a bratwurst-style pork patty. Topping the burger is a duck fat sauerkraut and Russian dressing, all happily living in an inside-out duckfat bun with melted Hook’s baby Swiss cheese on the inside and the grilled flat side pointing out, making this burger really satisfying to crunch into.

It has been about a year since L'Etoile started carrying our beef and seeing their posts showcasing the amazing dishes featuring the beef never, ever gets old.
I'll admit - and this may seem silly to some - reading this post almost brought tears to my eyes. I am still so unbelievably proud of Andy and all that he (and we) have accomplished.
We are so beyond grateful for the amazing people we have met and get to work with. And of course for the amazing customers who support us.
A day late but we had the best day yesterday at the first Saturday Dane County Market of the season! It was a beyond beautiful day and we are feeling extra grateful and blessed this morning. ☀️
Sometimes mama just needs a little help.
And no, I'm not talking about me. 😉
As a first time mother, it's not uncommon for a heifer to possibly need help getting her calf delivered. This heifer (lovingly named Boomerang by our son) was birthing on her own for quite some time when Andy made the call to intervene and help pull her calf.
Unfortunately this is not my best film work. 😆 The adrenaline rush was real and eventually I was told to put down the phone and get in there and help pull.
The calf came out and after Andy stimulated it and got its nose airway cleaned out, we got baby reunited with mom as quick as we could. And all ended well.
It was amazing.
The gift of life on the farm always is. 🤍

We've had to pull one calf from a heifer who needed a little help and have a little heifer calf who is starting to be bottle fed.
So far so good!! Now only like 60ish more to go. 🤪

I jumped on ol' IG today to LOTS of posts discussing purchasing beef from the store vs. directly from a farmer/rancher.
Now while there are so. many. things. that go into this discussion, the biggest thing being discussed is...
Labeling. Did you know... 🤔 cattle that is imported into the US and then processed can be labeled as US Beef? Not to discredit how other countries raise their animals, but consumers should have the right to know not only where it was processed, but where it was raised, how it was raised, and who raised it.
We never want to instill fear in consumers because at the end of the day, no matter where you get your beef, it's safe. It's nutritious. And a great staple to any diet. We just believe consumers should be educated on where their food comes from.
Moral of my rant? It's a complicated subject. But if you're concerned about the origin of your beef, find a local farmer/rancher who can provide beef directly from their farm to your table.... a-hem. We do that. 😉

So I tried something new... A couple of months ago I decided to try my hand at making my own Whipped Tallow Balm. And I LOVE it! Come deliver beef with me!! 👇 This past week I had a full morning of delivering to all of the restaurants that we are absolutely honored to work with. What does that involve? First stop was to Baumgartners Tavern + Cheese Store located in our hometown of Monroe. Next I headed to Darlington to pick up our order of fresh meat from Avon Locker. After that I travel to downtown Madison to deliver for Graze and L'Etoile. Then a delivery of ground beef for Settle Down Tavern. Two customer deliveries. Then back south to Monroe to finish up at Panchos and Lefty's Outlaw Grill. Whew!! So grateful for a busy morning. A year ago we were talking about the goal of possibly working with a restaurant. So many doors opened for our direct selling last year! Well.... If all goes as expected - cross the fingers, knock on the wood, all the things - Harvest 2023 on the Beach farm should be complete in the next few days. We've had decent weather and our fair share of repairs this year. When all said and done, 178 acres of soybeans and 206 acres of corn will have been harvested. 🌽 When we say we are a small family farm, we mean it. Andy and his dad Paul do all of the harvesting putting in long hours. Field lunches (pretty sure neither will want a ham sandwich for awhile) and rides are a daily thing for this farm wife. And lots of combine rides for the kids. Emmett loved hanging with dad for hours every afternoon hauling corn and beans to the bins. 🤍 I've seen other farmers say this and it is so accurate, farming isn't just a job... it's a lifestyle. Last week Andy & Paul dusted off the combine and ol' small square baler to harvest our rye. They did a combo of round and small square bales until the unfortunate happened which happens on a small family farm... the small square baler broke down so round bales it was!! EXCITING NEWS! Fergus is out of the barn! With the warmer weather coming (and going....and then coming again) we decided we needed to get our bottle fed Fergus outside. We were able to buy a calf hutch from one of our dairy friends and Fergus made the move from the home farm to where we live. I am loving not having to drive over to the farm to feed him! And the kids absolutely love seeing him everyday and keeping an eye on him out of the living room window. 😍 Oh! Earth Day is every day for farmers! 🌎 Yes I'm aware that Earth Day was yesterday but here it is. 😁 And in my book Earth Day should be everyday. 💚 A couple years ago (most likely 2020 a-hem Covid) the kids and I started a tradition on Earth Day of watching the Lorax, making Dirt Dessert, and walking near our home to pick up litter and sharing why it's important to take care of the Earth. Implementing sustainable farming practices into our everyday is a pillar of our farm. It's so important for us to take care of the land and water so that generations after us can enjoy it and live off the land. I'm always so proud to hear Andy talk about regenerative farming practices that he is learning and using on our family farm. A bottle that is.
My main man Fergus and I have been going on about a month and a half of our bottle feeding relationship.
Some mornings I am beyond tired of it. Our mornings tend to get hectic - completely my fault - I've never been a morning person and have a habit of always being late. Throw in getting a couple kids to school and the last thing I want to do is mix up a bottle and go feed a calf. But..
But... after the rush I get to the farm and say good morning to the calf and the quiet and stillness of being with an animal always grounds me. It's become somewhat of a happy place.
