Getting ready for summer! Get your dog boots! Don’t burn their paws.
Make boots a positive experience. If your dog is resistant, put on one boot and go for a walk. The next day put on two boots and go for a walk. Give high value treats when putting the boots on and then get your dog moving to avoid him/her trying to take the boots off.
If your dog hates having their paws touched start with a simple relaxed session of feeding treats while resting your hand on a paw. Keep it calm, simple, relaxed, and DON’T get in a battle. If you feel frustrated stop there and take your dog for a walk or play a quick game. End on a positive note and try again tomorrow.

14 weeks?!? you say. There is a common misguided belief that service dogs can’t start training until 6 months. This is not true. The first 6 months are most crucial to social development so as soon as a dog shows they have the aptitude to handle increased stimulus we use that to our advantage. Moxy was born with the right temperament to be a potential service dog so as soon as she had time to bond with her little girl & mom and was potty trained we began both public access and obedience training.

Tip 1: train for short durations more frequently. Your dog will learn skills much faster this way. You will be amazed how a dog makes the connection from one short session to another.
Tip 2: End the session with success. Even if your dog isn’t doing what you want exactly how you want it, reward them for getting the idea then stop for the day or take a break until the next session.

Understand what’s going on:
Kirin is still slightly confused here and reverts to his usual sign of confusion… being affectionate because great rewards come with being affectionate with your human. Training mishaps like these are important and necessary. It tells me where the dog is in his understanding. We simply back up to where he was successful and then retry the step we were on. In this particular case Kirin was used to working this skill with me. Once he was switched to his handler he stepped back slightly. This is normal. So we stepped back.
